(This entire post is explained in the video if you'd rather watch than read!)

In The Sims 1 and 2, Sims had a little thing called "Comfort". When they spent too long on their feet or doing strenuous activity, they would eventually decide they have had enough and refuse to do productive tasks that required standing. This made it much harder to grind craftables, grind skills, grind money making, grind collecting...essentially, it forced your sims to take breaks.

Sims 4 decided not to have this, and I'm here to solve that with a FULLY FEATURED BRAND NEW MOTIVE!

The Comfort Motive is a mod weeks in the making. And it is thick. I tried really hard to make this a fully featured "real" motive. So let's get into the features:

All sims Teen and Up get the Comfort motive added.

...unless they are a ghost or a Servo. Inactive households do not get the Comfort motive. When Sims are first loaded, their motive is set to a random number within a small positive range. Pregnant sims experience discomfort faster.

Comfort features 4 special buffs in place of a bar on the motive panel.

"Comfy" affords sims faster decay of Uncomfortable, Stressed, Angry, Injury, and Mood Swing buffs while active, and is active while seated and for one hour after standing back up.

"Could Use A Sit" is a Fine moodlet and slows decay of the previously mentioned buff types a bit. Sims are more likely to do a few relaxing activities with this moodlet, and they will learn skills 5% slower.

"Sore Feet" gives +1 Uncomfortable, slows buffs a bit further, makes sims even more likely to try and relax, and slows skill gain by 15%.

"Can't Stand Standing" gives +2 uncomfortable, makes sims wave their arms around with a thought bubble to let you know they're desperate, makes sims walk with the teen mood swing walk style, gives them glowing red feet, slows those buffs WAY down, makes Energy and Fun motives decay faster, HALVES skill gains, and most importantly- COMPLETELY prevents sims from doing THOUSANDS of interactions across ALL packs!

When the motive fails, Sims will seek out a number of seating options nearby, including things like sitting by the pool. If no options are available you'll get a notification telling you your sim is trying to sit but can't find anywhere to do it.

When the motive is mostly full, it will decay sliiiightly slower. When the motive is almost depleted, it will decay  MUCH slower.

THOUSANDS OF INTERACTIONS ACROSS ALL PACKS

are disabled when your sim "Can't Stand Standing". You cannot craft. You cannot collect things. You cannot garden. You cannot cook. You cannot dance. You cannot do Yoga (except the corpse pose!). You cannot do extreme sports (except sledding!). And so on. This part of the mod alone took me days to put together and they may be missing options. If you see anything you think is missing, let me know and I'll look into it. I will also be adding compatibility for a few other mods that I like and use later.

When sims are sitting, relaxing, sleeping, or meditating, they will refill their comfort motive.

MOST BUT NOT ALL sitting interactions count for this. If you're in a chair or on a couch or on a barstool, you're good. On a piano, maybe not. I tried as hard as I could to cover my bases here. You won't be in a situation where you're not able to fill the motive, though. Some things are goofy here- ALL meditation interactions count towards comfort increasing, so that includes teleporting from high wellness skill. This is harmless and, honestly, makes sense. There are a lot of obscure ways to increase comfort, too. Riding in the Tunnel of Love will do it. So will meditating, and sunbathing.

There are two reward traits.

Comfy Insoles will slow your comfort decay by 50%! Do you want to eliminate Comfort altogether? Then get Memory Foam Injections in your feet, which will stop it from bothering your sims entirely- AND give you a permanent "Comfy" moodlet!

Compatibility With Other Mods

The tuning in this mod can be used by anyone to provide compatibility with their mods if they so please. At present the mod supports compatibility Healthcare Redux by Adeepindigo, and its pain medicine, which functions like how Coffee does for Energy. Take a pill and you'll get a boost to comfort and itll lower slower and raise faster for two hours. That doesn't mean other mods are totally left out, though- if interactions from other mods are made in certain ways, they will work out of the box with this mod.

This mod now also supports Happy Holidays.

Future Plans

For all new content going forward, this mod will get an update to add new interactions to the "can not do" list and the "raises comfort" list. This should be pretty quick and easy, and the mod will function without these updates, it just won't be as fully featured and might feel a bit off if your sim can be desperate to sit but still able to do something crazy or intensive.

I plan to add support for *positive* integration with pack features that aren't really there right now. Meditation increases the comfort motive and lots of sitting interactions across several packs do as well, but I would like to add the motive to the debug "make happy" cheat, make a reward potion (existing or new) increase it, add effects to the Celestial Crystal Crown or to the Tea Sea to increase it, etc..

