Here comes the RFR Early Bird, swooping in to make your day more STAR WARSY

A new STAR WARS trilogy headed by Simon Kinberg was revealed this week, adding to the abundance of STAR WARS film projects currently in the pipeline and early intel reveals it could feature Daisy Ridley’s character Rey becoming yet another project rumored to feature that character. Sources suggest Rey is Lucasfilm’s most valuable current STAR WARS character asset and we determine whether or not that statement is true. A new trailer for SKELETON CREW dropped and we review it, shot-by-shot. Plus, new footage for ANDOR season 2 was released and we look closely at it along with additional footage leaked from D23 Brazil.

Yay! The boys are back!

RedDragon313

Glad to have a new episode! Welcome back guys! My mornings fixing the kids breakfast and their school lunches were getting lonely! I have to say, I don’t agree that Rey is the future of Star Wars. She is a very divisive character from a trilogy that was equally disliked as much as it was liked if not even more. Honestly, I feel like there’s more to see with Obi-Wan or they could even go back and do an old republic (as long as they stay away from the High Republic and Acolyte stuff). Rey just really isn’t the way to go. No one I know can get excited for a Rey film.

Rebel Force Radio

It's not a question of popularity. The question is who is the most valuable current character asset. You cannot build the future for the franchise around Obi-Wan. We already know how his story started and how it ended. Also, it's not about what could be mined for stories. The Old Republic stories have yet to be told, thus there are no existing character assets to tap. There are many different directions the franchise can take, but it's all starting from scratch. Who is the existing character that can carry the franchise? Outside of The Mandalorian, who already has a film coming, it's going to be Rey. Who else?

Andor goes back to get the case and the journal after he escapes from prison in season 1!

Luke

Is Daisy Ridley even that enthusiastic about being this so called MVP? Her interest seems tentative at best….. she’s not out making the case for herself as the Star Wars main character. I liked Rey, but let’s be honest they didn’t make her character that compelling or fun. The writing of the last two movies stunk

Congrats on Survivor! Looking forward to hearing updates on Outlaws over the next few years! Totally agree with your analysis—Rey is the future as the “Everyman” that we can emotionally latch onto. I would love to see an animated series between Ep. 8-9, to feature Rey and gang also.

Valentin

If we are talking only about the post Disney trilogy period, my opinion is no one. There isn't a single character who is universally beloved enough to carry the franchise on his own.

Valentin

Jimmy you finally finished Jedi Survivor ?! This definitely deserves a YEEEEPEEEEE ! XD I would have liked you to talk in detail about what you thought of the game, the story and the gameplay particularly. I mean I even think it deserves an "after game" edition of RFR while your experience of the game is still fresh in your mind.

Greg from New Jersey

Totally agree on Rey! Would I rather see more Luke, Vader, Obi-Wan, Yoda, etc? Definitely, but if we’re talking about Star Wars that will capture the broader culture, the only characters that would get my wife and daughters really excited to go to the theater would be Rey and Baby Yoda. Rey is the smart choice to lead a movie.

Brian Robinson

Regardless of Rey being the most valuable current character, she won't put butts in seats. They need to release a few standalone stories and flesh out a new direction and bankable franchise star from there.

RedDragon313

They can create new characters. There’s nothing in the books saying they have to use an existing character.

Rebel Force Radio

Again, it’s not a question about popularity. It’s about potential. Name one other character that currently exists who is bankable enough to build a new trilogy around.

Rebel Force Radio

Why do you think "she won't put butts in the seats"? Each film she was in grossed over a billion dollars and Rey seemed popular with most fans, outside the "Mary Sue" crowd, of course.

Brian Robinson

The sequel films had diminishing returns and her character was less acceptable as her story arc continued throughout the trilogy. Fans are less excited about Rey after TLJ and ROS and the character is stained by her turn to a self-proclaimed Skywalker. She won’t bring the bank.

RedDragon313

I do see what you’re saying, truly, but what I’m saying is that when Star Wars first released no one knew a Luke Skywalker or a Han Solo. No one knew a Rey when the sequels came. No one knew a Qui-Gon with the prequels. No one knew an Ahsoka when the animated movie came. They can start anew with something fresh because no matter how you slice it, Rey is hardly bankable. With its focus on the sequel era it’s one reason why The Galactic Starcruiser failed and why they were bringing in other characters to Galaxy’s Edge. The sequels, as someone else mentioned, had diminishing returns. I think what box office they did make after The Last Jedi was mostly people with the attitude “well I’ve watched it this far, I may as well finish it” and after all was said and done most everyone (at least the ones I’ve talked to and interacted with online) seemed to have a genuine distaste for Rey’s arc. I was intrigued by Rey when I first saw The Force Awakens but that interest was no longer there after The Last Jedi. One big factor was that the Force just came super easy for her. Luke in Empire struggled with some rocks and lifting his X-Wing. Rey in Last Jedi was like “hold my beer” and had no problem lifting many, many boulders. It’s just stuff like that. The writing for her was abysmal. There’s no need to use an existing character. Honestly if I were Disney, I would distance myself as much as possible from the sequels. Even Rebuild the Galaxy made fun of the story arcs in the sequels so Disney is apparently well aware of its unpopularity. If they focus on Rey, it won’t pull the numbers Disney is hoping. Rise of Skywalker only broke even. Rey, unfortunately, might be the only existing character that can "carry the franchise" if chose to expand on that arc, which is a hard pill to swallow, but she can't carry Lucasfilm. Star Wars hasn’t had too many wins since Disney has taken the reigns unfortunately. Banking on what they have already done doesn’t sound like a win. Rey might pull a slight profit but it will be just that given Kathleen Kennedy can control the spending but looking at how they’ve been spending lately that’s a big IF.

Luke

Mando…. Din Djarin would be my only choice if I had to choose from existing characters… he’s a strong character. His timeline could be explored going back through the years of the OT because he is roughly the same age as Luke, Han and Leia. So you could explore his childhood being rescued by the Mandalorians. And then go forward with he and Grogu in the years leading up to the Sequels timeline. Again, I liked Rey. But the writers did her a disservice and just dumped her on Tatooine much like we found her on Jakku.

Eric from Phoenix

Yep, that’s the only character that could be “worth” as much. The movie will show if we’re right.

Eric from Phoenix

I think Rey is probably the right answer but maybe Mando / Baby Yoda? I do think there are a decent amount of characters that could sell a movie but not sure on a Trilogy. I think Boba Fett in his prime could work but I don’t see how you drive a trilogy unless you use a de-aged Han to be part of the plot.

Mai G Rashid

She lost me at I am Rey Skywalker or however it was put.. no just no.. Mando and his baby though ❤️

Mai G Rashid

@ RedDragon313: one of my pet peeves: Rey wielding the force almost instantly!!😡

Peter Beisser

Mando can't be the face of the franchise. Since we don't ever see it. Pedro is not there on set, which is probably cost effective for them, but longterm hurts the character a lot.

Turtle Wars

I have absolutely no issues with Daisy Ridley or Rey as a character. They just need a better story for her. The Rey Skywalker thing is a little strange, but who cares, IMO that’s minuscule compared to some of the other things about the sequel trilogy.

Joshua Mertz

Among the many things Disney f***ed themselves on, can we agree that adding 3000 star destroyers to a couple shots has make it so anything we see in the future won’t be as “scary” to the audience. It was forced in there, but it’s canon. Hopefully they can give us something even more terrifying in the future, but not on a massive scale

Pastor Yoda

His green lover sits by the shore every night waiting for Cas to return… 😢 (Jk she’s probably on Canto or somewhere partying)
