The Darth Bane trilogy of novels by Drew Karpyshyn explores the rise of one of the baddest ancient villains in STAR WARS history and the establishment of the Sith rule of two. RFR V.I.P. Todd Sedlecek makes his RFR debut to review the first novel of the series, Darth Bane: Path of Destruction. Plus, STAR WARS in Grey's Anatomy, and the story of Jimmy Mac and the Lost Holocron.

You absolutely killed it on your first time out, Todd. I normally don't do the books, but I was really entertained. You know your stuff! 🙌

David Fieldsend

Darth Bane trilogy is one of my favorite series of all the star wars books, and i enjoyed the discussion! The point you made about the gradual building up of Banes force powers was interesting

Todd “Suds” Sedlacek

Thanks! Yeah, the buildup of his Force powers is one of the things I found intriguing about his backstory. Especially the point at which he realized his first overt use of the Dark Side was way back when he killed his father simply by wishing it to happen. To me, it really showed his true potential that he was able to kill with a mere thought as an untrained Force user.

Oh man! Loved this book! Never got around to reading the other two, so this might motivate me. Man, Jimmy's pumping these things out too fast! Can't keep up. I feel like I'm in a marathon race or something! But can't wait to listen, man!

David Fieldsend

Yeah, i agree. Granted its been a few years since I read them, so I appreciated the re-cap. I also remember the scene where Zannah eviscerated her cousin's arm with just her mind and her force powers, it was haunting!

Pete Bowers

I love the Darth Babe trilogy. Them and the Darth Plagueis novel are probably the ones I read the most. Thanks for bringing it to RFR Todd.

Todd “Suds” Sedlacek

Thanks! I’m the same - this trilogy and the Plagueis novel are the ones I revisit the most. Sith are so much more interesting to read about for me. Not sure what that says about my mindset though LOL.

David Kipke

Wow I am just THRILLED to see more Darth Bane content!! I find myself going back thru the archives occasionally to find Bane and Plageuis audio content.. Great, great stuff guys. Would love if Todd came back and did the rest of the Darth Bane trilogy books in future Q&As...

Todd “Suds” Sedlacek

Thanks! Darth Bane is one of my favorite EU characters. His actions are the basis for so much that came after him in the saga so it was interesting to see his origin explored. I will be back for the rest of the trilogy with Rule of Two up next. Currently re-reading that book and organizing my thoughts on how I want to go about recapping that story. Stay tuned!

Man, I was so nervous my first episode.... Unfortunately, while it's gotten a lot better since, I've never been able to fully shake the jitters even after doing 10 episodes! Any other Q&A hosts feel the same way, out of curiosity? Or is it just me?

Sean W. from Warsaw

Huh. I do remember this a bit, but I always took it to be him reading into the death of his father as a way of justifying his own power. Interesting!

Sean W. from Warsaw

While I've only read these books once years ago, they always left a strong impression on me, so that I can still remember many details about them. I think it's due in large part to the quality of writing. Luceno and Karpyshyn have a way with telling stories that matter. Karpyshyn wrote the first KOTOR game (can't remember for sure if he wrote the others), as well as that Revan novel, and all of them were phenomenal. Wish they'd bring him back....

So there was this really interesting story about Bane in a short-lived Star Wars RPG magazine years ago (I think it was called Star Wars Gamer or something). It tells the story of how he got this crazy armor that was a living creature of some sort that had a thick hide that couldn't be destroyed, even by a lightsaber--but it fed off his life force until it killed him. Do they cover that at all in the other Bane books...?

David Fieldsend

Yeah, in the second book. The way its written in the novel makes it seem way less absurd and laughable than it sounds though. And there are a lot of examples of force sensitive and force using beasts in other Star Wars canon and EU stuff, from the ysalamiri back when to the Drengir and Leveler of recent stuff. You should read or listen to it, and the third! And without spoiling anything, some of your facts there are inaccurate...

Antonio from NJ

@jmac we've got to get you do a Kotor playthru

Sean W. from Warsaw

Yeah, I remember the short story I read making it really dark and cool with those weird creatures growing on him. So that's cool they picked that up! One of the things I was always a little bummed about with the Clone Wars iteration of Bane was that he didn't have that carapace armor, but rather actual armor. Both iterations are cool, though. And yeah, Force animals and all that are all through Star Wars, even going into the old Tales of the Jedi comics with Master Thonn, who was like this dinosaur with four legs that let people ride him but was a Jedi master. Great stuff!

Mitchell Sparks

Love this one. It's fun to hear the analysis from someone who has only read the first book. Looking forward to part 2 and part 3 when Jimmy gets caught up!

Sean W. from Warsaw

So I only just started listening. I hope you don't take this as anything other than a compliment, but has anyone ever told you that you sound like Adam Driver...? Lol I feel like I'm listening to convo between Jimmy Mac and Kylo Ren!

Todd “Suds” Sedlacek

Hahaha….that’s funny! No, that’s a first for me but I’ll take it! I did think I sounded a bit monotone with not a lot of inflection so it fits I suppose 😊. Thanks!!

Craig Wehr

Really great episode. I really want to get 2 more episodes of you guys reviewing the next 2 books. Other than Pleguis, the Darth Bane trilogy are my next favorite novels. I dream of that story told on D+ or big screen.

Todd “Suds” Sedlacek

Thanks! Don’t worry….we are going to do the whole trilogy and I agree - next to Plagueis, these have been my favorite SW novels.

Joe Dallas

Nice job- I think I’ll listen to the audible “Rule Of Two” now so I’m ready to hear your next discussion.

RobO from ChicagO

Never read the book, but enjoyed the episode/discussion!

GB7

I have recently read this trilogy, so the timing is perfect for me. What a super recap by you both. Great effort Todd! 👏🏼

Rob Strecker

Can't wait to hear the discussion on the sequel books. Those fights really are best seen in the mind. i.e. in one of the next books he's using the saber to keep himself dry in the rain. Moving so fast he's catching every drop Can only imagine what that looks like.

Lizi Gregory

one of my favorite trilogies! loved this discussion and can’t wait for the next 😄

Todd “Suds” Sedlacek

That scene with Bane keeping himself dry while doing lightsaber exercises is in the last book, Dynasty of Evil. I agree - that’s an awesome scene as written. Thanks for listening!

Alex White

When it comes to the novels, I find myself not much of a reader like Swank. However, this series sounds as if it has substance comparable to that of the Plagueis novel that I’m currently in the midst of reading. I look forward to the next conversation. Maybe one day I’ll read the series if I’m up to it.

Randy Koch

I literally obsess over these novels they to me are the base of the Star Wars skywalker saga and rule of two i.e. one of these books
