In our second show on SEGA's multi-generational crime saga, we look back at the PS2 original, Yakuza, as well as its extreme remake. Leon, Charlotte, Leah, Michiel and our ever-reliable community contributors consider the pros and cons of the Kiwami incarnation compared to the sixth-gen source, as well as taking a good look at the characters, events and distractions of the first Ryu ga Gotoku game.Music featured in this issue:1. I picked up Yakuza Kiwami hot on the heels of finishing Yakuza 0. To be honest I really don’t remember much about the game. I do seem to remember it being more strait laced than 0 and I remember it not having enough Nishki. I do remember enjoying it but it didn’t reach the heights of 0 or Kiwami 2 in my humble opinion. I would recommend it to fans of the series, you can’t play them all if you skip the first but otherwise it’s pretty forgettable to me. I still enjoyed it and will eventually go back and play again but it’s not for everyone.

I've got more enjoyment out of this episode than playing this game! I love the idea of it, but bounced off the gameplay hard when i tried it two weeks ago. Seemed unresponsive and repetitive. It great though to listen to the other parts of the game the panel enjoyed

Listening to this and the Yakuza Zero podcast has really made me want to finish Zero, I'm probably 30 hours and near the end but I think I need to start from the beginning, it's just been too long to go back to it and pick up where I left off. Can't put my finger on why I stopped playing must have just been the lure of other games but this could be my Christmas 2020 game to dive back in to.

I almost bounced off the gameplay too, but I ended up bumping the difficulty down to easy and continuing on. The combat loses momentum every time you get hit and it really started to irritate me. So far I'm on Chapter 6 and I do hope to finish the story, but I'm gonna keep it on easy and only do whatever substories are necessary for the most part.

Great episode, as ever. I was interested in the comparison to the PS2 original as I did pick that one up back in the day due to its comparison to Shenmue. I can't remember much about that version, but when I played through Kiwami last year it felt dated and the later game stuff was really tedious. While the world building is great, I found the boss fights annoying and not fun, I felt like I had to cheese my way through them. I haven't played the other remakes, but my friend has worked through most of them and said they see a significant improvement from 2 onwards. I'm currently playing through Judgment, and the combat and gameplay mechanics, while not perfect, are more refined and fun. I hope this will get the Cane and Rinse treatment one day.

Leon’s description of the Yakuza series makes ne laugh every time.
