Many musicians from rap to rock have featured STAR WARS references in their lyrics. RFR V.I.P. Rob O from Chicago makes his Q&A debut and he brought tunes! Rob has a collection of STAR WARS references from a variety of bands, rappers, and musicians ranging from Tenacious D to Kayne West. Plus, we talk about the latest RFR Patreon Meetup and the STAR WARS hotel, Galactic Starcruiser.

Great ep! Can’t believe Jimmy didn’t say notorious BIGGS! Low hanging fruit Jimmy, low hanging fruit

Scott Armstrong

I love Galaxy's Edge, but I'm not sold on the Galactic Starcruiser yet.

Antonio from NJ

Yeah, ok rob o you are my people...starting it off with the beastie boys! I love it hah great job

RobO from ChicagO

Thank you! We had it in the que, but didn’t get around to it. We went on a couple different tangents!

Antonio from NJ

the beasties are my band the way led is to jmac. They are really diverse too. Theyve done rap, punk, rock and have a full jazz instrumental album. And a heads up the beastie boys autobiography on audible is read by Mike D and AdRock!

Antonio from NJ

Yo you are throwing spotlight on some great rap here!

Carlos Ortega

Stormtrooper by Pepper (I’ve been meaning to plug this into a show or send an email) but here ya go!

Adam Taylor

Great Q&A debut! Really enjoyed the show, I’m primarily a heavy, classic, hair, Rock guy but I followed a lot of rap/hip hop as part of the Skateboard community for decades. Great show. One classic with a Star Wars lyric I love is “B-Boy Document 99” by the high and mighty from 1999, with a Rare Mace Windu name drop lol, check it out 😆 (verse 3) https://youtu.be/21uOvcK__M0

Great Q&A - we can definitely take the longer shows. Another band with a few Star Wars references are Northern Irish pop-punk band Ash - my all time favourite band. Their first full album was called ‘1977’ and the first track ‘Lose Control’ starts with the sound of a TIE-fighter. Another track on the album is called Darkside/Lightside. One of their b-sides is a cover version of ‘cantina band’ and they also have a songs called ‘It’s A Trap’ and one called ‘Clones’ that was used on the soundtrack for the game ‘Republic Commando’. Bass player Mark Hamilton is also reputed to have one of the best vintage Star Wars collections in the country. Many of their other tracks are also pop culture influenced - ‘Goldfinger’, ‘Angel Interceptor’, ‘Kung Fu’, Evel Knievel’, ‘Hulk Hogan Bubble Bath’.

Antonio from NJ

Man it's funny how much rap loves star wars...lots of people referencing attack of the clones as a way to diss copy cat acts, or people biting styles. And one of the best star wars reference (or in this case a full song) is blink 182's A New Hope from their amazing Dude Ranch album (before the blew up, or rather the album before they did). It's a great pop punk song and clearly written by fans. https://youtu.be/jCjUZFI6gLs

RobO from ChicagO

We had it ready to play, but got pulled in different directions with our convos. I do enjoy the song, Blink was very big when I was growing up.

Tyler Page

Loved this episode. So many songs with Star Wars references you could go on forever! Can’t wait to go to a Sox game with ya Rob!

Diana Orr

Well put together segment Rob for your first Q&A. I really enjoyed this episode. Jimmy Mac great job as always. I hope the force brings RFR and YE together for an episode.

Antonio from NJ

Oh man, ash had some really good songs! 1977 and Free All Angels were solid albums. Brb need to listen to Shining Light real quick. Thank you for this random memory ping!

Antonio from NJ

Man, Gareth you've really got me on the Ash reference! They also had a great song called 'A Life Less Ordinary', the title track for the movie, 'A Life Less Ordinary' (killer soundtrack), a Dany Boyle film featuring none other than Ewan McGregor as the lead actor!

Dominique Garant

About Obiwan Kenobi référence: The Hip Hop group (but back then we called it rap) Lords of the Underground shot him a line in the song Psycho, from their 1993 album Here Comes the Lords. At the 30 sec mark: « my Force is strong, like Obiwan Kenobi ». It’s on Spotify.

Clare Galloro

Rob, John Wayne Gacy did not live in Des Plaines. He lived in Norwood Park. The Des Plaines police were the ones who solved the case. Great Q&A.

Jeff from Valpo

Great debut episode Rob! Loved it! Glad we had a chance to talk at the last Ghost meetup, hope they do it again this summer. Go Sox!

