Emerging from Hyperspace, The RFR Early Bird is here to bring you the latest episode of RFR FIRST!

With OBI-WAN KENOBI on the horizon, STAR WARS dominates the latest cover of Vanity Fair magazine. We provide a critical (and a bit cynical) analysis of the entire article including the extended Kathleen Kennedy interview posted online along with new info about ANDOR, AHSOKA, THE MANDALORIAN, THE ACOLYTE and the future of STAR WARS on the silver screen. We have press highlights from Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen. Could there be a Darth Vader film or streaming series on the horizon? Will there ever be a film villain to match the popularity of Darth Vader? We discuss the possibilities. Plus, we review the food and drink menu for The RFR Rooftop Bash and more!

I know its said people didn't like the prequels. In my observation, people individually loved it. The first 6 months as a group people complained. Then with in two years the only thing people said about the prequels was the dialog was off. When Jimmy says the sequels will gain a similar appreciation; maybe only the kids who this was their first Star Wars. I think the sequels are to disconnected. Unless something much closer to that time line (not mando) is told it will be too disconnected. Especially when we have Kathleen coming out saying she needs to get away from the skywalker saga. Sorry for the long rant.

Bianca from Michigan

Wonderful timing! Great way to start my last day of work for the week! 🍻

RobO from ChicagO

I like how Kathleen Kennedy says they are moving past the Skywalker saga, when Luke was included in both Mandalorian AND Book of Boba.

Rebel Force Radio

Since you bring up my name I want to clarify….I said Sequel nostalgia is something Lucasfilm might be banking on in the future…Its not my opinion that it will actually happen because I don’t think kids connected with it like the Prequel era fans.

Antonio from NJ

Is the Skywalker saga how Anakin and Luke took out Palps? Or is it the story of how the Skywalker bloodline has been haunted by Palps?

Nicinus

Personally I think it is a matter of volume. The kids that connected with the prequels primarily did so via Clone Wars, which peaked interest in the larger story around it. More stories around Rey, Finn and Poe would have similar effect.

Peter Fontana

Love, hate, or meh Solo. But... Now that we have it, do "the vast majority of fans" really never want to see MORE adventures of a younger Han Solo, Chewie, and Lando? Given how fraught production was on Solo, what if someone could take it in an improved direction, even a less risky series instead of a movie? I just don't get pulling the plug entirely because the Solo we got *only* made a half billion dollars and the apparent KK leap that recasting doesn't work. Perhaps this is where the Lando series goes. And I imagine there's a lot of fans who'd like to see the bounty hunters in their prime, Maul's criminal empire, or EU threads via Tales from Jabba's Palace. There's a lot of potential here, and I can't imagine even Solo haters think the film or Alden's portrayal killed it entirely. (Yes, I happen to generally like the film and Alden's impossible task portraying.)

Peter Fontana

Seems crazy to axe the idea of recasting with one attempt, given all the issues Solo had. Better to optimize than kill off the potential for more stories with our favorite characters. For once I am with Jason over Jimmy on a topic!

Nicinus

I would say the latter. Like The Godfather more than anything it is a generational family drama that started in the middle. (And I wish Johnson had kept it such).

Kurt Shimala

Exactly my thoughts the first time I saw Solo. I was all excited for where it’s going next (similar to TFA), only to be disappointed it was one and done. This was due to a plethora of reasons…and those reasons go right up to the top (KK). Side note: I finally saw The Batman, and as much has been made out of its “darkness” I had no trouble seeing everything on screen, which I still can’t say about Solo!

Blake Weaver

Really good discussion breaking down the news. I like how Jason and jimmy have differences in opinions on some topics because with all the wackiness with Lucasfilm I fall right in the middle opinion wise sometimes with their thoughts. I think the most important things we got was just release windows and a sense of focus story wise they know they need to have now. They’ll NEVER come out and say where they really messed up like with TLJ so what’s in the article to me seemed as genuine as it could be given where it’s coming from.

Rav Vadgama

Am I the only one who feels K2SO not being in the first series of Andor is a deal breaker? Also, Gareth Edwards not being involved doesn't sit right with me.

Ben P. Stein

Great analysis of the Vanity Fair content. I really appreciated the wisdom and insights from Jimmy and Jason and how they draw not only upon their Star Wars knowledge but also their life and work experiences to make a lot of perceptive observations on the interviews and quotes.

