Since 1977, the popularity of STAR WARS has led to international success. However, sometimes fans in other countries have different experiences with STAR WARS than the rest of the world. RFR V.I.P. Dominique Garant is a longtime fan who lives in Quebec who first saw STAR WARS via a French dub, which contained some inconsistencies with the version seen in the states. Making his Q&A debut, Dominique walks us through some of those differences and shares with us what it was like for him to grow up with STAR WARS in Canada! And then there’s Mog...

Thanks for another episode! Great timing, I just finished the last episode and needed more!

Tanya S

Welcome to the VIP lounge, Dominique! 🍻

zillobeast

Great episode Still got 30 mins left but have arrived at the soccer match Resonate with 1.5 speed 2 hour films Clone wars love Jimmy with the very pertinent point that if it wasn’t for the hardcore fans nobody would have watched acolyte. I don’t have Facebook but nice to hear a balanced view on the apparent Cheers

Eric from Phoenix

Wow, two Q and A’s in one week. Perfect from my flight tomorrow.

Turtle Wars

Q&A overload? No such thing!

Kyle Burress

Great inaugural episode, Dominique! You definitely hit the nail on the head with a lot of things. I'm curious about other big differences there were as far as language translations in the movies. Sucks you lost on that trivia question!

Dominique Garant

Thank you. I think i sound dreadful, but i expected as much. There are many many more translation that we might bring up in futur show, But C3P0 comes to mind: he's 6P0 in french (?!)

Marc Richard

Bravo Dominique! Ton Anglais est bien meilleur que mon Francais! Je viens du Nouveau Brunswick mais je vie en Ontario maintenant.

Joe Dallas

Welcome Dominique! I’m excited to listen. I played bass with my dad in a traveling circus band for years and one time we came to Trois-Rivières Quebec!

Dominique Garant

Thanks. I wish i spoke closer to my microphone, i realise that some words are lost. Are you close to Toronto? or maybe Northbay, which is technically not that far from where i'm at.

Dominique Garant

Great. My wife is from there. It's just very funny that you came to the one small city right between the 2 main cities :)

Turtle Wars

Nice job Dominque! Great to hear from another VIP. I liked listening to your thoughts on fandom perceptions. And I would definitely like to hear your breakdown of SW injuries and major trauma in another Q&A. I’ve spent a little time in Quebec visiting some turtle facilities and I’ll be in Toronto in a couple of weeks for a local surf rock concert. It’s nice there…good food, good dispensaries, good dungeons, but way too cold for me most of the year. Blue balls in the field…love it! Lol. I’m one of those 50-something males that liked/likes a lot of the stuff from the prequels and early clone wars seasons that many people our age complained about or hated.

Valentin

Haha en lisant ton message je me suis dis mince j ai activé la traduction sans faire exprès 😁

Valentin

Yes it was 6PO in the original trilogy. And chewie was Chiktaba in ANH, Han was Yan and the falcon was the millenium Condor 🤣

Dr Jz

Awesome awesome show! What a delight

Dominique Garant

That's great. As i said, i am in no way a hater. I'd say more i'm more of a ... whimsical over-analyzer? I dislike them on a Star Wars scale, and that basically mean i like them enough :P. The young man i was back then had way too much expectations and baggage going in. I'm wiser now and i don't really let them get to me.

Dominique Garant

Nice. Been to Toronto a lot this year, including a Nothing But Thieves show and the Money-in-the-Bank WWE PLE event.

Marc Richard

We had a nice visit to Quebec City for a few nights in June then a night in Montreal for smoked meat and bagels!

Marc Richard

We are close to Toronto and head in quite often for events. On my list to visit is a cafe on queen st called the grand order of divine sweets. They make a Han Solo in carbonite chocolate bar as well as a chocolate millennium falcon. Galactic Empire (Star Wars metal band) are playing end of the month too but don’t think I’ll be able to make it :(

Peter Beisser

Bienvenue au club, Dominique. J'ai vraiment apprécié la conversation. Tu as fait un excellent travail. Et je suis heureux que tu aies évoqué ta musique préférée! 🤘(Thanks, Google Translate).

Dominique Garant

Perfect translation. Jimmy caught me a bit off-guard with that question. It changes all the time. And as i said, favorite does not equal best. Here is an obvious exemple: After Ziggy Stardust from Bowie, my 2nd favorite is the 1990 The Cure album called Mixed-Up. Thus, it's a best-off/remix hybrid, and, in the world of music appreciation, remix are a sacrilege. Liking a remix is like the highest form of treason. So i'd never put that "foul atrocity" in a "greatest" list. But a favorite? 100%! As for "current 2024 releases", my fav this year are English Patient, Vampire Weekend, and La Luz.

Turtle Wars

Cool that you are all going to see the same band in different cities over the next week. I’ll be in Toronto at the Horseshoe Tavern for the Surfrajettes album release party on the 5th and then seeing D.R.I. in San Diego a few days after that. And I’ll have a couple of local Charleston, SC shows between now and then. Gotta love live music!

