Our Tony's pick for the year's podcasts is The Outer Worlds. Not to be confused with Outer Wilds (Issue 500). Leon, Karl, Leah, Tony and community contributors review their experiences with Obsidian's 2019 first -person action RPG, from the creators of the original Fallout CRPG and Fallout: New Vegas. As usual we get right into the minutiae of the story, writing and performances, the design, the art, the audio and music, the gameplay as well as the technical aspects of the game.Music featured in this issue:1. Elevator Hope by Justin E. Bell2. Terraforming, One Bullet at a Time by Justin E. BellEdited by Jay Taylor

Just listened to this show, having finished the game over the weekend. I thought what you said about the running around for Pavrati quest before her date was spot on. It was a boring fetch quest, completed only because your companion just felt so well written and real. I'm not sure if it's the same for everyone, but I didn't do this quest until right before the end, before the point of no return. I'd spent the last hour charging towards the end, having had enough of the game and wanting to see it through, but just as we were about to head to the prison, we ended up going on a detour around the galaxy for Pavrati. Because I am a monster, I saved the game and then shot Junlei in the head whilst she and Pavrati were on their date in the kitchen. Pavrati lost her shit, was really upset and stormed out, leaving the crew for good. That the game had accounted for my evilness really impressed me. Obviously I loaded straight after and let the date play out as it should. I'm not a *complete* monster...

One of my abiding memories of The Outer Worlds is a side-mission picked up in a settlement from Person A who was worried about what had happened to Person B after leaving the camp - they couldn’t find out for themselves as they couldn’t leave their post. Person B turned out to be a 10 second walk away over the nearest small hill - if Person A had stood on tippy-toes they would have been able to see them. I also had the same moment of ludonarrative dissonance (take a drink) as some of the panel when I initiated complete carnage in a room that my companion didn’t bat an eyelid at. These two examples informed the three word review that I submitted for the show, ‘not quite ready’. On reflection this is too harsh as there were plenty of great elements to this game, most notably one of the best NPCs I’ve ever encountered, in Parvati. What I meant by my comment was more that The Outer Worlds seems to have had a vision that reality didn’t quite live up to, probably as a result of budget and time. Had the Microsoft dollars arrived sooner then maybe my companion’s reaction to the bloodbath would have had a rippling effect through the rest of the story, and the aforementioned mission would have involved a visit to a distant planet rather than an amble around the corner. Nevertheless, It provides a solid base for the future and I will definitely be ready for take-off to The Outer Worlds 2.

What a great episode. Wish I had the time to go back and play the dlc.

I really loved this game. It had a cute charm that I wanted more of immediately. I can’t wait for the sequel.
