Here's where you can contribute your thoughts and opinions for Dragon's Crown / Pro for potential inclusion in the forthcoming podcast.A friendly reminder that where the feedback for the podcast is concerned, we love it - but keeping it brief is appreciated. We do want to include a breadth of opinions where appropriate, but no-one wants a discussion podcast that’s mostly reading out essays. Better to save yourself time and cut to the chase if you can.

The gameplay of this little gem of a game lends itself well to the idea of 'pick up and play'. Tired after a day of work and need something relatively simple yet eyecatching and fun? This game has you covered. I love how intimate the experience is with the narrator detailing your deeds and encounters. A fun little secret, you can actually change the narrator's voice to that of one of the adventurers you play as, each has a separate voice that can narrate your tale. I played Amazon so i tested out her voice for a good couple of quests but of course the original narrator's suave tone won me over. The best line of the game however comes from your pal, Rannie, who upon picking up loot always cries out "FILTHY LUCRE!!!" with glee. I love it.

Vanillaware often feels like a company that wasn’t founded so much as manifested by the answered kokoro wishes of a thousand virginal weeaboos. Everything they make is so niche that it’s often hard to reconcile with the game industry at large. I’d call their work uncompromising, but I don’t necessarily mean it as a complement – all their games have clearly been created with immense passion and love, while simultaneously all sorely lacked a voice in the room that knew when to cool it with the boobs. I get that much of the fun of this art style is centered on maximalist exaggerations of each character’s physique, but there’s a pretty comfortable margin between “sexy” and “an obscenity before god and man”. Half the cast are indistinguishable from a DeviantART page you’d need to turn safe-search off to find. The sorceress’ walk-cycle looks like the third act of a Cronenberg movie about lactation. I think it’s a shame that so much inspired visual design gets overshadowed by a few choices that feel leering, cheap, and beneath the level of talent on display. It’s not my intention to be a scold or shame anybody, but I think it’s irresponsible to put media out into the world that makes people think spines are capable of enduring the payload on display.

I remember seeing the early trailers for this game and becoming incredibly excited. Not for the gravity defying reasons many randy Gamers did, but because this was an era where we were starved of 2D beat 'em ups. I have the original on my Vita, and while I didn't finish it, I enjoyed the time I had. It's one I'll probably restart and complete soon, once I get my Vita up and running again. While it has been a few years since I played Dragon's Crown, it remember it feeling a lot more grindy and repetitive than I expected. Odin Sphere had the same problem of running ideas and enemies into the ground for the sake of padding out the running time. If Dragon's Crown was presented more like an arcade side scroller that allowed you to change up the level order or routes each time I would happily play it more. Instead, it feels like a slogging time sink in its current mission-based format, which is a shame as the combat is a lot of fun for the most part. Now to get to meat of the matter, as it were. The dipictions of all the characters, especially the female ones, is ridiculous and makes playing this game in front of other people embarrassing. I wish game designers and artists would knock this sort of thing on the head, but I understand why they carry on as the gaming community is easy to exploit with fan service and enough of them don't think twice about spending extortionate amounts of money on wipe-clean statues. I'm not a prude, but some of us like to play games with two hands at all times. In the game's favour, at least none of the bosomy characters are underage nor has the director made up some convoluted plot reason for why women have to walk around half naked all of the time; this exists purely for titillation. That aside, I like the look and presentation of the game. The animation is fluid and the painted aesthetic suits the world well. The story is a little lacking and clichéd fantasy fare, but who is playing this game for plot?