Turtle Wars

Cool, I’ll have to make time to check out that divine sweets shop when I’m in Toronto in a couple of weeks. I’ll be at the Horseshoe Tavern, which is on Queen St just a few blocks away. I had to miss Galactic Empire when they played in Charleston 2 weeks ago because I was too busy teaching a course. Oh well, hopefully next time.

Todd “Suds” Sedlacek

Great episode!! I really like your point of view on all things Star Wars. Looking forward to hearing more from you in the future!

Tyler Page

I think of the Windows XP battle in TPM on maybe a weekly basis. Captain Tarpals finest monent!

Marc Richard

I grew up in the East Coast of Canada and would always hear about some of my favorite bands playing at the Horseshoe. Finally made it there a few years back for a show. Now that my kids are older I’ve getting out for a lot of live music and loving it. Where in the Carolina’s are you? I listened to a lot of stuff from Chapel Hill back in the 90s. Merge Records put out a lot of my favorite stuff. There’s a book that was put out last spring A Really Strange and Wonderful Time about the music scene there from 1989-99. Bought the audio book but haven’t gotten around to listening to it.

Brian Koehler

I love your perspective Dominique! It's a great reminder that we're all a certain level of crazy for being here in the first place and if we disagree, it's just because we all care so much.

Scott St. Louis

Thank you for a really great show, Dominique! Not only do I know where Abitabi is, but I have been there a few times! My grandparents were Quebecois, coming to the US in 1919 and my father remained connected to family in Abitabi and Rouyn. Summer of 1980, we had a family trip to Rouyn, I was nine years old and played with my Star Wars figures for the 12 hour drive from New Hampshire. I was very disappointed to find no Empire Srikes Back toys in the stores at Abitabi! I also listen at 1.5 speed because I like my RFR faster and more intense! Looking forward to hearing more from you in future Q&A’s!

Brian Robinson

Great episode and I liked hearing the Star Wars take from the Great White North. Dominique’s perspective is shared by many, thanks man.

Luke

Ohhh Canada! Great show y’all

Tanya S

Awesome debut, Dominique! I appreciate your perspective on droid personalities. Pretty funny when you think about it. Cheers!🍻

Joe

That was a refreshing discussion. Thanks guys!

Having family in small-town Nebraska, I understand the significance of knowing which town has "the closest Wal-Mart."

Curtis in Omaha

I've been to Quebec and Quebec City once. Beautiful city! Also, I've seen and love "Bon Cop Bad Cop," so I'm practically a citizen.

Curtis in Omaha

I also got to see a free Cirque du Soleil show under a bridge. That might've been Montreal. It was awesome!

Eric from Phoenix

So true. I’m on my way home from small town Iowa and my in-laws live where the Walmart is. Of course, they had full pegs of new figures. Almost bought a Cob Vanth but didn’t have a way to make sure the card didn’t get damaged on the way home.

Eric from Phoenix

Welcome to the party Dr. Dom! Great first episode and you’re a natural. I took French in high school and can only remember how to count to 10, say thank you, ask if someone speaks English and swear. Did you play Star Wars Galaxies? Didn’t the old weekly newspaper comics series explain the 3po and R2 were really old? Seem to remember that but I can barely remember what I did yesterday. lol I’m okay with droids having different and unique personalities. My head canon is that they get unique over time due to various software upgrades, bugs, personality of their owners, job functions, etc. Andor is great but the alien designs are an F. I’m great with trying something new but they need to try harder and throw in a couple familiar species every now and then. Jimmy nailed the reason The Acolyte story was told. I wish there was a second season to complete the story but I would’ve wanted a different show runner / writers.

Marc Richard

Great show tonight in TO! Hope you Enjoy the Montreal show Dominique and same to you in Philly Peter!

Kenny

Dominique salut! Fellow Canuck here, and I really enjoyed your Q&A! Listening to you and Jimmy, I felt like we had the same experience growing up, I'm only 3 years older and through the podcast I felt like you and I felt the same about everything, especially When you mentioned the kiss at the end of R.O.S. the way you said it, if it's relative to the story great. But if you shoe horn it in,for whatever reason....I just don't care. Glad to know I'm not the only one who feels that way 🙂 Great Q&A guys!

RobO from ChicagO

Dr. Dom, one of the best MMA fighters of all time, George St. Pierre is French Canadien. I got an absolute kick out of this episode! Agreed with your opinion on the forced content.

Dale Morris

Excellent episode! I agreed with so many points. I already have friend in Quebec through other geeky pursuits (Masters of the Universe), that caused me to renew my passport so my wife and I could visit a few years back. Thankfully his english is similar to yours so it was very easy to be conversational.

Jared Cantor

Late to the party (been busy at work), but this was a fantastic VIP show with Dominique! It just shows how broad and diverse the rfr fanbase is

Ben P. Stein

Great Q&A debut! As a college junior, I went on a group trip to Montreal, and when I arrived at the hotel room I turned on the TV and saw that "The Empire Strikes Back" in French was on! I remember Yoda starting to speak in French and it felt like another movie from another world, in a good way! When my kid Finley was in middle school and was taking French, we watched The Force Awakens dubbed in French and with English subtitles, which was also fun!
