When directing Star Trek, J.J. Abrams desired to inject a little bit of the Star Wars vibe into it. RFR V.I.P. Matt Rashid discusses those films and whether or not J.J. was successful. Plus, we look forward to THE ACOLYTE (with apprehension), discuss Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny, RFR RPG, channel surfing in the 2020s, May The Fourth in Bristol and more!

Will definitely listen to this tomorrow. Thanks for all of the content.

Great free-ranging conversation this morning guys! Trek is my #2 sci-fi interest, and I was finding myself in agreement with everything that you were discussing about that. Looking forward to meeting and hanging out with everyone in Bristol.

Hollywood doesn't like new ideas for stories. They see a new movie or TV doesn't make the "big bucks ". They say it's a failure and shut it down or remove it from people to watch it.

Attention everyone, GM on the bridge! Great to hear you on the Q&A Matt and talki mg about Trek no less! If you were a captain, what would your ‘punch it’ phrase be? Great discussion as always! As for Acoloyte, I reckon it wasn’t a slip up in calling in ‘Icons Unleashed’ and Jmac had insider information. When they reveal the Sith in that show it will be Marsha Lucas! Loved the chat about Bad Batch and a second Clone War - I really hope this is how the season ends, with the clones fighting on Tantiss, then Vader showing up in his TIE, seeing Rex and giving him the choice: fight and die or surrender and live. That’s why they get decommissioned and why the fledgling rebellion doesn’t get off the ground for a lot longer into the Empires reign. Lastly, I watched the Dial of Destiny this past weekend with subtitles, and Jimmy, you’re in for an accidental Star Wars reference/treat in those subtitles in the first part of that film. No spoilers! Abbodanza!

Matt Rashid

Ha! Thanks for listening, Maddie! It’s great to just chat again. I’m not sure at which point the makers decided on catchphrase for the Captain. I do love how Lower Decks makes fun of it with “Warp me!” I’m partial to Jim Kirk’s “ahead warp factor one!” or whatever his final command would be- he knew his crew would execute it.

Awesome to hear the OG Matt back in the Q and A seat. We found Pluto TV a couple years ago and got hooked on the old Fantasy Island show. So much fun! I thought the new Star Trek movies were well cast and a ton of fun. Definitely different from the original TV show but the original movies were more action focused outside the first one. I also am sick of seeing the Enterprise getting destroyed and using going back in time as a plot point. Ughhhh Disappointed I didn’t get the Raiders reference and I don’t think I ever picked up they were saying a number. Can’t believe I never caught that. Can’t wait to meet you Matt at the Bash in Bristol. Peter B and Turtle Wars will be there too.

I also did a Sopranos rewatch during the pandemic. I've also been listening to Talking Sopranos and have like 3 episodes left to go. They did a great job with it. The interviews they do with the cast are very insightful and endearing. They all miss the show and Jim Gandolfini. Enjoyed this episode and liked the wide range of topics you guys got into.

Great conversation, full of warmth and fun insights. I listened to this chat when getting ready for work and doing my commute to the office and learning about Jimmy’s commute to his job. I liked Matt’s observation about the maximum speed of Star Trek action. Thanks guys for making the start of my day so pleasant.

Nice to hear you back on the Q&A, Matt. Love RPG, but it was nice to get your broad thoughts on the Wars again. You and JMAC have a great dynamic. See you in Bristol!

Dr Jz

Awesome show! Also, Billy Dee’s book is awesome. Made me cry a little. I highly recommend it

Devin Clancy

Isn't the Bristol NASCAR track in Bristol, Tennessee?

Matt Rashid

Thanks, Pete. That’s really kind of you. Looking forward to hooking up in Bristol!

Jeremy J. Lanning

Nice job!!! I thought Kirk was destined because of his father? His last name? He was raised by federation captains? He was born during a heroic moment?

Jeremy J. Lanning

I did love all 3 Treks but I’m a sucker for sci fi and I have a very looooooowww bar.

Sean W. from Warsaw

Alright! Rashid is back in the Q&A! Fellow "Rasheads" unite! Lol

Scott St. Louis

I loved this conversation about Trek. I don’t know if the younger generation understands, but Star Trek was a great place-holder after RotJ for at least a decade or more. Thanks for sharing the love!

Joe Dallas

I loved how you compared all the latest shows to “sides” and we need a main course! I also liked your strict pasta leftover guidelines! Can’t wait to meet you in Bristol!

Eric from Phoenix

Okay, if you have a low bar for sci-fi, have you seen Battle Beyond the Stars. One of my favorite cheesy sci-fi movies from 70’s/80’s. Right up there with Jason of Star Command and Buck Rogers.

Matt Rashid

THANK YOU, Joe! I’m party of one in my household when it comes to mixing of pastas. Heathens. Looking forward to seeing you in Bristol!

Matt Rashid

The idea of Kirk’s destiny didn’t really get introduced until the JJ films. It’s arguably more dramatic but not in keeping with Star Trek thematically (originally). In Wrath of Khan, Spock calls Kirk’s command of a ship his “best destiny” but I think he was speaking practically and not existentially.

Sean W. from Warsaw

Lol! Oh my! I just remember Jimmy Mac coming up, half-jokingly, with the term "Rasheads" (however you spell it) a long time ago for us fellow Rashid fans. I don't think it ever quite stuck, but I always liked it. Maybe it'll become a thing yet!

Sean W. from Warsaw

You know, I'm definitely not one of the younger folks on the spectrum, but I did not grow up with Trek and can see where you're coming from a bit. I have very limited knowledge of Trek at all. Having come to SW in the mid-90s when the originals were being re-released and the Special Editions were on the horizon, it was a great time. But limited. I guess I had the books, which I loved; but something in video as a placeholder....? Not sure. But I can see how Trek would be a good one. I've only ever seen the original film, Wrath of Khan; and then the first two JJ ones. Lol 😆 Terrible.... I'll see more of the originals one day! I keep hearing about the "space whales" of ST5 and am really curious....

Sean W. from Warsaw

Great episode, gents! Wish I could be at the event in Bristol.... Looking forward to the show that night, though!

Tanya S

Matt, I had the flu while listening to your Q&A and a fever dream led me to KBBQ with all the side dishes. Thanks for getting me through the last couple days! 🤒

Victor

Great episode! I second “For All Man Kind”. Fantastic show!
