(the intent is not to debunk the linked post, which agrees this is not a bug. It's just the post that inspired a rant lol)

Get leftovers picks food from inside the fridge testing for it to match your sims dietary preferences.

Thats it.

There is no magic extra step that makes the food higher calories. The food is entirely unaltered.

Source: it's been debunked several times, there's no proof it's a thing whatsoever, and I looked at the games tuning.

These are the get leftovers interactions. They are "Pickers". This means they "pick" something. In this case, it's automated.

This tuning says that the interaction fails if there are only foods that have no servings left or are spoiled.

This tuning says the food cannot be ice cream, prepped ingredients, or a cake with candles or a topper on it.

This tuning tests for vegetarianism, lactose intolerance, and child of the ocean food standards, which are apparently a thing- I assume it's checking for fish? Not sure.

This tuning says then it auto picks a random item. After that is a "continuation"- what happens next. It "continues" to picking up the food. Looks like it'll pick which one to do based on available food qualities, so it must prioritize them based on quality first. Sims do this follow-up interaction after all the decisions are made and tests are passed which happens in a fraction of a second.

The entire rest of the interaction tests for the sims age, the time of day, etc.

The follow-up food grab interactions simply pick the food out of the fridge. It is not at any point modified by the interactions.

Calorie gain is done by eating. There is no mechanic to facilitate making the calories on food higher based on the means of obtaining it. That information is stored in the food itself.

It's not real. It was never real. Stop taking game advice from random dumbass youtubers.

In fact, stop taking advice from random redditors, too!

Because there is Junk Food in the game. There's an entire Snowy Escape lifestyle about it. It may not dynamically alter food calorites, but there IS junk food, the game DOES know what counts as junk food, and it DOES treat eating it differnetly- just not in terms of weight gain(beyond the extra calories inherently programmed into these foods) , except for Junk Food Fiends who I believe do have a lowered weight gain from eating junk food since their bodies rely on it (not sure on that one! But the important part is I clarify I am not sure on it!)

Sims players are so rampant with misinformation, it drives me crazy!
