Star Wars soap! Mini Rigs! Sears catalogs! RFR V.I.P. fan fave Eric from Phoenix is back for another round of the Q&A and we're talking new collectibles and acquisitions, vintage action figures, and playing with Star Wars toys as kids in the 70s. We also discuss being in the generation of kids who were the first to experience The Wars. Plus, a wacky story about IG-88's claw hands and Little League that will crack you up.

No chance this is anything but awesome!

Travis Brooks

I just finished listening to an episode of RFR from 2014 and mini rigs were in that conversation as well. Jimmy was trying to get Dave Filoni to have some made for Rebels!

Eric from Phoenix

We had so much fun playing with all those toys. I’ll get links posted to a bunch of the stuff we talked about for those that weren’t around or like me might have fuzzy memories :)

Amy Dudley

Tom Kane is fantastic!

DarthMosk

Hey if you haven’t gotten to Philly yet and wouldn’t mind me crashing, hit me up in the DMs or whatnot. Philly Star Wars fans represent.

Commander Bly

It was loads of fun taking a walk down toy memory lane! Great chat, fellas! I can distinctly recall my first Star Wars fig. I was in the basement and my Mom walked down the stairs with a large, brown paper bag in her hands. She reached in and pulled out a Greedo! I was fascinated by the aliens and was super excited about getting a Greedo. All the kids in the neighborhood had different Star Wars figs, vehicles, and play sets. I remember being jealous of the divorced kids, because they always had the biggest “collections”. In my kid’s mind, I was hoping MY parents would get divorced, so I could have a ton of toys, too. 😬 I always thought it weird how those kids never seemed to play with their hoard of cool toys. Probably because those toys meant something different to them. I’m sure they would have traded it all, and then some, to have dad back home. WOW! Talk about raining on a parade! 👎

Blake Weaver

Have fun down here in Florida on your trip Eric. I live a hour east of Disney world and I can say you picked a great time to come down. Crowds aren’t as bad.

RobO from ChicagO

I’m not a collector and even I enjoyed this episode

Super episode!

Peter Beisser

Great job as always, E from P. Loved the convo! And I'm glad to share that the man left Philly having ordered one Whiz, wit (a cheesesteak with Cheese Whiz and fried onions). Proud of him!

Peter Skinder

Thank you so much for making this episode. It was great to hear about all the toys I played with and desired growing up as a member of The Star Wars Generation! I did not remember where I got my survivor pack as a kid but I still have some of it. My Bespin Luke Skywalker figure wore his Yoda carrier pack for months! Great trip down memory lane. I will be holding on to my blue Snaggletooth till I die!

John Riley

Eric - WOW thank you for discussing the mail-away “accessory pack” for the ESB era action figures! Waiting for those things was agony for an 8-year-old. And that’s 40-year-old memories that you refreshed. Great episode!! 👍

Geoff Bartlett

We really need to start an online campaign to get Kanye on RFR. Who’s with me?

Eric from Phoenix

He is! I watched a documentary this past weekend called A Company of Heroes about the men of Easy Company during WW2 (Band of Brothers). Was a great documentary and filled in a ton of extra information that the HBO series either doesn't cover or expands upon it. As I was watching the credits I was surprised to see Tom Kane's name listed as the narrator. I totally missed that It was Tom. I'm normally great with voices but the documentary was so good that I didn't focus enough on the narrator.

Eric from Phoenix

I got to Philly and met up with Peter. Just absolutely a great dude. Bonus was I got to meet his lovely wife. Had a ton of fun at a great beer garden right on the river. Only talked Star Wars for probably 10 minutes. Hope to see them again!

Eric from Phoenix

Glad your parents didn't get divorced. What was your favorite figure from the Empire run? Did you have any of the micro-series toys?

Eric from Phoenix

Trip is getting closer. Not getting excited until we actually get there. Today was the first day Rise of the Resistance didn't have a virtual queue. When I looked at lunch my time the wait was only 50 minutes. Fingers crossed.

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks! Were you around for the original trilogy? Any feedback on what toys you loved from Empire?