Scott Osterkamp

I was the guy yelling at the speaker “it’s Jedha”. Respect JMac opinions on KK, but side with Swank. She’s covering her rear and knows she made HUGE mistakes.

Jeff LeCrone

Jason, for all his experience in media, ought to know better than to over-dissect interviews. KK was not asked ‘What went wrong with Solo?” The question was “Did the casting of Solo teach you a lesson?” So to make the accusations Jason makes here, particularly criticizing her for not giving answers to questions she wasn’t asked, is a bit overboard. Look, I’m not a huge fan of KK, but I don’t think she is being treated fairly here.

Peter Beisser

"Solo." Disappointing. "Solo in Ohio." Amazing. Great deep discussion. Breznican asked perfect questions in that story. Knows what he's doing. Surprised how much the guys got lit up by it all. Got me through my yard work. Looking forward to next week and Obi.

GMo

Fantastic episode! I liked the Filoni Favreau breakdown and the KK quotes but you forgot to mention it was George that was showing off TCW to Favreau. Filoni seems like a pretty down to earth guy I can’t picture him just walking up to Jon and saying “hey check this out!” George introduced the two of them. There’s a bonus feature on TCW season 2 BluRay that comes to mind when Jon talks about how he got involved. I’m not sure Favreau would have done that and given Dave his personal cell right away.

Randy Koch

It was foolish of them to go and say K2SO it's not in the 1st season I think we'll find that he is found and then rebuilt by cassian Andor. Remember everything is an orgin story. Hollyweird doesn't know how to do it any other way.

Trevor Hallam

Jimmy saying that the only people who like Solo are hardcore fans is just plain wrong lol. Sorry man but it’s just not true and I lean more to what Jason thinks (off the heels of TLJ etc). My entire family (wife, parents, and in laws) is meh for Star Wars, I’m the only one who is a hardcore fan. Every one of them enjoyed Solo and my wife even watched it twice which is super rare for her to do. Sorry just throwing those two cents in.

Kyle Starkel

Five years on I am still confused about the idea that TLJ was somehow a complete 180 from the rest of the franchise. If you really sit down and analyze the film it's basically just a remix of Empire Strikes Back. The First Order (Empire) is seemingly unaffected by the giant defeat they just suffered (Starkiller/Death Star) and is on the attack. They find the location of the Resistance (Rebel) base. Our heroes barely escape but are being tracked. In Empire Boba Fett tracks them, in TLJ it's the hyperspace tracking technology. Our heroes are separated in both movies. Yes, in Empire there are a few lines of dialogue between Luke, Han and Chewie before they diverge. That was not an option for TLJ because the end of Force Awakens shows Rey arriving on Achto. Rey (Luke) goes off to find Jedi master Luke Skywalker (Yoda) to help the resistance/train her. Luke (Yoda) is reluctant to train her (Luke). After some convincing Luke (Yoda) decides to train her. They both cut their training short in the end because they want to save their friends. Rey (Luke) runs off to confront an opponent she is not ready to fight, Kylo Ren/Snoke (Vader). They both suffer defeat and disappointment and learn a truth that shakes their entire world. Rey learns that her parents abandoned her and Luke learns that the villain he's fighting is actually his father. Yada yada yada, a kind of downer movie ends with a little bit of hope. Rey reconnects with Finn, meets Poe and gets words of encouragement from Leia. Luke gets a new hand and the plan to rescue Han is formed. People on both sides sound crazy about this movie. It isn't some earth shattering rejuvenation of the franchise anymore than it is some childhood destroying divergence.

Jeff Holland

Gonna have to agree 100% with Jason’s take on KK, etc. I like KK and everything the Marshall/Kennedy producing team has touched, but Jason is right (IMHO) she took no ownership on Solo’s failures. But I digress…

Eric from Phoenix

Couldn't agree more, overall I loved the movie. Not perfect and there were things that didn't work (L3) but overall I wanted to see more of the characters. Seems like it would be perfect series for Disney+. Could they get Harrison back and de-age him?

Eric from Phoenix

Great discussion guys. I think one of the challenges the sequel movies had was they introduced too many characters. This can be done but you have to have a plan and have great writing (Avengers as an example). Rian could be a great guy and I loved Knives Out but he failed with his Star Wars movie.
