The Jedi have been portrayed in many different ways over the years. From our first encounter with Ben Kenobi in the original film from '77, through THE PHANTOM MENACE, and now THE ACOLYTE, The essence of the Jedi Order has been expanded with many "certain points of view". RFR V.I.P Ben Stein returns to the Q&A to discuss the evolution of the Jedi Knights over time with references to films, novels like "The Living Force", and streaming series. Plus, we discuss prog rock and much more!

Tanya S

Ben Stein #1 !

Ben P. Stein

Thanks, Tanya! I am looking forward to your Q&A next week! We mention it at the end of the show!

Brian Robinson

Great conversation! House of the Dragon also has the creators/actors come on after the episode every week and explain certain scenes and the direction of the episodes. They also have a sanctioned podcast about the show. They don't overstep and make it personal. They also have source material they are interpreting.

Valentin

I'm not sure I agree with you Jimmy about the Force staying balanced if Luke had killed Ben. If he hadn't even considered killing him, maybe Ben wouldn't have been pushed to the dark side. Just as if Anakin hadn't turned Padme wouldn't be dead. But it makes me think that in both cases, the root of the problem is a vision of the Force, which makes me wonder what the F is the Force playing at !!!? 🤣

Yes in the round...1978..in the old and now replaced with office buildings St Louis Area..first concert...went with sister in law....Tormato Tour...I have seen Yes/forms of Yes many many times at differing venues...AWBH in Madison Square Garden...1991... Yes w Trevor Raben 1988 in Dallas...see them, or a form of them when in town...Just saw Jon Anderson Band Geeks ...unfortunately warm up for El Monstero ( Floyd cover band)

Scott Saunders

YES...all time favorite band...no peer..actually Steve Howe. Chris Squire...Alan White...Rick Wakeman...and Jon Anderson...first concert ....this was RELIGION!

Ben P. Stein

Glad to see another Yes fan! They are in my top 3 favorite bands along with Genesis and U.K.

Ben P. Stein

Thanks for sharing the info on your shows. I heard the Tormato tour was one of their best.

I’m sitting poolside at a resort in a saguaro studded canyon sipping a mango daiquiri in Tucson, AZ listening to this great Q&A discussion. I’m envious of your Japan travel stories Ben. I’ve been to Japan 12 or more times but have never left the airport. Okinawa is at the top of my next travel destinations. All that bootleg metal sounds good too. Starship Trooper has always been my favorite Yes tune.

Eric from Phoenix

I love that you’re taking advantage of your surroundings. Looking forward to having a couple fine Pilsners with you tomorrow night.

Rebel Force Radio

I don't think I'm saying Luke killing Ben would have brought balance to The Force, but it may have been something Luke believed because The Force was influencing him. As a result, Luke lost everything. Thus, Luke disconnected from The Force because, as you say, he was wondering what the F the Force was playing at.

Joe Dallas

Had a great time listening to your show as I drove around Las Vegas! Yes, Rush, Floyd , Zeppelin that’s where it’s at….

Ben P. Stein

Thanks so much for listening!!! I think you'd absolutely love Japan. Starship Trooper is one of my favorite Yes songs too. Love all three parts of it! The metal store in Osaka is called Rock Stakk Records and as I mentioned it had an amazing atmosphere. It is on the second floor of a building on a very sketchy block. It was very hard to find, and I almost stumbled into a super-sketchy adult establishment, and it looked like the kind of place from which I never would have escaped!

Peter Beisser

Ben, we gotta grab some beers sometime and gab! Always an enjoyable chat to listen to with you and Jimmy. Thanks for getting me through my commute yesterday with some awesome conversation.

Antonio from NJ

This is easily one of my favorite episodes. This was such an enjoyable conversation. And Jimmy thank you for not putting a time stamp on rfrs life.

Ben P. Stein

I would love that. Remind me where you are? I am in Columbia, Maryland and I think we may not be too far from each other!

Peter Beisser

I'm just outside Philly. Not too far. Family used to live in Ocean City, MD back in the day.

Ben P. Stein

I go to Pennsylvania every few months. I was in Lancaster to see Asia at the American Music Theater a couple of weekends ago. I'll let you know the next time I'm heading your way and we can get a beer while talking Star Wars.

