Shadows of the Empire was an amazing multi-media event from the mid-90s that was known as "movie marketing without a movie". The story played out via comic books, action figures, trading cards, a novel, videogame, and even a soundtrack! RFR VIP Nate Wenzel joins Jimmy Mac for a look back at this ambitious addition to the STAR WARS saga, along with what it was like to be a hardcore Star Wars fan in the nineties.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to chat with you Jimmy Mac! Loved going through Shadows and everything else in between :) Hope everyone enjoys the show!

VHS expert here, Nathan. (Well, I worked at a video store in high school at least). Tapes had three modes to record based on quality of picture. 2 hours on SP. 4 hours for LP. 6 on SLP. You guys recorded it in the best quality, hence missing out on Yub Nub. Solid hosting on the show this week!

Nathan Wenzel

Ha! We really screwed up. Then again it set up my fandom and longing for new Star Wars for years to come so one mistake leads to a lifetime of memories :) Appreciate the comment and compliments!

Kirk Leppert

Great episode, Nate! Looking forward to you hosting again.

Blake Weaver

I love these deep dives into the 90’s. I was born in 89’ so I was real young that decade. I know all the names of games and books though so this is a great Star Wars history lesson for me.

Rob Heaton

Jimmy you mentioned the fact that Dash properly shouldn't have had anything to do with the Battle of Hoth, making the video game level a curious thing, but the designers talk about it here in a recent YouTube documentary, wanting to introduce an element of familiarity with the movies: https://youtu.be/6gsmE_hoNsI?t=1640 The whole documentary is a really interesting watch but that ties in most appropriately with your observations. I enjoyed your chat with Nathan... it was nice to hear from another fan in my era of SW fandom (1985 births ftw) as well!

Nathan Wenzel

Great point Rob! Shout out to the year Marty went back in time!

Adrian

Man I love jimmy Mac, rebel force radio, and I think Nathan did a fantastic job but after 2 weeks of build up it would have been nice if you guys actually talked about shadows of the empire. It was just frustrating since only like 15% of the episode was actually about shadows.

Marc Laferriere

Great Q and A - steam had a recent sale on SW games so it’s been nice hearing about them before playing.

Nathan Wenzel

Thanks did the feedback Adrian! Iand thanks for the heads up Marc !

Rebel Force Radio

Probably frustrating for Nate too. I get focused on meeting someone who also enjoys Star Wars and I let the conversation naturally flow. Having to stick to a certain agenda is difficult for me when I just want to talk. While the Q&A does tend to have a focus on certain subject matter, it's really only a foundation for a bigger conversation.

another great one! Fun fact - Bill Gates loved Buddy Holly so much the music video was included on the windows 95 cd rom.

Great job Nate! Tons of fun listening to this episode. A couple thoughts: 1) Bothans and Teras Kasi. Bothans were a playable species in the old Star Wars Galaxies game. Very cool to finally see them in person. https://swg.fandom.com/wiki/Bothan Also, Teras Kasi was a profession available in the game. The weapon used by Dryden Voss was commonly used by players who had Teras Kasi profession in the game. 2) Kevin J. Anderson. My wife and I met him a couple years ago at Salt Lake Fan X. He’s a great guy and told some great stories. One of which I’m going to save for a different day 😁

So I've been behind on the Q&A's but just listened to this. Man, you guys did great! The chemistry was off the charts in your guys' excitement! I can relate, as I was born in 84 so, as I mentioned in my episode, this era was a big deal for me. (Btw, you mentioned in the episode you'd wanna talk to me sometime. I'm totally down for that!) SOTE is still far and away one of my top SW stories of all time, hands down. And you guys talked about a lot of stuff I never knew about before but have always wanted to know. I'll definitely have to get my hands on that Secrets of SOTE book. Never heard of it before. And now I can't wait to watch that making of SOTE documentary someone posted below! Hey, one last thought. Whatever really happened to Dash...? I remember he was said to have died at the Skyhook battle, but doesn't he mischievously reappear at the end of the game? I can'r clearly recall. We're anymore stories ever written about him past SOTE? (I could look it up, but where's the fun in that?) Anyways, the anticipation was palpable for this one. Well done for your first episode man! It'll be exciting to hear what you guys do next. Shoot, maybe even cover some more of this "silver era". I'd love to hear some in-depth discussion on Thrawn and the rest, even the more obscure ones.

Nathan Wenzel

Thanks Eric from Phoenix! And Sean from Warsaw, lets chat man! DM me would be fun to set up a chat about all stuff 90’s Star Wars!

Sean W. from Warsaw

Btw, I totally agree with what you guys were saying about the quality of SW storytelling in this story as compared with what we get nowadays. SOTE just captures the spirit of SW in ways so little else does. It's really hard. It's that high spirited adventure that feels so much like classic SW it kinda hurts that they never kept it up with a sequel or more Dash Rendar or anything. Even the name Dash Rendar is one of the most Flash Gordon-like names I've ever heard. So good!

Sean W. from Warsaw

Oh yes, I'm a HUGE fan of the soundtrack! I bought it way back close to when the game came out and still listen to the CD. One of my all time favorite soundtracks. Sounds so much like Williams!

Sean W. from Warsaw

You can tell it's not Williams, but at the same time you can tell he's really inspired by him. So good! Such a shame they never did more with the composer.

Sean W. from Warsaw

Sounds good! Unfortunately I know next to nothing about how to message anyone outside of this forum, though. How do I do it?

I know I am late to the party but I finally got around to this episode a couple weeks back (WFH has killed my podcast listening time) and ever since I was on a mission to load up Shadows from my CDROM from 1997 on Windows 10 which was an EPIC FAIL! Something about a game from the 90's not understanding Windows 10 :) But as an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriber, yesterday EA Play for PC became available as part of the GPU subscription and low and behold - Shadows is included! I used their installer to get it downloaded and installed. Have yet to fire it up (waiting for Jedi: Fallen order to d/l) but hope to try it tonight! MTFBWY All!!
