The original STAR TREK crew was made up of great characters which have stood the test of time. The chemistry between Kirk, Spock, Bones was on full display in STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME. Jason Swank and RFR V.I.P. Philip Ehlke are back to continue their chat about the Trek films featuring the original cast.

Oh boy here goes nothing! 🚀

Swank on Q and A!! Here's where the fun begins!

Philip Ehlke

Toward the end I accidentally say TNG when I meant to say “The Motion Picture.” My only fact-check for now!

Love these. Nice job, Phillip. Swank needs a spin off Trek cast. My wife and I just saw Shatner last week at New York Comic Con. He spoke about going up in space today. At 90, the guy still commands a room. And the most surreal experience I've had in recent years was going to the Monterey Bay Aquarium where they shot IV. Felt like being in the movie--minus George and Gracie.

I'm not a big Trek guy. I've only ever seen the first two films and parts of the old TNG show. But these conversations have spurred me on a little to want to see at least the original movie series. :)

Blake Weaver

Loved this conversation. Haven’t watched those trek movies in years but anything with that original cast will always be my favorite.

After listening. I watched Trek 4. It turns into a comedy when they go back to the late 1980’s.

Philip and Jason, thanks for this fantastic discussion! Even better than the last time--this was perhaps your "Wrath of Khan" episode, with so many spot-on insights and interesting stories. Three things I want to share: When I was taking paternity leave for my 6-week old son back in 2002 (I was so lucky to have that benefit back then), I rewatched the first six Star Trek films in the afternoons while he was napping on my lap. I remember finding the ST:TMP much improved with the new edit, and the viewing deepened my appreciation of ST6. (And perhaps not completely coincidentally, my son is now in film school at Florida State!) Second, I saw Star Trek 5 opening night in upstate NY (Binghamton) where I was spending the summer as an undergraduate researcher in a physics lab to see what the physics life would be like. It wasn't a very happy summer (the only other fun highlight was seeing Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe in Darien Lake, Buffalo), but that evening with ST5 was magical--I had the sense that everyone in the theater loved the film; I remember one local fan saying how "comedic" he thought it was (I agreed) and despite the film's flaws (which I did not see on that magical viewing) I thought the concept of Kirk outsmarting a "god" was the perfect setup for him. Third, a connection to Star Wars: on the RFR Facebook page, fellow fan Craig S. showed me this article pointing out that Star Trek II-IV were unplanned and an unplanned sequence of movies doesn't necessarily have to be bad: https://nerdist.com/article/star-trek-genesis-trilogy-no-plan-wrath-khan-search-for-spock-voyage-home/. Thanks for indulging me here and thanks even more for a superb episode!

Awesome discussion about all 6 original films. I enjoyed watching all of them including TMP. My favorites are 2, 3, 4, 6, 1, & 5. The "new Enterprise " in V & VI is renamed from the ship's original name of Saratoga.

Eric from Phoenix

Great job Phillip! I’m not a Trekkie but I definitely love Star Trek. I haven’t watched Star Trek 4 or 5 for years so it was fun hearing you guys talk about them. I agree with Jason, my favorite two original Trek movies are 2 and 6. I’ve always loved the assassination scene with zero gravity. Such a great concept and well executed in the film. Did Jason admit that he hasn’t see Galaxy Quest? How is that possible? Absolutely great movie and to me a love letter to Star Trek fans. There’s a great documentary about Galaxy Quest on Amazon Prime and the show is excellent. They feature some Cosplayers who after watching we realized we saw at Salt Lake Fan X in 2017. Crazy to see them featured in the documentary.

In the end, Kirk DOESN'T die alone. Picard is with him. In terms of the big 3, he was alone though.

Philip Ehlke

I’ve seen the Galaxy Quest doc! Great film which I saw in theaters long before I ever saw a Star Trek. Insane how well they captured the Kirk/Spock/crew dynamic while also poking fun at it 💯
