As this often maligned but sometimes beloved and definitely curious console has turned 10 years old, it's time we took a typically thorough Cane and Rinse look at the Nintendo Wii U. Leon, Michiel, Rich and Ryan pick apart the pros and cons of the marketing and performance of the machine, its notorious controller and crucially, a deep dive into its shallow library, find oysters and pearls easy enough to find... but how many of those gems are now on display on the mighty Switch?Edit by Jay Taylor

This was a really wonderful discussion on the WiiU. This was the first home console my younger brother owned (15 years my junior), having spent his early gaming life on the DS / 3DS. I remember he got it maybe a year after launch, as a Mario Maker special edition release of the platform - he loved that little machine. When I would go home to visit the family, I would play Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros U and any amount of levels he created in Mario Maker with him. My nostalgia for the device is evidently second-hand, as I associate it with bonding with my brother. I never owned one myself, but the spate of great first party Nintendo games (and Bayonetta 2) were part of the reason I finally went all in on the Switch. Great podcast, thanks to all involved.!

I worked as a seasonal employee for Nintendo in November and December 2012 mostly to demo the 3DS at different stores. The confusion about the Wii U was definitely real. A lot of people thought it was just a new controller for the Wii. NintendoLand is still a game I revisit with friends once or twice a year. Mario Chase is one of the ultimate party game experiences and is unmatched by anything else.

Same here. Never even played a Wii U, but really love these console specials.

Really enjoyed this episode!

Woohoo! 3 hours 11 minutes of discussion about Nintendo’s worst console! Seriously though, once they finally port the Zelda remasters there’ll be almost no point in ever owning a WiiU. Really interesting discussion as ever, love the console specials.

These console specials always feel like a massive treat. Great fun hearing you lot go through the quirks of the consoles, and the thrills and spills of their life cycles. I bought a Wii U several years after getting a Switch because I couldn't wait any longer for the HD Zelda ports. While playing on the Wii U, I was struck by the feeling that Nintendo threw the baby out with the bathwater when they designed the Switch. Compared to their previous effort, their current console feels so drab and bare-bones with its perfunctory UI design and total lack of virtual console.

Fully finished the episode and now looking for a Wii U on eBay. Even though there's only a really small handful of Wii U games I'd like to buy, I could ditch running my Wii through an upscaler and have the Wii U as a Wii+Gamecube console via HDMI. Sounds like 8/16bit emulation is pretty decent on the console too with custome firmware so seems like a no brainer!

Aaaaand I’ve bought one

Enjoyed this one despite never owning a Wii-U. In fact the only time I ever even got my hands on one was a display model in the local Toys R Us (RIP) back near release. I remember being impressed seeing Mario Kart in HD for the first time, but for whatever reason I never even considered picking up a Wii-U for myself.

I was one of those people who thought the Wii U was an add on peripheral to the Wii as I wasn’t following video games closely at the time. The name didn’t clearly indicate it was the next iteration with a number or even HD so I thought it was a game pad addition to the Wii. I’ve looked into getting one but I like my Wii set up on my CRT, my Switch covers nearly every exclusive I want to play, and I haven’t heard anybody enthuse that the Gamepad enhances the gameplay enough for that unique factor. Enjoyed listening, thanks for covering it.

Excellent chat on the Wii U, thanks! Weird console, but plenty of fun to be had. I prefer it over the Wii, but the Switch has definitely been my favorite Nintendo system since the N64.