REQUIREMENTS:
Lot51 Core Library
Parenthood Game Pack IS NOT REQUIRED, you just won't get the moody walk style.

THANK YOU:
Lot 51
Lumpinou
Everybody else on Creator Musings as always sorry I didn't name you all individually sorry

PATCH NOTES can be found on the download page.
Update 3/13- New Versions
Updated 3/16- Interaction Additions
Updated 4/16- Removed vestigial tuning
Updated 7/23- Tuning changes
Updated 8/10- Support for Mermaid sleep in water and Lovestruck rug/blanket
Updated 9/8-
Cuddling in bed, autonomous or otherwise, now counts as a comfort interaction. This will stop sims who cuddle in bed from freaking out. They wouldn't gain comfort, and if it hit 0, they'd fully just pop out of bed leaving the other Sim still cuddling the air!
Updated 1/10- High School Rabbit Hole now increases Comfort.
Updated 3/30- Added support for Marco's Small Business Overhaul to disallow restocking with hurt feet. Added Business and Hobbies support for Pottery and Candymaking, but not tattooing as I am unfamiliar with how it works and worried it might cause problems.
Updated 6/19- Added University Classes, lectures, skill classes, and tutoring!
Update 6/22- Improved Uncomfortable Buff penalty so that it doesn't...make the Comfort Motive's Uncomfortable Buffs oppressively difficult to get rid of.
Update 7/13- A bunch of fairy stuff! Enchanted by Nature update.

Update 7/15- Enchanted by Nature update 2- EA didn't tag a few things right, I think, so I added them manually. Sleeping on ground (high skill) and sleeping on pianos and dollhouses (fairy). Adjusted Fairy Comfort modifiers so they not only lose less comfort, but also get it back faster. This is an attempt to balance Fairies as "flying instead of on their feet" and let them stand around more. Only applies to fairies with flying enabled. Also adjusted the Desperate comfort state so that, while in it, comfort drops much slower, meaning Failure won't happen so soon after entering this state. This moodlet is now +5, though! So instead of the "forced to sit down" failure state, which was honestly more annoying than intended, your Sim will simply be visibly uncomfortable and want to figure that out ASAP.

Additionally, the max comfort motive (when you've sat until you've hit max) now lasts 90 minutes instead of 60 and will slow Comfort decay to 75% while active. This further rewards filling the motive up completely and has sims start the day off better when waking up.

Update 8/17: Balance system update. Sims now regain balance after the "Still Comfy" moodlet ends. They lose it at half speed if it lowers while doing any "Sitting"/comfort-raising activity, and if they have one of the reward traits, the speed is halved at all times (and multiplies with the halved speed from sitting).

Gemma Anderson

Hi! Thank you for creating this mod! I am looking forward to trying it out :) I think this mod would go very well with the Healthcare Redux mod by a.deep.indigo, like if they get their feet too sore, they have to take medication to ease the pain, or they can apply foot cream to stop the skin getting too dry or hard, or they have to go to the doctors because they twisted their ankle from walking too much etc...these are my suggestions anyway :)

waffle_mix_ins

That's a good idea and possibly very simple. I might be able to inject right into her medicine interaction to make it ease the comfort motive a bit. I might look into that.

Melissa Lungu

My sims can't do anything when their feet hurt: is this normal? They can't sit down cos their feet hurt. Can't lie down...literally everything is greyed out, so I have to delete the buff. This can't be correct, surely? Sims 2 is my fave iteration, so I loved this idea of this, thank you for all you do :0

waffle_mix_ins

You have the latest Lot51 Core Library, right? Is there a tooltip on the greyed out options? There's no issues whatsoever on my end and I've not gotten any other reports of this. Did you test with only this mod installed (and core library obviously)?

Childless Cat Lady (and proud of it!)

Wanted to chime in and report that I'm having this issue as well. I've got the latest Lot51 Core Library installed. My sims literally can't do anything when they get the "Can't Stand Standing" buff....not even debug options/teleporting work; I get a tooltip that says "(Sim Name) feet hurt too much to do this. Take a break!" If I may make a suggest to Waffle: I love the idea of this mod, but in future updates, maybe add an option for Sims to be able to sit on the ground for a little while (when they can't move due to super sore feet) and let their feet cool off enough for them to find a comfy object? Kind of like how passing out ever so slightly refills the energy bar enough for the Sims to make it to a bed or couch for a nap or sleep. Keep up the great mods! <3

waffle_mix_ins

I need both of you to try the mod with no other mods installed besides Core Library and then if it continues, share the lot51 Core log file generated in the same folder as core library. I'm using the same files you are and nothing about this issue makes any sense unless there's a core library issue injecting something somewhere, or another mod has drastically altered your game's files. Sometimes mods erroneously edit something called object_sim which can break 159871987489237495 interactions. I'm wondering if you have other mods that do that. And when I say test without mods I also mean CC. Just these two mods.

