About an hour after our first viewing of STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI on Opening Night, we gathered in the RFR studios to discuss our initial raw reactions, opinions, and analysis. We are happy to have RFR brother Billy Mac joining us for this spoiler-intense conversation. What did we love about the film? What had a huge impact on us as fans? What was weird, unpredictable, or unexpected? We talk about the big moments, reveals, and character development in this first of many shows reviewing the eighth episode of the amazing STAR WARS saga.

Frozen Leia — Does that come in 3-3/4”?

Brian Frith

Billy Mac needs a regular spot on the show! His Lando impression is spot on! 😂

Chris Hansford

The Jedi Books were in a drawer Finn opened on the Falcon at the end of the movie. Was I mistaken?

John Riley

I thought I saw that too! Will check when I see TLJ again tomorrow.

Scott Armstrong

I enjoyed the film. More positive than negative for me.

Sean Hammac

Was just about to email them about this. Yes, Rey has the Jedi texts in the drawer.

About Yoda's glow effect, it seems the ability to come back is directly related to one of two things: either the amount of time the person has been dead (so they get more practice and can become more corporeal) or the strength of the person they are appearing to. I think it is the latter. Witness Ben - only a voice, then barely an apparition, then a glowy but somewhat solid figure, all on different parts of Luke's path. But Anakin is just as clear as Ben and Yoda at Endor. Now Luke is powerful enough that Yoda appears physically real, and can affect the living world directly.

Now, my favourite part - going back and listening to all the RFR's to hear all the guesses and comparing them to what actually happened. :)

Jason Emerick

Rey has the Jedi texts in a drawer at the end of The Last Jedi. It makes the scene where Yoda burns the tree kinda hillarious.

And I really hope we get a new Star Wars Oxygen for the new soundtrack

Jason said this was a lot more like RotJ the. Empire because it seemed to conclude as opposed to leave us on a cliffhanger. But, I think the heart of Part 2 of a trilogy is in both. Both films are about failure. TLJ develops the story arcs of Rey, Finn, Poe and Kylo and all three of them fail. Yoda telegraphs this for us by telling Luke that they need to learn from failure. Its pretty brilliant. Hopefully Ep. 9 is the big pay off for all four characters.

Patrick Games

I saw them there, as well. But then I started thinking: 1) What prompted her to take them, and 2) Did Yoda know, and was using this opportunity to TEACH Luke another lesson?! Boy, that little green frog doesn't let up, does he? ;)

Patrick Games

I'm conflicted here about the movie: It was mostly fun to watch, but there are too many aspects to it that bug me. Of which, (and this is probably the least trivial, but an example nonetheless) when Rey and Ben (Kylo) are battling Snoke's guards after his death. I don't think the guards are Force-users. So why, then, is it so difficult for two powerful Force-users, whose "raw power" scares Luke Skywalker, to dispatch these guards? It's Hollywood, I know, but not congruous with their abilities.

Patrick Games

And of course ... the BIG ONE ... why did Luke have to die? Why does Disney insist on killing of "the old guard"? Now none of the original heroes (and though I love him, R2-D2 doesn't count) remain. Yes, yes, yes ... I understand ... to foster a story with new characters for a "new generation". But this old generation is still kicking, and will continue to do so for many, many years to come.

Dropped threads that probably can't be picked back up: - how was there a map when Luke didn't want to be found? - why did R2 wake up when Rey showed up? - how'd they open the door to let Flying Leia back in the ship?

John Riley

Yeah, and so Rey’s last interaction with Luke was to beat him down, threaten him with his own lightsaber, and steal his Jedi books.

John Riley

Heck, why didn’t the guards re-apply for a job protecting Kylo...with their old master Snokeis dead, what’s to protect?

Inconsistencies and issues that can be fixed in Episode IX: -          The significance of the map. o   The map becomes irrelevant in LJ by Luke's claim that he did not want to be found, which undermines a big chunk of FA. §  How it can be fixed: Have Luke's ghost explain the one loophole in his plan – that he wanted to be found only if Ben Solo had a change of heart and wanted to seek him out. This explains why there is a map, why it is hard to come by, why the missing part was entrusted to an old friend who knew the entire story and would be able to judge if Ben was sincere, and why R2 woke up when Rey showed up – a case of mistaken identity ("I've seen this much raw power only once before…"). -          The gross undercutting of Phasma's inherent coolness o   First she lowers the shield in FA, which is something I don't think the character would ever do, then she has a hard time defeating Finn (which she did – he gained the upper hand only because she thought he was gone and was distracted by Rose), who has already demonstrated that he isn't that strong with melee weapons and so shouldn't have been as much of a challenge (he wasn't even a match for the regular trooper in FA). §  How it can be fixed: It can't, not completely, but somehow putting it out there that she lowered the shields only because she knew that Starkiller Base could not be destroyed by anything less powerful than some version of a Death Star (the Resistance fighters could not make a dent in the capacitor until it was breached from the inside, and it's easy to see how such an event would be hard to imagine for her) and she assumed the interlopers would be cut down by the very large garrison stationed there (how they were able to get around without running into hundreds of troops is one of those Star Wars conveniences we've all become used to). She needs to come back (how did she escape? Who knows? The same way she got out of a sealed garbage disposal system and off of Starkiller in six minutes) and have a truly bad ass sequence. I mean, really – she was upstaged in the "amazing warrior" department by Maz. That can't stand.