Eric from Phoenix

Dude, so much fun meeting you! Thanks for the hospitality. Added bonus that I got to meet your lovely wife. We could've sat there and talked for another two hours. Hope to see you two again in the future. Maybe at ICCC?

Eric from Phoenix

The Survival Kit was just flat out awesome! Got items that never existed previously and extra weapons which were always helpful. My favorite item was the grappling hook belt. I never had the Blue Snaggletooth as a kid but picked him up in 1993ish at an antique store. Only paid $3.50 as they just thought it was a regular Snaggletooth. Thanks to the Insider Magazine I knew the difference. Mint condition :) What figures or play-sets were your favorites from Empire?

Eric from Phoenix

I wish you could've seen the video of Jimmy making the claw. Awesome! Not sure if his IG-88 claw at a baseball game or my bike Tauntaun was more nerdy :)

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks! I don't remember the wait for the Survival Pack as much as the wait for Boba Fett. What was your favorite figure and play-set from Empire?

Eric from Phoenix

Jimmy is trying to put it out into the universe as much as he can. Would actually be a great interview / discussion. Curious to know how he got into Star Wars and why ROTS is his favorite.

Eric from Phoenix

Okay, I'm way late posting the links to some of the stuff we discussed in the episode. 1) AZ Toy Con Facebook link -> https://www.facebook.com/arizonatoyshows/ 2) Dr. Squatch soap -> https://drsquatch.com/pages/star-wars 3) Great website to see full color pictures of the Vintage Kenner toys, includes some of the original Kenner toy commercials -> http://mrvintagestarwars.com/kenner-the-empire-strikes-back-action-figures-1980-1982/ 4) Survival Gear mail away -> https://swspaceclub.com/mailaways/survival-kit/ 5) Micro-collection articles -> #1 https://www.starwars.com/news/making-the-galaxy-smaller-inside-kenners-star-wars-micro-collection-part-1 #2 https://www.starwars.com/news/making-the-galaxy-smaller-inside-kenners-micro-collection-part-

Peter Skinder

Darth Vader’s Star Destroyer! I played with that so much! I wish it was sturdier though, mine fell off a table and landed upside down breaking the grey support for the roof. Lots of memories walking it around my house looking for that secret rebel base!

Nathan Wenzel

To early for me but I Remebered the micro machines!

John Riley

Eric - Hoth Han Solo and Tantaun (l loved the trap-door mechanism for mounting the action figure), or Snow Speeder. The rest were my Episode 4 action figures and X-wing, Tie, Land Speeder, and Millennium Falcon. It was all about the Falcon. For years as a kid I never liked Empire between Hoth and the Luke+Vader duel…my immature take on the film.

RobO from ChicagO

I’m a little younger than you Eric, I’m a prequel kid! I did have a bunch of action figures from the prequels and they have since been handed down to the younger kids in the family. I also had a Slave 1 and Y-Wing that was handed down to me from my dad.

Commander Bly

Thanks, Eric! 😄 My favorite fig is a toss-up between Boba & Yoda. Boba was JUST SO COOL! Yoda was neat, because he was so tiny and you could still move him around. Then, add that soft goods cloak, tiny belt, cane, AND snake?! Perfection. I didn’t own any of the micros, but friends did, so I got to play with some. Those were cool, because you could be master of a tiny universe that had cool play sets that take up a ton of space. The best part of all the toys was the endless possibility of creative play. Those are some of my fondest memories, really. When my boys were young, I got to revisit some of those old feels.

Peter Beisser

Ditto, Eric! Shows the power of RFR connecting fans across the planet. We've got some unaccounted for PTO next year, so Nashville may be a destination!

Eric from Phoenix

Awesome! We never had that playset. Wasn’t there a way to connect it to the Falcon or am I making that up?

Eric from Phoenix

Micro machines were awesome. Galob was awesome until they got bought by Hasbro. Once Hasbro bought them it seemed like they quit releasing the micro machine toys. I loved them as an adult.

