Whenever a new STAR WARS film is ramping up to release, fans always get teased with little glimpses and blurbs of info. RFR V.I.P. Eric from Phoenix is back to recount some of his earliest memories of RETURN OF THE JEDI. As part of those memories, Eric shows off a rare 1983 trade catalog from Kenner teasing the yet-to-be-released Ewok and Jabba action figures. We also discuss memories of seeing JEDI in the theaters that summer. Plus, some new collectible acquisitions, from STAR WARS books for kids, to the vintage line of Star Wars Marvel Comics from the 70s & 80s to the new Razor Crest from THE MANDALORIAN.

Great Q&A! Not going to lie, I'm really surprised Jimmy Mac didn't have the letterbox VHS until the THX release. I remember being 14 at my first job at a pizza place in the mall and would go down to the Suncoast video on my break and seeing the 1992 letterbox boxed set and wanting it so bad. The $120 price tag was well out of my range. Luckily, my parents got it for me for Christmas. It really did open my eyes to so many things I had been missing with the original VHS release of the trilogy. Most importantly, I finally got to see why my Amanaman was really a figure. After this set, I never bought any movie unless it was a letterbox edition. This Q&A brought back a lot of RotJ memories for me!

Sounds like this will be another awesome episode featuring Eric!

Eric from Phoenix

Don’t assume anything, it might not be that good :). In all seriousness, thanks for the kind words. Jump back on the forum and provide your thoughts and feedback after you listen.

somehow Eric has returned... Dark science, cloning...secrets only the sith knew...

Another great episode guys! Hah I love how I knew the answer to Eric's question for jmac about him reading empire before seeing it. I now dabble in RFRcanon 😂

Great Q&A! Awesome hearing your voice this episode, Eric. I always see your name pop up, but unlike Sheev, its always a good thing!

Just listening to this one right now. To answer Erics question, all of my 3 3/4" figures have a tiny amount of Elmer's blue poster tack under each foot. That way if I bump the shelf, no one falls down.

The man's memory of 40 years ago is WAY better than my recollections of just 40 minutes ago. Awesome conversation, Eric and JMac. Love the talk about those first non-pan and scan viewings. My first "letterbox" VHS was a true revelation, too.

I am a big fan of Eric from Phoenix! Always great!

The letterbox version was almost like I was seeing it for the first time!!! This chat brought back some great memories, as a kid (born in 86) Jedi was always my favorite. When the Ewoks get toasted on the battle of Endor it used to tear me apart. Love those little moments Lucas always added to make the galaxy so far away seem so real.

Really great discussion Eric and Jimmy, it got me feeling really nostalgic for the ROTJ. I just turned 8 went it was released so it was my first memories of anticipating a new SW movie. I had the Official Collectors Edition magazine, with Lukes's saber on the cover, before I saw the movie and was so excited about all the new characters, ships and environments. There is a full 2 page photo of Leia and Jabba face to face that really intrigued me, what the heck was this thing? Was it her friend? Her enemy? And what were they talking about!?!? Every detail in that magazine had my mind racing all over and wondering how everything would fit together in the movie. Ah ... great memories. Hey Jimmy, I loved that you played street hockey as a kid. I grew up in Canada so my whole childhood revolved around the wars and street hockey. Coincidentally my oilers are playing your hawks right now, all tied up at 2 in the first int. Thanks for sending me down memory lane boys!

Great Q&A. Happy to hear there is someone else out there that thought Vader was lying in ESB about being Luke’s father. Also, I never heard Yoda say “there is another Skywalker” when he was dying until the DVD release with subtitles.

Antonio from NJ

Haha Eric taking the hall pass to go "bully" his brother into giving him the rotj book almost sounds like a scene out of Ralphie's (from a Christmas story) life. Btw Eric you're comlink question was going to be the topic for my eventual QA! I've been wanting to ask those two the Yoda questionnaire for a while! Great stuff !

