Another celebrated mid-90s arcade classic celebrates its 30th anniversary, and this time it's run 'n gun fun with SNK's original Metal Slug (SUPER VEHICLE-001). Leon, Chris Worthington, Michiel and returning guest Ben 'One Credit Classics' Cartlidge go over the top with Nazca's sensational 3D sprite-work and - along with contributions from the community and listenership - dig into the usual minutiae, as well as explore the possibility of the fabled 1CC or even no-death clear.Music featured in this issue:1. Woohoo! Been looking forward to this one!

Cormoran Strike

Ben! Feel like we haven't heard from him in ages! (its possible I just haven't been paying attention though)

Alex79

Oh yeah, also, every main Metal Slug game is currently half price on the UK Switch eShop at the moment if anyone wants to grab them. Might be on sale in other countries and formats too, not sure, but the Arcade Archives Switch versions are great.

Danny Abbasi

Check out Ben’s & Michiel’s arcade history podcast Video Wizards. It’s well researched with a lot of knowledge being dropped, but also a ‘fun hang’. And if you think Cane & Rinse is long-winded - these two will literally talk for 6 hours straight 😆

Danny Abbasi

Was gonna point this out too man, good job. Metal Slug 2 was probably the worst place to start for me - nabbed that on sale before - cause apparently the slowdown is particularly bad in that one. Will give 1 a try.

Alex79

Yeah, 2 is the only one I've not bothered buying. I got X instead.

TracyWil1

Just started listening to this one, and please forgive my cultural ignorance, but Leon, what is a “chip shop”?

Danny Abbasi

Haha, love this. Chip shop = fish n' chips takeaway restaurant

TracyWil1

Thanks for the clarification. I was guessing that but the references made I kept thinking it was some kind of gaming or computer store. Like computer processor chip or something.

One Credit Classics

Thanks for the kind words. It's always nice to jump on with the good folks at Cane and Rinse. I streamed Metal Slug the other day and died on the level 5 boss on one credit. A 1CC is definitely possible. Thanks again people!

Danny Abbasi

OK, I got 3 and X. 2, we’ll pretend never happened 😆. Wasn’t supposed to be buying any more games this year 😅 But £6! Come on

For Leon, I think you might be referring to a shop off Carnaby St nearish Rathbone Pl. I think it was called ACE. I was too young to have money at the time, but remember some chipped PS1 era consoles there.

Cormoran Strike

The podcast and the chat with fellow listeners here inspired me to buy the first two metal slug games on switch. And I have to say I have no idea how any of you do this on one life, as it's so hard! I couldn't do it!