Peter Skinder

I never had the falcon...made up for it though buying the galactic heroes falcon for my 4 year old son!

Eric from Phoenix

Did you have the split belly Tauntaun? We just had the regular one and had so much fun with it. I remember the reigns breaking easily? I think we got a Jawa stuck inside the Tauntauns. Maybe I’m making that up.

Eric from Phoenix

So cool that you dad passed down his toys. I can’t even imagine having access to all those Prequel toys as a kid. So many figures.

Eric from Phoenix

Awesome!!! Fett was my favorite too but technically I had him before Empire. Yoda was awesome too. Because he was small you got the extra accessories and soft goods. We never had the Dagobah playset but we had lots of wood blocks. Made all kinds of awesome hide outs and bases.

Eric from Phoenix

We never had the Falcon either. My mom and dad bought me a new Falcon in the early 2000’s for Christmas. Never took it out of the box so not like when I was a kid. I loved the Galactic Hero’s figures but my boys never got into them unfortunately.

Kurt Shimala

I have to admit, on a walk last night I made the IG -88 shadow claw.

Rob Strecker

I'm of the Prequel generation then. I didn't get into Star Wars until about 1997 or so, at the time of the special edition. I went to the theater for TPM and every release since, except the clone wars and solo, even a couple midnight showings.

Michael McManus

Great show guys! The mini rig conversation brings back memories for me. Definitely had a few of those growing up and I always wondered if they were really from Star Wars. LOL. They had lucasfilm written on the toy but we never saw them on screen so I was curious about that as a kid. Who could forget the toy catalog too! I would go through that thing cover to cover and make my Christmas wish list. Great memories. Thanks guys!!

John Riley

Regular belly. I never heard of the split belly until years later. That was probably a re-release after 1980? I’ll bet the Kenner designers just got clay models from Lucasfilm and never knew about the Luke-in-the-tauntaun scene until they saw the film, and then lost their minds!

Alex Doud

Oh the memories! This show took me way back. Card carrying member of the OG Star Wars Generation here and I remember all these great toys you were discussing. I am jealous of your Imperial Troop transport because I have the non-electronic version but I do have the vintage Slave 1! I have a lot of the mini rigs although missing some parts. I know we had the INT-4 but I cannot find that for the life of me and that was my favorite. I need to dig around my mom's basement a bit more. Hoping I find some unlabeled box with all my missing stuff. Still working on my displays. I have a room in the basement for my stuff to be on display. In the process of building a new bookshelf with a Star Wars theme to display more. I have to get to that Kane County toy show one of these days. Great show guys. Keep the great content coming!

Eric from Phoenix

Hahaha. After Jimmy mentioned it I've thought about it a ton. I posted a picture of an IG-88 toy doing the claw while I was at Galaxies Edge two weeks ago (Twitter).

Eric from Phoenix

You had sooooo many awesome toys to play with through the prequel films. The volume of action figures was crazy. What was your favorite action figure?

Eric from Phoenix

Glad you enjoyed the conversation! People who weren't around "back then" can't appreciate how awesome all those catalogs were. Only way to see all the toys that were going to come out in advance.

Eric from Phoenix

The electronic version of the troop transport was awesome. Really the only way we could get Star Wars sounds outside the story book records. The INT-4 was awesome and I'm jealous of your displays. I just haven't taken the time to do the work :). Glad you liked the show.

Marc Groundrunner

Great episode! Playing catch-up 😜. Totally agree that collecting is very challenging as of late. Especially when more 📦 🏬 exclusives are NOT discussed during the Hasbro panel videos. COLLECTING TIP: follow Yakface & Kylocollector on Instagram for pre-order times (plus they give links) 👍🏻 Lol on the soap 🧼 box, they keep advertising on IG at me 🤣

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks for listening! Great advise on collecting. I’m not on IG but Yackface is on Twitter so if I pay attention I’ll know about stuff. I have ordered a few things through Ent Earth and they let me know about the new Retro figure preorder so I did get in on those. I love the soap, didn’t know about it and a fun surprise gift.