Eric from Phoenix

Wow, what a great conversation!!! I gotta be honest, I haven’t thought that deeply about the force before this Q and A. I had to Duck Duck Go what Prog rock was. I’ve learned two great rock genres from listening to Q and As. Yacht Rock from Joe and Prog Rock from Ben. What kind of board games do you like to play? I like a bunch but can rarely get any of my family to play. My oldest and I were having fun with Axis and Allies Europe and just getting ready to play Axis and Allies pacific/ Europe but he had a date. Never played again. Good news is I did get a great daughter-in-law out of that date :) Star Wars Galaxies?? I loved that game. Played from Beta 3 until they shut it down. The whole change to Jedi kind of killed the game.

Dominique Garant

I think the Force showed Luke the imbalance. That there was darkness hidden in Kylo. The correct response for Luke would be to sit with Ben, work it out, use his greatest tool: compassion. That would’ve maybe led to finding Pàlpatine. Instead, Luke leaned into his old Skywalker genes, of emotional response, anger, (and killing children 😉) . Let’s call it a little Dark Side spike. He managed to stop, but too late. The manipulation of Sheev worked again. Even from the brink of death, he managed to destroy Luke’s academy amd family, with a simple dark side vision plant.

Valentin

Yeah but if Luke didn't do it when he was young and he thought his sister and all his friends were being killed I don't believe he would do it with many more years of experience and because of a simple Force vision. Jake Skywalker yes but not Luke.

Scott St. Louis

There is so much good stuff in this Q&A! A Steve Hackett In Genesis reference? Only HERE! I am enjoying the Living Force, would you recommended a few weeks back! I love the premise that Qui-Gon challenges them do not just be managers but to DO good! To get out into the field! Great life lesson, thanks for your endorsement of the book!

Ben P. Stein

Scott, my pleasure! I'm so happy you also like The Living Force book. I love the premise too! And super-happy that you also know Steve Hackett. His concerts are still amazing!

Ben P. Stein

Eric, I was blown away in real time by Jimmy's thoughts about the Force and the Jedi! I'm still contemplating them. I'm glad you learned about both prog rock and yacht rock through the Q&A. Great story about Axis and Allies! I've always been interested in playing that! Getting a good daughter in law was definitely a good deal. I play a variety of board games, including Gloomhaven (and Jaws of the Lion), Ticket to Ride, Res Arcana, and last but not least Star Wars Rebellion and Strat-o-Matic baseball! Many weekends, I play board games and have dinner with my friends the Walkers at their home and we often play a different game every week.

Eric from Phoenix

Rebellion is a great game and it totally captures the galactic civil war. There was a computer game with this same name/design in the late 90’s.

Scott St. Louis

The band? That’s a crazy flashback for a Monday! First Disco Duck and now GTR? I may need a sedative

Ben P. Stein

When the Heart Rules the Mind! The album was produced by Geoff Downes of Asia. When Steve Howe is in a band with a second guitarist, the lineup doesn't last long. Hackett said that Steve Howe told him one day in the studio, "You played so well yesterday!" Then paused and said, "What happened???

Kenny

I was tempted to not listen as I'm currently 15 chapters into the living force.(Reading it) But I couldn't wait, the title was to interesting! So far the book is good...not blowing me away, but I do find it interesting tho, it's.like I'm there doing mundane tasks with them. And you're right that it's like we're getting more time with some of the insight on what some of these Jedi were like. Thank god not mog lol Enjoyed a really great star wars conversation 👍

Mark

Brilliant Q&A gentlemen, such a deep dive conversation on the nature of the Force. It really made me take a deep contemplation on the Force and how it is represented in the movies. Oh Jimmy…I really wish you had have been in the writer’s room when those knuckleheads were writing the Acolyte. Thank-you both for enriching my understanding of Star Wars.

GB7

You sure brought your A-Game for this Q&A Ben. Well played Sir. Super chat!

Fettmatic

Awesome episode by Ben & Jimmy Mac. I wonder the Jedi had plausible deniability pertaining their diminished power & the Sith rebirth.

RedDragon313

I’m very slow getting to this, it’s been a very hectic month but great conversation! Loved it however I have to side with Jimmy on this one, I absolutely did not like The Living Force and I read it all the way through. I’m a huge prequel fan as well (bigger OT fan though). I had to read Kenobi after reading this just to remind myself that John Jackson Miller is a great author.

Brad Riverdahl

Jon Anderson and band of geeks is an amazing show…totally agree!!!
