Here's where you can contribute your thoughts and opinions for Yakuza 3 for potential inclusion in the forthcoming podcast.A friendly reminder that where the feedback for the podcast is concerned, we love it - but keeping it brief is appreciated. We do want to include a breadth of opinions where appropriate, but no-one wants a discussion podcast that’s mostly reading out essays. Better to save yourself time and cut to the chase if you can.

I started playing the Yakuza series when 0 came out, and I fell in love with the tongue in cheek violent melodrama. After Kiwami1&2, the HD remake of 3 was a big step backwards mechanically, but the new location was interesting enough to keep me happy. The one rule I kept by was not to play the mini games more than once; as all of them are them are in the sequels I just played the story and will play the mini games more when I’ve (eventually) caught up with the series!

After playing Judgement last January I decided that 2021 was going to be the year I got into Yakuza and played every game. After blazing through 0, Kiwami and Kiwami 2 you can image my shock when, the day after finishing 2, I started 3 and discovered that "remastered" did not mean the full Kiwami treatment. My beloved Kamurochu now looked like it was made of cardboard! After the initial graphical shock wore off I ended up becoming quite fond of Yakuza 3. The beach town setting of Okinawa was a refreshing change of pace and I found all of Kiryu's new beach Yakuza friends to be a fun addition to the cast. And while the plot was just as convoluted and nonsensical as always there was now a clear, understandable motivation: I need to save the orphanage! The one thing I think this game was really missing was a dramatic John Wick or God of War (2018) style scene where Kiryu has to go down into the basement to dig up his old Yakuza suit.

Given the somewhat lukewarm comments I'd heard about Yakuza 3, I was trepidatious to start the next entry in what has become one of my favorite series of all time. The constantly-blocking enemies and Kiryu's sluggishness while in combat and also when roaming out on the streets made me think that those comments were right on the money, but as the game progressed, so did my enjoyment of it. Yes, the approach to combat is very different than in previous installments, and the stiffness of being the series' first foray into the PS3 can still be felt in the HD Remasters, but at its heart this is still a worthy entry on the Yakuza series that expands on the legend of The Dragon of Dojima and brings a couple of interesting and memorable characters like Rikiya and Mine. While I do think Yakuza 3 os one of the weaker games in the series (at least from the ones I played), I'd encourage anyone to stick through it as it does gets better and it has some really stand-out moments. PS: this one was a nightmare to Platinum, but my determination to do that for the entire series pushed me through and the satisfaction of finally achieving it was all the more satisfying for it.
