And we're back for another year!As always we sound off about stuff we've been watching and playing, along with your comments from the past couple of months and we might have something to say regarding a little known television series based on a videogame that some of us may have played ; )Enjoy!

I love listening to these patron episodes! Just a couple of guys catching up and shooting the shit - great stuff. Have you played any more Immortality Leon? Any thoughts?

Mark Hoogland

Is it no longer possible to download eps from Patreon? I used to 'save link' from this page and play the file in a separate podcast app.

The Last of Us has been great and pretty much a textbook example of how to do an adaptation of something that was already cinematic: by following the same basic plot line but adding or altering a few things so it plays better to a general audience. I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do with the other big moments and set pieces. The reaction to episode 3 by the far right was expected and the fact their immediate reaction was to review bomb a website that only they care about anyway shows how little relevance these people have. And all it does is bring more attention to the show, so they're losers again. Thank fuck they made this a show and not a film, as we probably would have ended up with someone like Timothee Chalamet as Joel. Not a bad actor, but massively miscast because he's big right now. Also, good shout on The Menu. Probably the best film I saw last year and it was way more fun than I expected it to be.

[Jay] Hey Mark, it seems that when Patreon redesigned their layout a while back they removed the obvious download option. However, if you can see the blue mps link under the title of the post, tap that and it should start a download of the mp3 (at least that's how it worked for me and assuming you're on your phone).

Just gotta chip in with something that's been bugging me about the last of us episode 3. I have no problems with the changes to Bill and Frank's story other than to me it came across as though Frank used Bill at the start just to stay alive. The events after this are soured for me with this knowledge. I know there are reports about how they have a longer cut which might have helped with their relationship at the start but as mentioned later in the podcast sometimes small details in a show/film bug you when you know they shouldn't. Tess not using a grenade in episode 2 instead of the lighter is another example of this for dramatic tension. Anyway as always enjoyed the chat. Cheers

Maybe it's just me but the blue mp3 links have disappeared now, including older posts. I'll do some more checks later to see if I can work out what happened

Cane and Rinse

On the app you need to click on the little cloud next to the post title.

I use the website. Didn't even know there was an app lol. I'll give it a try. Thanks!

Yeah, the blue links are gone, but I just noticed there's now a Download option under the '...' at the bottom of the post.

I think it's a little hard to say this is how all the adaptations should because there aren't a lot of other video games as ideally suited for a TV show as the Last of Us

Tolkientaters

It's interesting to hear Jay's thoughts about continuity, because I'm generally of the opposite opinion, I like sequel to sequel continuity, but as far as universe I really don't care, I think the focus on that can often constrain creativity. It's why my favorite runs of big characters comics tend to be non cannon, because I can just read those stories and not worry about 5 other supplemental comics to understand what's going in.

Tolkientaters

I think generally the reason one hero is facing the big threat is the same reason the eagles didn't fly the ring to Modor, it'd be less interesting. It's why there's such a large gap in Batman's abilities when he's in solo comics vs when he's in justice league and is somehow the most ridiculously overpowered character because he's the most popular.

Jay: "It's on Paramount Plus... I've got no idea where you can legitimately watch it..." Paramount Plus. 😆

Paul

Great chat as usual. Really enjoying The Last Of Us discussion. Are either of you listening to the official companion podcast? It comes out straight after each episode and is really interesting.

I'm not sure if it's just me but I am really finding myself struggling to maintain interest in the last of us. it's incredibly well made, totally competent etc etc but it's all the same stories we've seen time and time again. Last of Us is a game inspired by stories from other mediums made back into a tv show similar to many that inspired it... It just feels just so uninventive at this point. Tell me I'm wrong!

Cane and Rinse

You may have noticed that we don't do that (tell people that they're "wrong" for having their own tastes and experiences). Each individual only enjoys things as much as they enjoy them.

Cane and Rinse

I would say that The Last of Us *is* (and always has been) derivative. I honestly find that most fiction across all media is derivitave to a greater or lesser extent, What keeps me captivated to both the TLoU games and the TV show are the robust world-building, rich atmosphere, well-developed characters, sharp writing, sense of humanity and interesting/exciting scenarios (Leon).

Janelle

I probably won't play The Last of Us (makes me too anxious) though the season has been a joy to watch. I like seeing how one character doing the "right" decision can have unexpected consequences. Episode 5 is a gut punch. Great show and look forward to catching up on older game episodes.

I mean it as a sense of using the source material correctly and actually following the plot of the original, and only changing or adding things when they actually serve the plot. Or focusing on characters that people are familiar with. Why call something Resident Evil when it has none of the characters that people know and has connection to the original story?