Peter Beisser

Fun stuff, Rob! Echoing folks above, but a really awesome structure for the chat! Can't wait to hear your next one.

Brian Robinson

One of the most famous uses of Led Zeppelin music in a movie was in "Fast Times At Ridgemont High". Ratner put in "Kashmir" when he picked up Stacy for the first time. Damone told him as part of the five point plan with chicks, "And five, now this is the most important, Rat. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV. " Although, "Kashmir" is on Physical Graffiti - Doh! LOL

Todd “Suds” Sedlacek

Great job Rob! I really enjoyed the episode and connecting SW to popular music. Goes to my usual statement that SW is everywhere!

Brian Robinson

I hope the "Chewbacca" song by the band Supernova is in this podcast, from the "Clerks" soundtrack.

Dominic Paruta

Thanks RobO and Jimmy! Loved this episode and loved hearing Jimmy Mac’s rock DJ voice lol! Great music! Been listening to Californiacation since it dropped and never caught the Alderan reference. You guys gave me new appreciation of songs I’ve long loved; just like RFR gives me new ways to appreciate and love The Wars 40 years later! Happy early St Patrick’s Day Jimmy and all! ☘️

Joe Dallas

Ha ha! Shout out - diggin the bass line!! Yep! I got Chili Pepper Tickets for Miami in August. Cool show man.

RobO from ChicagO

Jealous! I really want to go when they come to Chicago, just gotta convince myself the price is worth it.

Dominic Paruta

I think we need a chapter 2 in this format!

Eric Scheumann

just catching up on the show and Jimmy Mac referenced the tweet I sent him of Kanye!!!👊👊😁

Eric from Phoenix

Great job Rob O! Awesome conversation and a ton of fun. I was only familiar with one of the Star Wars references (Queen). We’re big school of Rock and Nacho Libre fans on loved the Jack Black song. Classic!! Also, Swank was in a band and can sing? JMac, Billie and Swank need to play some songs at the rooftop bash.

Jim from Sweden

Welcome to the VIPs Rob O from Chicago! Great episode - fun topic, too! One of my fav bands - Clutch (hard rock/heavy metal band from Maryland) has a SW reference in one of their songs. Off their 2nd studio album, self titled "Clutch" (came out in 1995). The song "Big News II" has this: Can't funk with the feel or with the other three This mother lode coming at you all three D's We got big news, the party boat is here The band is kicking, and I see lots of beers And I believe there is gambling On the deck just below from here We got Greedo, Solo to the rear They know the deal, sacks packed and stacked with Pieces of eight, a sailor's life for me Live free or die Never look a bounty hunter in the eye, damn! Always liked that SW reference. Great song too! PS - don't you just love those JMac Star Wars tangents?!?! Nothing wrong with them. Ha! And I'm in the camp that LOVES long podcasts. Love when Swank and JMac do a 2+ hour podcast.

Hey guys, might be late to this but I have to add in Kanye’s BEST Star Wars reference in his song “nah nah nah” that came out amidst his ROTS rants he says “I KNOW YOU THINK OBI WAN GETTIN TIRED NOW… DONT JUMP ANAKIN I GOT THE HIGHER GROUND!”

Jim from Sweden

Oh Yes! And I can give "information" on the missing songs only on non streaming sources if someone collecting is interested.

Jim from Sweden

The song is referred to as "Kanye Wests deleted song" i a podcast. And only the instrumental version is available on Spotify. What's the story there? Was it "offensive" to someone? ;)

Jim from Sweden

Ah, found it: "On October 14, 2020, Kanye West shared on Twitter a snippet of a song titled "Nah Nah Nah". The clip featured footage of Joaquin Buckley's knockout victory at UFC Fight Island 5 and Star Wars. The song was released after a series of tweets from West celebrating presidential polling results in Kentucky, which later turned out to be fake." (source: Wikipedia)

Jason zurheide

Hi Jim. The song itself is not offensive, but rather another rapper that is featured on it ‘DaBaby’ made offensive lgbtq comments during a concert of his own; so it’s speculated Kanye West pulled the song from streaming right before he released his album Donda. There is no official reason for it not being pulled from streaming unfortunately. The song is still available on YouTube with over 1 million views however.

Jim from Sweden

Yeah, I watched it. I never saw so much twerking before. I'm more of a 80s east coast fan of hip hop.
