Being an HR professional for almost 30 years, I really dislike how Lucasfilm handled the Gina Carano issue. I don’t typically like to get into about what Lucasfilm does legally. Hire and fire whom they will. I will choose what to watch or not. I am not a fan of the trendy term, “cancel culture”. It’s lazy/poor management. From my view of what i know, I think Gina made some remarks the senior leadership didn’t agree with last year and told her to stop or else this could result in further corrective action up and including termination and then she said something that they didn’t agree with again and opted to term her. Without discussion. Which is more common today because these organizations know that the media is on their side with certain issues and public opinion generally won’t favor the person accused. Everything is too dramatic and hyperbolic. No one wants to give people the ability to grow if they are in the lime light or leadership, or on the unfavorable opinion of a group. As an experienced HR executive this is NOT how I would want to handle things in any organization i worked with especially when they have people spewing things senior leadership seems agree with (as they aren’t acting on it publicly) but are seemingly ok with some at Lucasfilm angering fans or demeaning fans that don’t agree with their point of view by not addressing it similarly to how they addressed Gina Carano. Fairness goes both ways. That is the crux of their problem and it demonstrates that unfortunately Lucasfilm is not an ideal workplace that is accepting of everyone, only those that agree with their view of the world, so people that want to work with them that have an opposing opinion need to keep quiet... for now. I think this stems from the top leadership, likely Kathleen Kennedy, and perhaps whoever is overseeing them at Disney. But this behavior is not sustainable. They will lose out of good talent long term if they continue down this path. In the world of 24/7 news and social media, businesses, especially those that have high contact with the public are going down a path that is frightening for people who may not being doing what they are accused of but the company wanting to avoid negative attention chooses to eliminate quickly problems as they see it. When are people allowed to grow and develop? How can they when subjective failure results in immediate termination. I know we all have differing opinions, however, we also need to respect the fact that we have differing opinions and not demean someone for them. There are obvious things that are legally wrong: threatening harm to someone, murder, lying, sexual harassment, etc... As Jimmy Mac stated, we are still in the early adoption phase of social media. I am concerned with a growing trend of younger people and people in general avoiding respectful conversations of opinions in person or online. I have hope in humanity and that we can overcome this. May the Force be with you... Rant over, thank you for coming to my Ted talk as the kids say now days.

Also just my 2 cents about pronouns out there. Asking people to put pronouns in there bio is asking for trans people to “out” themselves which is messed up.

Cant wait for this whole thing to be in the past Edit - for those interested 55:40 is when the rest of the episode starts.

Commander Bly

Great show, gentlemen! Thank you!!!

Antonio from NJ

I believe the rumor was the actor who played Aladdin in the live action movie. Would be a good choice imo. edit -the actor is Mena Massoud Haha Tem is the man

Gina did a great interview with Ben Shapiro! He is the man! Thought it was very eye opening...but so sad and frustrating..... What happened to her has definitely colored everything coming down the line, now, I hate to say. I was so excited about Bad Batch and the rest coming...now the brand has, unfortunately, been affected. Hearing the news on these future projects should have been a relief for me, but the wound is too raw.... I'm so thankful for RFR keeping the enthusiasm going. Not sure how you guys do it! I'm keeping to Jimmy's encouragement from last episode, at the end; and I'm trying to keep the proper perspective that these new stories are from storytellers I respect, not the company itself--but still struggling with where that line is. I even have my next Q and A episode coming and I'm having a hard time feeling it, man! Any words from anyone to get me out of the dumps? Help me, RFR community and Jimmy Mac, you're my only hope!

Antonio from NJ

Hey Sean, hope all is well. Even if we disagree on somethings I really hope you dont lose the passion for the Wars. Especially the Q&A stuff - I really enjoyed your episodes. As Jimmy always quotes Qui Gon - our focus determines our reality. Seriously man - the great thing about SW is it can unite so many because of the story. It is about hope. Plus some sweet laser swords :D Btw whats your favorite SW video game from the 90s?

Sean W. from Warsaw

Thanks, A M! Your encouragement is much appreciated. The more I think about it, the more I'm not willing to let a couple bad apples ruin something so great for me. Star Wars is way too important to me to let them win! As for the Q and A stuff, I'm glad you enjoyed my episodes. :D Good bit of encouragement for my next one, for sure. Regarding your question about my favorite SW game from the 90s, it would have to be Shadows of the Empire, hands down. I have such an incredibly warm place in my heart for that novel, comic, game, etc. The whole multimedia project was fantastic! What's your favorite SW game from then?

Sean W. from Warsaw

Lol! It was pretty funny! I feel like that's something I would do. I've almost done it a couple times in my Q and A episodes....