Rebel Force Radio

I spent entire summers in the street. I loved to play goalie. "Car!" I learned how to move that goalie net aside really quickly. BTW...Hawks win! Hawks win! :)

I was sorry to hear Jimmy lost his AirPods. I misplace mine at home all the time and wanted to share a solution. I got an Apple AirTag and then on Etsy I ordered an AirTag holder for the AirPod case. So now I can locate the case anywhere I leave them. That was great of Jimmy to return the ones he found and I hope he is able to get a new pair soon.

Jeff Rysinski

Ha Ha! "CAR!" is the universal language of street hockey players. Sigh. A penalty in OT gives the hawks the advantage for the win

Eric from Phoenix

It's funny how many things I remembered as I watched the original version of Jedi. I only remember stuff that isn't important :)

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks Joe! When are you going to make your way to Chicago for a Galloping Ghost visit? We need to find a time that ca bunch of Patreon folks can make it.

Eric from Phoenix

The letterbox versions were an eye opener. I was so blown away about all the tiny details that I never saw watching the old pan and scan versions. Really helped when we got a decent sized TV too.

Eric from Phoenix

The collectors magazine was what I was referring to in the discussion. I couldn't remember what it was called. Such a cool magazine and I'm glad I didn't read that before the movie like the Schoolastic storybook. Hockey really didn't exist when and where I grew up. I knew what it was but it was never on TV and there were no kids I knew that played it. We did play in the street but it was more with bikes. Such great times running wild through our small town. The rule was we had to be home when the town siren went off (6pm) or our mom/dad yelled to tell us to come in and eat.

Eric from Phoenix

Yep, I totally thought he was lying. He was the bad guy, he couldn't be Luke's dad :) Subtitles were also a huge eye opener for me. We watch almost every movie or Disney + series with them on. The worst are the British shows like Downton Abbey. Without closed captioning on we can't understand what they are saying. We saw the Downton Abbey in the theater and wished we could've had closed captioning on in the theater :)

Eric from Phoenix

Yep, going in and taking the book from my brother wasn't my finest moment. Sorry for stealing your question, it just seemed like something that would be fun for the guys to talk about. Not sure if they've answered the rest of the questions this week or not. You could always ask Jimmy the rest of the questions.

Jeff Rysinski

Yeah when you mentioned that magazine I remembered I had it and loved reading it as a kid. I hadn't looked at it in years but I still have it, so I opened it up to look through it, I need to spare some time to re-read it. There are so many great photos from the movie, behind the scenes and McQuarrie art. A couple years ago (just before the lock down) I went to Phoenix for the first time to watch a hockey game, my team was playing the Coyotes. Its crazy that a pro team is out in the desert but it was cool to go to a new arena to watch a game.

Eric from Phoenix

Yep, tons of Ralph McQuarrie art. Just like in the Empire movie magazine. I've never seen the hockey team play in person but we did go to a Trans Siberian Orchestra Christmas concert at the hockey arena. Talk about a hard to explain concert :)

Jeff Holland

As always enjoy EFP's Q&As. Loved the talk about revelations of watching SW non-Pan&Scan versions. Like in ESB - even though I saw it in the movie theater when it came out in '80 - but my 7-8 yr old mind was blown when seeing the Imperial Officer blow up (on the hologram) when Vader was talking to the officers. Vader didn't even flinch! Also, I have 2 kids <5, so I have the OBI-123 book and the other one - ABC-3PO. Both my kids love them.

Jeff Holland

And I believe Bossk can be seen on Jabba’s sail barge. If you pause the Disney Plus version at 31:25 you can see Bossk (or at least a Trandoshian that looks very similar to Bossk) to the left of 3PO.

Eric from Phoenix

Thanks Jeff! Yep, I think the officer getting killed is a classic moment. Cool that you have the kids books. They are very fun to read :)

Joshua Mertz

this dude sounds like mark hamill it’s crazy

Joshua Mertz

is this mark hamilll secretly??

Makes sense Dolly Parton would have a similar looking logo since the Lucasfilm logo is based on the look of cattle brands you’d find on Old West ranches (Like Skywalker Ranch)
