That conversation about Rey got HEATED!! I gotta agree with JMac on this one. Outstanding episode. It’s great to get away from everything happening and listen to RFR.

Blake Weaver

Man great discussion! Im on team Jason on this one with Rey. To me its only a argument if you really speculate on off screen speculation about her life. Which shouldnt be the case. Plus Luke also had inherited power in the force and still needed Yoda's training. Rey can use mind tricks in TFA just cause??? No.

Rebel Force Radio

I think her abilities in the Force come from the Force Dyad. She feeds off Kylos ability and experience, and vice versa. He made her stronger in the Force and she ushered him back to the Light Side. Good shit.

John Riley

Great fight! I agree with both of you, but mostly I agree that the Rey-Palps relationship helps to conveniently explain Rey’s speed in learning the force. But that probably means her Campbellian journey was inferior to Luke’s.

Cole Ziegler

Heated discussion. I think Jason is more in line with how I think about Rey. Great episode!

Hey guys! Long time listener, first time uh..poster? I'm kind of on the fence about Rey's incredible abilities. ON one hand, I do think it's partly Disney trying to break down "barriers" about female empowerment and all of that but I do agree with Jimmy that you can easily explain away these incredible feats. She is a natural survivor, a part of the dyad, drawing power being around Kylo and she's a vergance in the Force. Her relationship with Kylo is much like the relationship between Darth Maul and Ezra Briger and since Luke cut himself off in this time, the Force is scrambling for balance!

I have to give you guys credit for even having a passion about the sequel trilogy. I watch them all the time because my daughter loves them, but at the end of the day, I really don’t care about anything that happened in these movies. And that’s not me saying they are bad. They’re not. They are just...fine. Also if I hear J.J. say that something is surreal one more time...jeez.

That makes sense and I admit I didn't think of it that way. I think personally its hard for me to accept how unbelievably powerful she is start to ( and especially ) finish. In a Star Wars video game I can accept that power due to its format. In gaming you can be more over the top and get away with it. But in film which is the World Series of Star Wars storytelling its hard to swallow. But thank you for giving me a different view to think about :D

It hasn’t been an easy road to get there. I’m trying! And, part of me legitimately likes it because Star Wars. But Lucasfilm makes it really hard. - JMac

I’d probably slant toward JMac on the disagreement with Jason. However, I think the challenge is that Rey didn’t have as “dramatic” of an @@@ whooping as Luke got or as dramatic of a temptation toward the dark side.

I don't even understand the positions in the argument. I don't really think Rey was 'bested' by Kylo in the forest. She wasn't even trying to fight. She may have been able to fight decently. But yes of course at the end of the film she is more open to The Force and stronger. Also at the end of the film, Kylo is seriously injured because he was shot by Chewbacca's deadly (as they showed us) bowcaster. Finn was also able to fight decent because, as we now know, he had Force sensitivity. Did Rey go through the same trials as Luke? No not really. Did we see her at a low point or get 'beaten'? Well, she was never beaten necessarily. And she did show skills from the beginning because she had taught herself to fight with a staff, but also because she had natural Force instincts. But she did go through a dark time. It was when Luke turned out to not be the family/savior she thought he would be. This confused and devastated her, which is why she turned to Kylo hoping that him turning to the Light would save everyone. But he didn't either. We didn't see this well at the end of TLJ because after Rey leaves Kylo we barely see Rey again, so we don't get a clear vision of where her head is at. But she starts studying and training with Leia so she can join the fight, and then hits another low point when she finds out the blood running within her represents all the darkness that her new adopted family has hated and fought for so many years

How about we don't talk about the sequel trilogy again for a few months. It feels like listening to a heated political discussion every time the new movies come up. None of those movies are worth getting heated about. Give me a beer and let's have a few laughs about The Clone Wars instead.

I'm with JMac. Luke's pre-Death Star plans life was much more "normal" than Reys. He had two loving parent figures, friends, etc. whereas Rey had herself only. I buy her abilities in TFA and TLJ because she is shown taking care of herself in combat and doing dangerous Star Destroyer spelunking before she learned of her force powers. It's not a stretch to believe she would pick up the lightsaber quickly based on her abilities with the staff. I suppose her tapping into the force to use the mind trick can be explained by her "mind meld" with Kylo Ren in which she dipped into his mind. That being said I think Jason has a point about her facing very few challenges compared to Luke., especially in TFA. I do think she failed in TLJ. Not only did she learn that her parents were nobodies who sold her for drinking money (still wish they would have kept that) but she thought she could turn Kylo Ren back to the light and failed miserably. It's my opinion that Luke was on the brink of returning to the fight, he had re-opened himself to the force, before he walked in on the Rey/Kylo hand touch. If all that hadn't happened and she wouldn't have rushed off, perhaps Luke would have gone with her and things might have turned out different.

Hey folks I gotta make some points about the referenced Harley Quinn. 1. The live action person sucks at that part IMHO. Not the same character to me. The short shorts. The bat. Just doesn't have nuance the OG Harley has. 2. The person doing the Harley Quinn voice on the new animated series is played by Kati Cuoco, aka, Penny from The Big Bang Theory. A very adult show. Not seen it enough to have an opinion. Have had a chuckle at the previews I've seen. No one can take Ashley's place. How much they want to change the character to service the actor rather than keep it true to the established canon to service the loyal fans will determine how I react to a new casting. Ahsoka is not of a pseudo Latino descent like the 2 characters she met on level 1313 whom I appreciate. Will Rosario play Ahsoka as is? Hope so.
