The very deserving recipient of an anniversary podcast, Sonic the Hedgehog turns 30 years old in 2021. Leon, Darren, Leah and guest John Linneman of Digital Foundry recall their formative experiences with the Blue Blur on both 16-bit and 8-bit systems, as well as the many, many conversions and emulations released since. We also hear from community correspondents with their positive and negative memories and feelings about the SEGA mascot's debut outing.Music featured in this issue:1. I love Sonic! It was the second game I ever saw on a Mega Drive (after Streets of Rage) and I couldn't believe how good it was. I recall my Uncle (who was probably younger than I am now) coming out of his house raving about it and he only had the Master System version. The classic level select cheat input is the only one I still know and well before I knew about the legendary Konami code

Really great show, and Cane and Rinse work their black magic again as I've just bought the Switch version of Sonic - a game I don't even particularly like. I don't know how you do it...! 😆

Loved this episode. Great to hear from John again.

Great show as always. Is there a reason you did not discuss sonic 2 on the master system? (I listened to this in 2 parts and may have missed it, so apologies is you did). Is this game perhaps a unofficial version? It always felt slightly off to me when I remember playing it. Lots of hang gliding and mine cart sections as I recall. I remember begging my mum to buy me a copy of sonic 2 from the local asda only to be bitterly disappointed by its quality.

The show was only about Sonic 1, MD and MS. Sonic 2 is on the list for a future podcast.

Makes sense, I look forward to hearing about the hang gliding soon!

Who's Sonic? Never heard of him