Kevin H

You’ve got this, Sean. If you still like the content being made, then don’t worry about how the sausage is made. There was drama in the 70’s but no social media to cause the uproar we have today. Bad Batch is likely to be awesome! And or is getting more interesting as we get closer. Ashoka is intriguing, Boba Fett should be action packed! And finally the Mandalorian will return and will only get better. Some people may come and go but that happens in business. We will all live. 😀

This is why I could never do a qa, I'd be way too darn nervous. You should have seen me on machtails over the summer....needles to say I should not have had so many beers 😅

Sean W. from Warsaw

They're not nearly as nerve wracking as I thought they'd be, honestly. Jimmy is really good about mellowing you out and keeping it conversational. I remember I was super nervous on my first one, but just before the show we talked for like ten or fifteen minutes just to get to know one another and break the ice, first. After that it flowed fairly well. As long as you have something good to talk about, it all comes out!

I think we need T shirts that say “STFU AND JUST MAKE STAR WARS” to wear to celebration.

I was in 6th grade when Shadows came out and didnt have a N64. My brother-in-law did and any time I could play Shadows with him I jumped at the chance. So many good memories around those gaming sessions. He is also one of the people who got me into comics, and sci-fi. For me though it has to be Dark Forces through and through. I got the game when my dad bought our first PC and I was hooked. I really like the whole series but specifically that first one. The idea of stealing the death star plans, the fight against Fett, Kyle and Jan as characters, the Moldy Crow. Just so much fun. I was born just too late to see any of the OT in the original run so for me DF was the first time I could not just read about SW but live in that universe. Honestly if it wasnt for the video games like KOTOR, Shadows and Dark Forces - I might not be a super fan like I am today. I really hope we are about to enter a new golden age of SW games because I want kids today to have that same feeling. Getting to be the hero in a SW story is something I think we all wanted at one point hah.

Eric from Phoenix

Sean, just think about what you love about Star Wars. Focus on the positive. Hard to pick my favorite Star Wars game from the 90’s but probably Dark Forces. So much fun and I felt like I was in the universe.

Eric from Phoenix

That’s hilarious! I typically listen to the podcast version as the functionality is better than listen on the Patreon app (turns off when you lock the screen). (Edited, I just realized I can download on the Patreon app, lol). On the edited version they reference the burp bu JMac must have edited the actual sound out. I wasn’t sure what Jason did but I knew it was funny.

Eric from Phoenix

Great episode guys and thanks for playing my voicemail!

Hey Sean, let me join the chorus of patreon subscribers who hope you keep it up with the Q&A shows. Q&A is one of the best shows on RFR, and yours are up there with the top. I think you and I may differ on our political bents, but I hope this whole issue doesn't de-rail your fandom, and I know from previous shows you've done, and from some texting back and forth we've done, that you and I agree on much of the spirituality metaphors in Star Wars. I hope we can all realize that we all have much more in common than differences. I do think Gina went too far with her last post, but I don't think she deserved to be fired. And after learning more about how it all went down, I'm really disappointed in how LucasFilm handled it. But Star Wars is bigger than any one person, including Kathleen Kennedy, and it would be a shame for the rest of us to lose hearing your Star Wars perspective because of a poorly handled HR and PR issue. As Jyn said "it's not a problem if you don't look up." Don't keep your head down on this one. Think about the RFR response, and RFR fan response to this crappy issue. To me, it's been surprisingly reassuring. Anyway, hope to hear you chatting with Jimmy again!

Sean W. from Warsaw

Thank you, man. That encouragement certainly does help. That's kind of the conclusion I've been coming to, honestly. I'm definitely going forward with my Q&A's, man! I've got way too much to say and I've prepped for way too long to not go through with it. The response from folks like yourself has been truly edifying to me that I must be doing something right, and I certainly don't want to take that for granted. Nor Star Wars. It's cause for deep concern on my part whose hands it's in for sure, and that does color it for me a bit. But I'll keep plugging away and latching onto the good stuff, regardless, knowing there is a difference between the corporation and the storytellers proper. Tonight is my Q&A, so stay tuned! I definitely will need this episode to help get me back into that old passion I feel has been shot to pieces a bit. It'll be good to talk to a hardcore fan like Jimmy again and get your guys' thoughts on the show when it airs. If anyone can get me back it's you guys and Jimmy! Thanks again for the kind words. Hopefully my episode tonight goes well. It's gonna be super dense by its nature, so I'm a little unclear as to how best to approach it. Gonna take my time with it, even if it has to be split across more than this Q&A: My topic is "What Does It Mean to Be a Skywalker?" It's a question I've thought a ton about since TROS's last scene where Rey takes on the family name. Alot to unpack!

Jeremy Hopper

To be fair, JM, it’s only reckless for Gina to continue tweeting if we believe she should have to keep her opinions secret while Left-leaning employees aren’t asked to do that. You said it seems personal, and it is, because she’s so brazenly and openly going against the current woke social agenda.

Jeremy Hopper

STFU and just make Star Wars is the advice every company should take. I don't need OREO telling me their latest thoughts about gender and sexuality. Just make your yummy cookies
