In 2015, the Star Wars comic license reverted back to Marvel Comics. The release of STAR WARS #1 jumped to the top of the charts and broke records for comic book sales worldwide. Jimmy Mac joins RFR VIP Justin Brady for a look at the first year for the main title aka STAR WARS VOL. 1: SKYWALKER STRIKES. We talk about the surprise one-on-one showdown between Vader and Luke BEFORE the events of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, a showdown with Boba Fett within Ben Kenobi's former home on Tatooine and much more.

Haven't listened yet, but I love that showdown between Luke and Vader. It put Luke on Vader's radar, so to speak.

I suppose that's a good way of looking at it. I think I'm much more with Justin and Jimmy, though. If you take it seriously, it kinda takes away from the Besoin duel. I try not to think about it too much. Lol

Good conversation, gents! Like you guys, I've also not been a fan of what the folks at Marvel have done. Not even in the comics, save for some rare exceptions here and there. I wasn't even a fan of the Soule Vader comics. Though I thought it was interesting, at least. Aphra, I agree with Swank, is WAY too snarky. And that's something that doesn't jive with my personality at all. Anyways, I thought your closing comments were insightful, as I have a tendency to treat Star Wars stories a little more seriously and it's good to be grounded now and then...yet I just read the Dark Horse run of the Rebellion comics that told the stories of the characters in the same time span as these Marvel ones and think they are far superior. It focuses on really just the Big Three. No annoying characters to come in and trod on their territory like a Sana or, heaven forbid, an Aphra. And the storytelling is gripping. It shows a real level of passion for storytelling first that this run doesn't. And that's something a bit more important in my book.

I think imagination needs to come first for Star Wars. If it can't push boundaries, then what's the point? That's what Star Wars has always been about, and why so many of the old EU stories worked so well.

“I’ve been looking forward to this”

Peter Beisser

Gotta be proud of those comics. I'd be at New York Comic Con right now for the 12th year in a row if the world wasn't wack. And I'm never embarrassed. I take pride in being a normal dude who digs that stuff. Shows non-fans that reading funny books might just be cool.

Blake Weaver

Really enjoyed the discussion. I got the marvel app just for Star Wars comics so I can read them for the first time ever. Really appreciated this!

There's something about the comic book medium that let's me just sit back and enjoy without knit picking whatsoever. I must admit the main attraction here is the artwork as far as my interest goes, although there have been some exciting moments, primarily for me in the second Vader run. I didn't know the #screwaphra was a thing, but I'm proud to say that I can't stand her comics either. Sana and her cheap thrill entrance as Han's wife was lame too.

Josh Carter

Lol, perhaps I still do pick knits with the comics?

Scott Armstrong

Possibly. But what I like about the comic scene is that Luke mentions Obi-Wan and Vader sees Luke holding his old lightsaber. Doesn't work for everyone, but it worked for me.

Howard Robison

I think the show was good, I am glad they pointed out the original marvel run.

Ryan Parker

Just came here to say I am enjoying this episode and I hope to see more in future exploring the current Marvel run!

Ryan Parker

For those like Jimmy who dig Charles Soule, don’t sleep on the Poe Dameron run he did! The first arc was iffy but it got really good from there.

Great job Justin! I read every EU book from 1993 until Nov 1999 when my oldest son was born. Just couldn’t keep up the purchases :). Thanks for going into the new Marvel series. I need to eventually check some of this stuff out. I’ve never really read any of the comics out side of the book adaptations that Dark Horse did in the 90’s.
