The Dark Trooper phase 3 was consists of figures from Legacy Collection.

Loved Dark Forces, the original game. Still get chills thinking about facing General Mohk at the end! - I think you can still play it over Steam.

Great episode, brought back a lot of memories. I remember my best friend had Shadows of the Empire on N64, so I got to watch him play at his house. I only had a PC, and the game required a "3D Accelerator," which we did not have, so I never got the game myself. We did have Dark Forces though. Wasn't there a level where all your weapons got taken and you had to fight a monster with your fists? I used to think it was a Krayt Dragon, but it looks nothing like what we saw in Mandalorian. Then I remember getting Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. It was on 2 CD-ROMs. I will never forget beating the last level on the first disc, then putting the second disc in... only to discover that someone had screwed up, and given us a CD full of screensavers for the Juan Oaks Country Club instead of the second disc of Dark Forces II!!! The game also came with a expansion called Mysteries of the Sith. But the only way you could install the expansion was if you first put in the Dark Forces II Disc 2. It was such a let down! Eventually I bought (or begged my parents to buy) a second copy of the game at a Circuit City (or maybe it was CompUSA). But I went a long time never knowing how the story ended.

Anytime I get to hear Star Wars video game talk I’m a happy man!

Philip Ehlke

That’s right! You fight a creature called a “Kell Dragon” with your bare fists, and the same dragons appear in Dark Forces II. Star Wars Bounty Hunter has a Krayt Dragon but it has limbs. Geez, yeah they had to spread the game across 2 discs because of the cutscenes. I’ve had similar issues buying used from GameStop. 😛

Peter Beisser

And you just had to bring up Chewy getting smashed by that moon, huh? I was just recovering from that ridiculousness. Only took 20 years (wow, 20 years already).

Matt Marks

Ahh, Kell Dragon. I think I used a cheat code to beat that. LALAME or something for God mode. They all started with LA for Lucas arts.

Philip Ehlke

Definitely made good use of a bunch of those cheats, but only on subsequent playthroughs. Fun to explore every nook and cranny of those games. There’s something highly rewarding about discovering secret treasure areas

Matt Marks

LAPOGO was the one I used most often. Let you jump up to high areas. I think I only used the God mode one for the dragon level.

Matt Marks

Actually, no. Now I remember... I used the one to give myself all the weapons. And then I shot the blasted creature.

Kenny Wymore

Love the video game talk! Never did beat Dark Forces or Jedi Outcast back in the day. I got them off Steam a couple years back in a bundle and need to revisit them.

The 1st Star Wars poster was the Tom Jung SW poster, it was darker; more sci-fi…… GL wanted a more fantasy look so he hired the Hildebrandt bros to re-do it. They were well known for their fantasy & LOTR posters and illustrations in the 70s. They took the EXACT same Jung poster design & just repainted it in their style….. which is amazing...totally fantasy. That is the iconic SW poster of my childhood...the one I had hanging up in my bedroom for like 5 years. But the Jung poster is a classic of cinematic movie poster design, that was the poster that was in all theatres in '77. It's the poster that gets the top ticket prices at auctions.

Dark Forces II was the first SW game I ever played.

I can't even tell you how much time I spent playing the Jedi Knight series. Jedi Academy was absolutely amazing with the introduction of the double-bladed lightsaber. Jedi Fallen Order definitely teleported me back into those times!

Philip Ehlke

There's one crazy secret area with a hidden Ewok on one of the Dark Forces levels. You need the Pogo cheat to access it. There's a similar cameo in DFII by Max from the Sam and Max video games

Fun episode Phillip and JMac. I have a bunch of random comments: 1) I agree Defender was tough but what about Dragons Lair? Cost $.50 and was freaking impossible. 2) Rebellion - this was an awesome concept with poor execution. I still have it and play it occasionally. Grand galactic conquest with all of the main and many secondary characters. The problem was you were required to micromanage too many details. Fantasy Flight Games released a Rebellion board game that totally captures the spirit of the video game and it is way easier to play. 3) Dark Forces - great video game I played on PC. The sequel was awesome because it included live action video ( first Star Wars live action since Ewok Adv.) and you could choose a light or dark side path. The game and cut scenes changed based on your decisions. I went dark side the first time and killed Jan at the end of the game. 4) Kryat - I know I pronounced it incorrectly during the Mandalorian after show. When we played Star Wars Galaxies I heard it pronounced that way and the people I grouped with all said it that way. Clearly incorrect but I will always think our pronunciation was correct 😁 5) and also with you - JMac you called this out before it played out on the Mandalorian chapter. Crazy! I grew up going to a Lutheran church and there are responses where you say, “and also with you” during the service. So, It was cool to hear that called out on screen.

So I've been behind on listening to these Q&A's, so I just listened to this one. Man, so I started playing Dark Forces for the first time ever not too many months ago and stopped, in part due to the frustration those old games provide, but after hearing this episode and reading some of the comments about the story and being able to choose either light or dark side endings, I might just have to get back into it! (Though I'm scared of fighting this dragon with only bare fists...) You guys really nailed it. But no one ever said anything about being able to see the future: How did you guys predict the Dark Troopers would show up in The Mandalorian! So great! And this conversation has gotten me pumped about them all over again. Thanks so much!

Also, cool bit of Star Wars gaming info. General Mohk and his ship, the Arc Hammer, are in the rts game Empire At War. He builds dark troopers over whatever planet you station him. Pretty cool the way the game uses them, all three phases. Very deadly! I always tried to use them whenever I could.
