Is table-top gaming becoming a stronger influence on current-day STAR WARS storytelling? Does pen-and-paper role-play gaming like D&D have a big effect on how saga stories like STAR WARS: THE HIGH REPUBLIC are told? RFR VIP Matt Rashid has a history with RPG and discusses this topic with Jimmy Mac, who knows little to nothing  about the subject. Plus, a little bit of talk about THE BAD BATCH, The Expanded Universe and more!

I'm slowly working my way through all of the old Q&As. Lots of great ideas in this one. I'm hoping a Q&A after dark will happen! I'm still looking forward to a Patreon hangout in Indianapolis if it ever comes to fruition. I'm not a gamer but I'd be down for some lessons or just drink some beers and watch it all!

Always look forward to a Matt Rashid episode 🙂

I don't know... I enjoyed the high republic book and newest one is much more focused. I hear what jimmy saying about the first book feeling too expansive. But again I enjoyed it..maybe listen to the audiobook? This way the different voices really separate flat and round characters. Might help you focus on who matters. few more thoughts: Jimmy I don't know how but we are going to get you to play a D&D game and if possible get you too finish Kotor. Feel like if we have some beers, some good grass, and good people you'll be hooked in a second. Thinking Rebel Fest Radio? Can't wait And Kyle needs to be the dm Also for a NYC meetup - if we do it across the river in Jersey City it is much cheaper, a 5 min subway ride to the city, AND we should do it at Barcade which is like our galloping ghost. And guess what game Barcade has? The Star Wars Trilogy! I mean a live show from there would be awesome! "Home | Barcade® | Jersey City, New Jersey" https://barcadejerseycity.com

Great conversation guys. Loved listening to it at work today.

Wouldn’t be able to make it to Indianapolis, but I certainly wouldn’t miss an RFR event here in NYC if it ever happens! As far as D&D, I think you might have had the wrong idea about it Jimmy. I really think you’d LOVE it with the right DM and crew (and adult beverages). The friends I play with are all extremely funny and it really just feels like ball busting and hanging with friends, except role playing as our characters. If the DM is sufficiently creative and funny, the possibilities are endless. There doesn’t have to be a strict set story either, my DM has written our entire campaign himself but we have gone off in so many different directions that he just rolls with the punches and I think most of the places we’ve gone/things we’ve done were never planned from the beginning. But yeah, we gotta get you playing with the right people. I’d love to see how it goes!

I’d be down to listen to you playing D&D. There is a Star Wars version out there. I’ve never played but either but it sounds like a good time, instead of poker night one time ha.

Im trying to get them to do Barcade in Jersey City - overall cheaper night out and hotels + they have the star wars trilogy arcade game. Also are you in NJ?

I've played one D&D game that was in the SW universe, but thats was us using D&D and we just made it in SW. Lots of fun. And I agree I would def watch a youtube series of an RFR SW dnd game. It has to be a "late night" watch for sure though. I'd love to see them getting drunk and roleplaying.

Sheeeeeeet! I would throw out a donation to get in on a round table drinking episode!

Peter Beisser

Yeah, I'd be in for driving up from Philly to NJ/NYC to meet up with locals from this gang.

I did SW rp'ing for many, many years, from my early teens to about a year or so ago (age 35). The possibilities for what you always wanted to see in a character in SW only become more and more appealing to create yourself. You get hooked. As such a massive SW fan, Jimmy, I think, especially given what you said about how you want a more human driven story, that your creativity would go nuts and you'd be able to make a compelling character story. Start small, and gradually work your way up. But you should totally take the plunge with this idea and see where it goes. Aren't there online gaming groups, too? I remember Kyle Newman mentioned he's done those. So, you already have the perfect in, Jimmy!

I’m enjoying The High Republic. Marc Thompson’s performance in the latest book is one of his best, in my opinion. They are definitely trying to push too many characters at once, but the narration certainly helps to differentiate them.

I was thinking the exact same thing about a NYC area meetup—staying at a hotel right across the water such as the Sheraton Lincoln Harbor in Weehauken is so much cheaper with easy access to Manhattan. I also am hanging on to The High Republic for now. I haven’t read the new book yet but the most compelling and interesting character I’ve encountered so far is Marchion Ro from Light of the Jedi. Jimmy’s D&D analogy does seem apt in terms of all the characters carrying out different quests in the same large “world.”

Great show as usual! I am really enjoying the perks of being a Patreon member! I live real close to Indianapolis, so I would be down for a RFR meetup if one was to be planned there!

Travis Dyer

Sign me up for the RPG portion!! I have always wanted to play d&d!! I would love to try the Star Wars d&d

This was a great episode! I started GMing a Star Wars campaign back at the start of Covid, April 2020, it's messenger based (definitely not as fun as in person, but it's worked well for my group). What was meant to be a week long thing is still going. It's rounding out to be a trilogy of linked campaigns. Having an absolute blast!!

Finally got around to listening to this episode. Good episode. Great to hear good 'ole Rashid back on the Q&A. I'm all for a Rebel Fan Fest in wherever USA. Although I must admit I've never played a RPG/D&D/etc, so maybe either have a beginners table or some area where us novices/non-players can congregate and drink some spotchka and make comments from the peanut gallery. :)
