Alright, Eric from Phoenix, Make it Good!

Javier Solorzano

I saw ESB at the Coronet on Geary Street in San Francisco, one of the Preview theaters for ANH, the North Point theater was the 1st one. They showed the Looney Tunes cartoon "Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century" before the main feature (it was an amazing, total surprise experience for everyone & a 14 year old me). GL loved the Coronet so much, it's almost guaranteed that he demanded that cartoon programming before ESB, "...for the kids". Still to this day, that is my all time greatest SW theatrical experience ever, other than seeing the original ANH.

Antonio from NJ

I'm still convinced 'Eric From' is a droid designation like IG. There's EF Phoneix, EF Nashville, etc. Hah Great episode guys! I was born in 85 and missed the craziness you guys as kids had to deal w. Love hearing those stories.

Sean W. from Warsaw

I might have said this before, but I'll say it again: I sometimes get a little envious of all you original generation fans! I'm only 36. Even so, I got to see the Special Editions in the theater when I was in my early teens, and that was when they were having the new explosion of action figures and all that. It was a fun time to be alive! My dad, brother, some friends and myself all really got into the collecting scene in the mid to late 90s. Great stuff!

Brian Robinson

I also remember attending ESB in our General Cinema theater at the entrance of our mall that only had 2 screens. My Dad worked for Borg Warner and he would get discount movie tickets. Our whole family went this time. I remember acting out the scenes with my Sister on a tape recorder as we played the ESB board game in her room. I wish I had some of those old tape recordings. I saw the rerelease of ANH in our classic privately owned marquee theater that no longer exists with my oldest Sister a year later in 1981.

Eric from Phoenix this is Robert from Phoenix! We need to create a local RFR Chapter where we meet, drink beer, and call in to the after shows! In all seriousness I would love some info on the comic and collecter shops you went to and the big toy expo this month.

Uncle Ob1

Great episodes . Really enjoy Eric from Phoenix. Him and JMac are great together

Rob Strecker

My aunt had one of those little video things with some ghost cartoon on it.

Jason and Jimmy's SW experiences are enough to satisfy my appetite. Hearing new experiences from folks like Eric is like an unexpected dessert. 😀 🍨 🌟 ✨ 🚀

Ben P. Stein

Eric, I loved your story about how your Mom told you not to worry about missing the Star Wars Holiday Special the first time as it would be rerun! Jimmy, you mentioned the old toy as the Viewfinder--did you perhaps mean ViewMaster? Whatever the case, your discussion triggered a weird combination in my brain of that classic toy and Ochi of Bestoon's Sith wayfinder!

Eric from Phoenix

Dang, I wonder if we had the cartoon at the theater I saw it at? I have no memory of the cartoon.

Eric from Phoenix

That is cool Brian. The old school big theaters were awesome!! Would be fun to go back and see your "Adam Goldberg" videos :)

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks, glad you liked the episode! I had a ton of fun and the time went too quickly. My IG would be IG-48. Those from AZ know where that comes from ;)

Eric from Phoenix

Hey, you have tons of awesome stuff too. So many great memories waiting for the prequels, all of the awesome video games, figures getting released in 1995 and Star Wars Celebrations, etc. But I get it, the OT release and time period was unique and turned out to be perfect timing.

Eric from Phoenix

Jimmy mentioned the other properties that were made into the videos but I don't remember any of those. We only had the Star Wars one and I don't remember seeing them at the store. It's also been over 40+ years so maybe that's why I don't remember it :)

Eric from Phoenix

No one has ever called me dessert before ;) Tons of great content getting pushed out by JMac and all the VIPers are fun to listen to. Glad you enjoyed the discussion!

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks for all of the comments folks! I need to correct something I said (wife caught it when she listened). We met our two Star Wars buddies in 2005 at Celebration 3 not Celebration 5. Here are links to several of the items JMac and I discussed. I tried formatting it so it would look nice but it doesn't work on the Patreon site :( 1) Kenner Super 8 Movie viewer - The video shown is the one I still have. --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b77jR4wCtY 2) Toy R Us medals --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4C7svWMhfo Here is a link to Norse Legion (Kevin Leill's site). Jimmy was showing me his set of Joseph Campbell coins but I meant the medals. Looks like there is a sale that lasts until 8/20 if you put in YADDLE at checkout (15% off) --> https://norselegionstore.com/ 3) McQuarie concept art trailer for Empire --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYFNw6bgAb4 4) Harrison Ford narrated Empire trailer --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNwNXF9Y6kY I can totally see how a young Jimmy thought Chewie was in Vader's meditation chamber. Trailer goes from Chewie yelling in the detention cell and then cuts to Vader in his meditation chamber.

Eric from Phoenix

Glad you liked the story! It's so funny how we remember certain things and don't remember others. Why the heck would I remember my mom making that comment from 15 years earlier before I learned that the Holiday Special was real? I definitely think Jimmy was talking about the ViewMaster. I love how that morphed into the Sith Wayfinder. My brain works like that all of the time.

David Grunert

Great Q and A Eric and Jimmy thanks much appreciated

David Grunert

It was great being in lockdown RFR QnA is a great fix

Jeff Rysinski

Thanks Eric and Jimmy, great discussion. You made a long drive fly by. My first mail away figure was Nien Nunb in 83, not quite the same level of excitement as Fett.

Eric from Phoenix

Glad you liked it! Dang, I don’t remember that mail away figure. Definitely had him but didn’t do the mail away.

Matt Marks

Came here to ask Jimmy to post the Puppet Lando "pants" reading, but then got to the point in the episode where Jimmy said it was on YouTube in the same video with the Denny's menu. So of course I had to go find that video and watch it. Man, that was funny!

Brooks P

Eric my man great episode you did awesome.

Jeff Holland

Great episode! I too had the Star Wars viewfinder! I loved that thing. I loved watching it backwards and playing the explosions very slowly. Frame by frame. So cool you still have yours. Along with my figures, MF, etc it was one of my prized SW possessions (as a kid). No telling what happened to it - either my mom gave it away as a I got older or it ended up in some landfill.

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks, glad you liked it! I used to do the same thing with the video. Super slow motion and then backwards. It’s probably hard for people who weren’t around back then to understand. This was the only way to see the movie outside the theater :)

Jeff Holland

EXACTLY. Looking forward to your next VIP Q&A - those Kenner micro collection play sets were GREAT! I loved those too! I played with them so much the pewter figures were all scratched up. Note: I believe this is what you were referring to and not Star Wars micro machines. Either way, looking forward to it.

Eric from Phoenix

You are 100% correct. Micro collection not micro machines. I’ll be curious to see if JMac ever had them. I didn’t but remember seeing them in the store. Make sure to provide your experiences when the episode drops. Should have a good amount of action figure talk next time :)

Alex Doud

I am a little behind so just getting through this one. I also remember watching the Holiday Special live the one time it aired and trying to recall what it was like over the years. Then in the 90s I also picked up a bootleg VHS copy at the one of the ARC shows in Hillside that JMac mentioned. I don't remember the exact year but probably around the same time. Most likely from the same seller! I showed it to my kids a couple years back and I don't think we've even tried to watch it since. 😂. Great show as usual!

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks Alex! I’ve made a new tradition to watch The Holiday Special every Thanksgiving since that’s close to when it originally came out. I’ve got a two year streak going but I always have a couple beers while watching. It makes it easier to stomach :)
