Online controversy has exploded within the Star Wars fanbase. We take a close look at the social media situations surrounding actress Kelly Marie Tran and author Chuck Wendig. We talk about the role we are playing to promote change within the industry and community, and look closely at how DC Comics expects its talent to interact with fans via their Social Media Policy. I followed that whole Twitter thing, and many people spoke out against RFR. I have been listening for many years and I just don't see it. I love this show!

Great conversation about the recent online controversy. It’s really a shame that these things play out over as convoluted and toxic a medium as Twitter, but your discussion here really outlines your opinion and I think it’s a very well-reasoned one with the biggest takeaway being that creators engaging negatively with fans (especially the most vile and ugly of “fans”) only adds fuel to their fire and perpetuates the practice of lumping together artists and their art and vehemently condemning one along with the other. It’s a no-win situation. So thank you for doing what you do and leaving NO FAN left behind.

I'm glad you guys are tackling the subject because the ONLY way issues get resolved are when we learn to see the other person's point of view.

Stay away from Chuck Wendig. I’ve checked in on his Twitter account a few times over the past 2-3 years. A nasty, nasty guy. And way too outspoken and personal for a creator representing anything except himself.

John Riley

Agree, but I think this is less a SW or RFR problem and more a problem of all fandoms/factions on social media.

Interesting that A LOT of people listened to today's show just to pick it apart. As you said on the show- if you don't like it, DON'T LISTEN.

A show like this was bound to happen. Too many things fracturing the fandom, and social media is just a loudspeaker for it. Where is Disney? They are usually much better at managing this. They have so many rules for how the cast interacts with the public. I'm shocked really. My kids are even mired in it, and that's unusual that they notice, and even as young as they are they are asking why people from Disney are behaving like this (nope they aren't calling it Lucasfilm). I'm reading Timothy Zahn to feel better. :)

Paul M

I should add they are asking about more than just Chuck Wendig. They are asking about Rian, JJ, and others within Lucasfilm. This stuff has to stop or the property is going to be damaged forever.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. LFL needs to extend a social media policy to all their creators and public representatives. The brand deserves better protection! - JMac
