It's been more than five years since we covered a Halo title, when we covered the series thus far in the run-up to the release of this game - Halo 5: Guardians. Leon, Darren, Karl and Tony squad up once again to discuss the achievements and shortcomings of 343's second pass at this storied fps franchise, with its megaton marketing, controversial campaign and admired multiplayer.Music featured in this issue:1. Despite having zero interest in Halo I found myself getting worked up along with Tony about how they seemingly mangled the story in Halo 5, a story which I have no previous experience of or investment in! Quite an achievement. Also this episode made me remember the 3 things I like about Tony: 1) His passion for games; 2) His often insightful commentary; 3) His sometimes unique use of the English language. Thanks as always for the excellent entertainment during my commute.

Great episode! Loved hearing how passionate Tony and Karl were about the game's mangled story. The creative director of the game, Tim Longo, co-hosts a podcast with his long-time friend and industry vet, Brett Douville, called Dev Game Club, and it's very good. Tim tends to avoid talking too much about his time with 343, but he did explain when they covered Republic Commando, which the pair both worked on, that the idea of squad-based combat was already in the works when he took up the reigns on Halo 5's development. His departure from 343 last year mid-development, as well rumors that the studio's had a ton of problems on the back end, have me rather concerned about Infinite, and I suspect that Halo 5's development was hindered in a lot more ways than we may ever know. Still a fun game, but a flawed one for all the reasons the panel discussed.

I like boss fights 😂 but I get what you guys are saying even if you’ve said it a million times 😘 keep up the amazing work.

I love Dev Game Club been listening since the start. Came here to shout them out but you beat me too it. I second the rec! Felt to me like the might not have given Tim much to work with and he fell back on the old squad design from Republic Commando as it feels exactly the same. I can’t say that it was a goos idea but I can’t say it was bad either. Personally Halo 5 didn’t work for me. 343i just haven’t nailed the Halo feel that kept me coming back to the Bungie games. Will that keep me away from Halo Infinite? Not a chance, but I have low expectations, even with affection for Tim Longo Jrs work.

Excellent, impassioned discussion guys! There are some great boss battles out there but I agree, so many of them feel like the designers are just box-ticking. Great example of a gaming convention that’s so ingrained into the medium that we don’t question it.
