RFR VIP Edward Ramoska was eight-years old when THE PHANTOM MENACE hit theaters in 1999. Jimmy Mac was eight years old when the original STAR WARS debuted in the summer of '77. In this episode, the OT generation meets the PT generation as Jimmy and Edward share their memories from the Special Editions and appreciation for The Phantom Menace.

Yeah...can't wait to listen to this on my commute tomorrow... Thanks guys.

John Riley

Qui-Gon may not be necessary to TPM, but his role is glorious. He is the conscience and the purity and virtue of the Jedi Order of that period. Agree that Obi Wan could have stayed with him in Mos Espa...oh well.

What is this like the 5th q&a in 2 days... rfr is killing it right now

David Glading

I'm old enough to remember glass lined thermos' too! talking of flight suits, i always found it weird in phantom menace that the naboo starfighter pilots wore those huge winter coats. could not have been comfortable

Peter Beisser

When I think of Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hutt, I still think of The Phantom Menace and how many times I ate there in the summer of '99 after freshman year of college. Way too many.

Ian savage

How does an imperial officer eat with an electric death tooth in their mouth? Or is it always in their pocket to ingest when needed?

DarthMosk

As long as the officer doesn’t eat electric eels I’m guessing it’s stable? Lol

I’m still backed up on Q&As but I had to jump into this one! Love all the prequel talk and the qui-gon perspective!

Diana Orr

Great episode. I enjoyed listening to Eddie’s view of PT. His Mom raised him right. Interesting take on Qui-Gon. What puzzles me is Qui-Gon’s line to Anakin “Perhaps I killed a Jedi”, not sure that’s how you talk to kids???

Great show! I was born in '84. Had to watch the wars dubbed by my dad on vhs. I did not own any official OT releases until the THX '95 release. Didn't get to feel the theatrical releases till the special editions and the prequels. Thanks for talking about all those awesome things and making me remember that magical time.

Jason zurheide

Great show fellas. As someone who was 6 when TPM came out this episode resonated strongly. And I agree brother! Attack of the clones was a favorite of mine for so long. I had so many question as a 9 year old and it felt like a deep web of mystery. Who is sifo-dyas? Who’s this count dooku guy? The whole montage of Anakin going out to find his mother. Prequel hate killed me as a kid because those movies were everything to me. Love to see all the love they receive these days, especially Hayden. May the force be with you all!

I have always loved Qui-Gon and always will, but geez, this kind of blew my mind. It would have been a much more engaging film if it was an Obi-wan hero’s journey.

Matthew Dillingham

George explains Obi Wans line about Yoda being his master in the end of revenge of the Sith when Yoda says something about “more training for you I have, an old friend” Qui Gon thing. That’s how I’ve always taken it

Jared Cantor

Late to the party but had to echo the sentiment that this was an amazing episode. Love that more VIPs are raising their hands and doing these shows. And what a great mom! I always love hearing about parental bonds formed around Star Wars.

Patrick Palen

Awesome episode! Thanks Jimmy Mac and Edward. As a guy who grew up on the Prequel Trilogy, I really appreciated this. MTFBWY!

I do really like the idea of Obi-wan being featured in the Phantom Menace, but Qui-gon is such a good character. Like Filoni said in the making of the Mandalorian, his loss in episode 1 pushes Anakin closer to becoming Vader, because Anakin loses that father figure, and the Jedi Council loses Qui-gon’s perspective, which could have helped them steer away from politics and not get so embroiled in Palpatine's trap. Maybe we meet in the middle and have Qui-gon killed by Maul during their first encounter on Tatooine? Then Obi-wan would have to grow up and lead the Naboo assault alone, and take on and defeat Maul alone. As always though, awesome show! the Q&A's are fast becoming my favorites on here.

Adam Taylor

Great show! I’m kinda in the middle of you two, I was born in 1980, so although I’m most definitely an OT fan, I got to see the Prequels release as an adult and was able to buy the tie in material. Love both Trilogies so much.

Jeremy Hopper

Ya, and I loved so much what Filoni said about Qui-Gon in the roundtable for Mandalorian season one. I had never thought about it that way, but gives so much more perspective and power to the prequels and their effect on the OT

Jeremy Hopper

AOTC always used to be my favorite. I loved defending something that most people said they hated. And I really enjoyed it when it first came out. With time and perspective, it actually may be my least favorite of the original 6, mostly because 3 feels so much more emotional and important, and 1 is so incredible creative. A lot of 2 kind of feels like meandering now, and the least interesting to me to watch. But I also kind of feel that way about Empire. Shrug...Anyway, I'm sure much of my devotion to AOTC centered around me being 16 when that movie came out, and Natalie being a total smoke show in that movie

Jeremy Hopper

Where is the special edition trailer that was discussed!?!

Eric from Phoenix

My wife still can’t eat their food due to Celebration 1. The only food available was from those three vendors and she was three months pregnant. With all the wet, sweaty nerds the smell pushed her over the top :)

So I'm way late to respond to this episode: My son was born the same day this was released! So I've been out of the loop, needless to say, but I'm starting to make up the episodes with this one. And what a great episode! I was supposed to record my episode with Jimmy a few days after this, but obviously I couldn't do it with the little one having been born. Regardless, this episode more than made up for it! I've always loved the prequels immensely; and like so many folks on here, I've been wanting to hear this kind of conversation for a long time. It's relatively rare. Never understood the perspective people have to just slander them and not offer anything constructive or interesting or a balanced perspective. Thank you so much! Even moreso because Qui-gon is actually my favorite character in Star Wars, period. I thoroughly believe that while we don't necessarily have a POV character we can necessarily relate to, Qui-gon is essential to the telling of this story. It offers a strong standard by which Obi-wan can be measured, and subsequently the rest of the Jedi later on. He offers the needed perspective of where Obi-wan, the Jedi, and Anakin go awry later in the trilogy. But more to just TPM, he is the guiding, mentor character that's so important to this type of storytelling. It's important to see Obi-wan as a young man learning directly from his master so we can later look back as he progresses into his older years in the PT to see if he is more like Qui-gon or not. As for TPM, Qui-gon himself is the window to the wider world through whom we can better understand the complexities of what's going on in the broader sense. I would argue this film is Obi-wan's story, though, because it opens and closes with him. He starts as a certain character and ends as a different, changed and more developed one, especially after he loses Qui-gon. He was willing to defy the council to honor his master, something he would never have done before the end of the story. He learns a greater sense of compassion, which we see in stark contrast to his reaction to Jar Jar and Anakin earlier as "pathetic life forms." Qui-gon is essential in almost every way to the story. :D

Great job Eddy! Here are a couple thoughts / comments: 1)My favorite SE trailer was the first one that started showing Star Wars on a small TV. For an entire generation people have experienced Star Wars the only way it’s been possible... https://www.starwars.com/video/special-edition-trilogy-trailer 2)Luke’s Jedi coat reminds me of Kirk’s in Wrath of Kahn. Same concept just different color. 3)Qui-Gon needed to be in Ep 1 as he was Anakin’s father figure. Can’t wait for your next Q and A!