Melissa Lungu

the only packs I don't have are Paranormal and Spooky. I have a few kits, but not all...don't know if these count...they're a bit pants really aren't they?

waffle_mix_ins

We figured it out, it's a Core Library issue and there will be an update for it! Some of the interactions are blocked by Pie Menu Category, and Core Library was mistakenly not letting that happen if you were missing any content in any of the listed pie menu categories, effectively defaulting the disabled content to "Everything in the whole-ass game" lol It was a pretty quick diagnosis!

Melissa Lungu

Aye, I actually just made a new test sim, just joined him on a day as a detective to keep him on his feet as well! Then I saw your email to all Comfort Motive Users 😂thanks for sorting it. I did have Core Library, I have all Lot51s mods, aren't they awesome?! I totally think the For Rent pack robbed his Plumbbros mod, what do you think?!

Star Zoë

Insanely well thought out! When you showed us that all yoga didn't work expect the corpse pose my jaw fell open a lil. Awesome! <3

千月 狐

Thanks for your work, this mod is really great! There is a problem though that I don't know if it's a bug or not, when my sims's legs hurt and them needs to sit down but the situation need my sims leave the map, then their AI will stop working and will keep repeating itself over and over again between leaving and finding a seat.

千月 狐

And then if it's a long way home when I need my sims to get home but they need to sit down, they doesn't choose to go home and rest right away, but looks around for a chair to sit in. I think leaving the map to go home should be prioritized a bit more than looking for a chair. Just some personal opinions.

RobertAtNyte

😄😄😄😄😄 Yesss!!!

Marie King

Just wondering it doesnt seem to work with mermaids sleeping in the water? When my mermaid woke up she had glowy feet and was dragging around, seems water should be comfy for mermaids?

DAVID EVANS

Are fat sims likely to get sore feet sooner than fit ones, or is there no difference?

MyrandaMiller91

My only request: Please disable the motive for Servos? Or a variant that disables it for them. Makes no sense that a Robot would need to rest its feet. It's annoying to play with them. The actual sims, yes absolutely I love it. But Servos do not need to rest their feet. I always have a Servo nanny in the house of my legacy saves, genuinely useful.

waffle_mix_ins

It should already be disabled for Servos, but can you redownload the main file (not one of the soreness files) and see if it changes anything? I put another check in there.

MyrandaMiller91

I think I know how I fudged it. I had to remove the Servo trait to set my Servo's preferences (likes/dislikes, turn ons/offs) because you can't normally set those, then re-add it after. It's possible that the motive kicked in while that trait was removed. So yeah. Seems to have activated the motive for her.

waffle_mix_ins

Oh, yeah, once it's added, it's added. You can remove it with Lumpinou's Sim Info manager, select modify -> commodities -> and find Waffle_Comfort_Comodity or some such and remove it. They shouldn't get it back.

MyrandaMiller91

I shall look that up. Thank you! Would love to see a mod that enables editing preferences for Servos without cheats at some point but I'm sure there's something causing issues with that or it would have been done before.

omglaserspewpew

Great mod  ! I find it a little weird that my sims can wake up with sore feet, surely sleeping all night would have fixed that  ? I asked Turbodriver about supporting this in WW, and he's added support !

Miley

Awesome 😁

DaLeMoNHeaD

It looks like attending university classes doesn't increase the motive - one of my sims had three classes in a row and came out of them with glowing feet. Since the HS rabbit hole increases comfort, wouldn't it make sense for university classes to do the same?

yami kawaii

i love your mods! u are so talented and informational! i just want to take the time to say thank u 🩷 || is it possible to make this compatible with MercuryFoam’s Sit on Floor mod??

waffle_mix_ins

I have uploaded a new version that should do this, if I understand what I did correctly. I added the sit on ground crosslegged interaction, which it looks like that mod uses for all of its options. Test it and let me know!

AveryPing

I only noticed this mod today, and I really love it. I've always felt that The Sims 4 lacks challenge; Sims can easily live a good life, which feels unrealistic. This mod not only makes gameplay more realistic but also gives meaning to relaxation and health activities. Originally, these features in the game were almost like ordinary animations with little substance. Thank you for creating this mod.

JoJo

I love this mod, however I was wondering if we could get a version without the glowing feet and just the buff? :-)
