Fandom is filled with different perspectives of STAR WARS, especially considering when a fan discovers the franchise. The Original STAR WARS Generation has memories of when the film burst on the scene in 1977, but fans in the 90s cannot remember life without The Wars. RFR V.I.P. Thomas was born in the early 90s and he recalls his introduction to The Saga via the Special Editions and Prequels. He and Jimmy Mac, an old school fan from the 70s, compare notes and share experiences which opens up into a wide-ranging conversation about all-things STAR WARS. Plus, LEGO STAR WARS; THE SKYWALKER SAGA, Broom Boy and more!

As someone who was born in 2001, I can't wait to listen to this! I was raised on the original trilogy, and then saw the prequels around 10-12 years old, and of course have been part of the fandom through the whole Disney era. I actually can't remember the first time I saw a Star War! I remember the first time I saw revenge and everything Disney, but nothing before that. Thanks dad for making me as excited for every addition to star wars, as you were to see Empire!

Great episode, Thomas! I’m a SE kid, too, so I enjoyed hearing your comments about 90s era Wars and TPM. Also, enjoyed hearing the convo about the sequel trilogy. I hope we get more episodes from you. MTFBWY

Lots of good gaming talk and great to hear from a fellow PT fan! I’ve been playing this game called Tiny Tina’s which is 1/2 RPG 1/2 First Person Shooter - would be a great format for KOTOR imo.

I was born in 1975 and had parents who were nice enough to introduce Star Wars to me at a very early age. Movies, toys, bed sheets, lunch box, etc. I definitely do not remember a time before Star Wars!

Great stuff, I'm also a SE kid as well, first time I saw the films at the cinema, then became a hardcore fan after the prequels.... I remember being about 14 and trying to convince my parents that the Phantom Menance would be the best film ever! Lol

That Krayt dragon Mando episode isn’t just my favorite episode of the show but might be my favorite SW thing PERIOD to rewatch at the moment. I can just watch it over and over! Also I like that idea you had that maybe it’s a lower evolution? Like how the Xenomorphs have different forms!

I agree and disagree about Jedi needing to be trained and not anybody can use the Force. Anakin and Rey are not trained formally, but their force abilities are innate because of their connection to the force. Anakin is racing Pods and training those reflexes like a muscle and Rey is scavenging alone like a survivalist almost, we see her hoping around those massive wrecks that would kill a normal person but she’s alone and honing her abilities unconsciously. Then you also have to account for the “Will of the force” which has a conscious effect on these characters destinies…

Thomas really enjoyed your convo with jimmy. I was born in 1989 and my brother in 92’ so our history with The Wars is just like yours. I really liked the part of the convo about people actually having to have training to use the force in certain ways. That’s the one thing that drove me nuts about Rey using mine tricks in TFA on the trooper when she’s captive. I get she’s a Palpatine but that crossed the line as far as her being able to use powers she’s never heard of that aren’t based on instincts. Can’t wait to hear you again on Q&A my dude!

Great podcast. Thank you Thomas and Jimmy. Interesting talk about the 20 year cycle of nostalgia. I agree with Thomas, a sequel in 10 years feels like the right timing.

That is definitely something worth thinking about. Not enough attention given to that in the films, as I see it. It makes me wonder all the more about how Luke grew to become a Jedi without formal training. My assumption has always been that he did it mostly through trial and error while in the war. This seems to make the most sense. Due to his natural aptitude, he grew fairly fast over the years.

The whole Rey thing has always driven me crazy, too! But, while I'm very back and forth on this explanation, I think the one from the novels makes some sense: That she shared Kylo's training when he used the Force to connect one another's minds in TFA. I think it's a bit of a cheat, to say the least, but it also seems kinda interesting at the same time in large part because we never saw anything like that before. My guess is it also was amplified by them being a dyad. It works...yet at the same time I think it takes too much away from the storytelling potential for the character. She feels too much like Super Jedi than a girl growing in the Force. I think her journey could have been more interesting and believable for a number of reasons, but the main one is if she didn't beat Kylo until the last movie. Having her beat him in TFA, sort of do so in TLJ, and then do it again in TROS is too much, whatever the reasoning behind it is. It just violates basic rules of good storytelling, and kills Kylo as a competent villain in the process. I could never buy that Rey was in any danger from him or that he posed a threat to her.

Great first episode, Thomas! Always a fun conversation talking about how our perspectives change over the years. Like you, I grew up in the mid 90s on the Special Editions, so they and the prequels had a big impact on me. Thanks for sharing!

Ah gosh I know the novelization would answer a lot ( even though I’ve already heard the RFR spoiler talk on it ) but I just can’t get myself to read it. I’m at the point in my relationship with the sequels where I know it’s there but I don’t care enough to justify even small things. This really hit home with me playing Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga. Freaking AMAZING game I’m loving but even the genius of Lego couldn’t save playing through the sequels for me. I’m a lost cause :D

Great first Q&A! Really enjoyed the conversation and that it’s spanned so much of the story. And it’a always nice to hear about fellow “Phantom Menace is my favorite” fans!!

Eric from Phoenix

Great discussion! I don't think the midichlorians ruined the force but wish George would've just left it that Anakin was unusually strong in the force. So much so that Qui-Gon sensed it. I didn't need more details than that. Also, there were two examples of symbiotic relationships in the Phantom Menace which was probably one too many.

Mike James

Well done Thomas 👏🏻 great discussion!
