STAR WARS video games have been around since the early 80's and at the forefront of gaming since then. RFR V.I.P. Rob O from Chicago has a list from Game Informer, released last year, that ranks the top 30 all-time STAR WARS video games, as chosen by their experts. We review the list and weigh in with our opinions, gripes, stories and experiences. Find out what made the list and what didn't!

Ooh! Great topic. Can’t wait to hear this one

Peter Beisser

The original 1983 Atari Star Wars arcade game got robbed on that list you used! Loved that one. Great conversation. Really enjoying it, Rob.

Eric from Phoenix

Couldn’t agree more. The Atari sit down version of the game was as close to being in Star Wars a kid could get back when it came out. I was blown away by the game when I encountered it at Showbiz Pizza.

Michael McManus

Great show guys! A few that didn’t get mentioned on that list were Star Wars: Obi-Wan for the original XBOX. He is my favorite character and to have a whole game around him was awesome. The voice over for him though in this was so bad! LOL. Star Wars: Bounty Hunter for GameCube was another of my favorites. Playing as Jango Fett and having that side story on him and his history was awesome! And lastly The Star Wars Trilogy Arcade game from Sega. I spent countless amounts of money on this in the arcade or anywhere it was available. Loved how you could play specific battles from each trilogy as well as saber dueling with Vader and Boba Fett! Great topic for a show Rob!

The V-Wing was used by the Republic and later the Early Empire. We saw them more recently in the Bad Batch.

One lesser known game I loved was the DS version of Episode 3. I think it's so underrated!

Fettmatic

Super SW has the choices to pick between Luke, Han & Chewie too. You can pick Han once you reach Mos Eisley. Once you are Han, then you can be Chewie after reaching the Cantina. I played all 3 Super SW games & ESB is my favorite. RCs group in the game is called Delta Squad. I remember playing SW Jedi Starfighter for PS2. I really enjoyed that game. I have 100% every SW Lego games. SW Bounty Hunter is one of my favorite games & not on the list. SW RS II: Roger Leader is that game on GCN. One my favorite figure series were TAC.

Just heard tonight jedi survivor been put back 7 weeks to something like April 28th. We just completed jedi gallen order again to prepare for it and are currently doing jedi unleashed. Nothing like playing a Xbox 360 game on an Xbox series x. Look forward to listening to this release but have to save it for the weekend as the boy who only normally wants to listen to the after shows and weekly shows has asked to listen to this. The only other q and a he wanted to listen to was the lightsaber duel one

RobO from ChicagO

Blah how could I forget the Jango Fett game! It was awesome collecting bounties on the skyscrapers of Corusant!

Antonio from NJ

Dang, so much of this episode was my childhood - starting with Tie Fighter haha. I was in 4th grade in 1994 and Star Wars video games were everything to 9 yr old me. Dark Forces/JK series, KOTOR series, Tie fighter, Rebel Assaults, Battlefront OG, Force Unleashed, Shadows and Super SWs..man that was the life hah. Heck all of those Lucas Arts games are a lot of fun. Thank you for another awesome episode guys! edit - geez '94-'05 was some really amazing years for all things star wars.

Antonio from NJ

Hah when we got our first PC in 94 my father naively bought me Doom. Well that lasted about a year until he saw what was what haha. yeah it got replaced quickly w Dark Forces. And I know it's a lot but we've got to get JMac to play KOTOR. It is absolutely the best SW game and one of my favorite SW stories of all time. Maybe we can do like just certain big beats over a handful of episodes?

Eric from Phoenix

My boys loved this game and used to play it all the time on our GameCube. It was The Mandalorian at the beginning of the series :)

RobO from ChicagO

You uploaded this fast Jimmy! Thanks for the feedback folks! Felt like Jimmy was carrying the conversation alot with the classic games! And I have to correct myself I HAVE played Shadow of the Empire, I remember fighting the Wampas in echo base!

RobO from ChicagO

Id love to do a KOTOR Q&A, especially since there’s been a lot of references to the game in more recent live action content.

Ben P. Stein

I enjoyed your discussion! I'm a big KOTOR fan as well. I think Game Informer at one time was one of the top magazines in terms of circulation numbers, since it was given away for free at Gamestop (I don't believe this is the case anymore). For such a major publication/outlet, their list didn't seem to be comprehensive and it felt a little skewed to the nostalgia of whoever put it together.

Devin Clancy

X-wing Alliance is great. You can fly YT-1300 freighters. It's still being updated today with new fan-made graphics and gameplay.

Blake Weaver

Loved the video game talk! Star Wars gaming convos are some of my favorite. I would have put Star Wars Galaxies in a top 5. Best mmorpg I ever played and my favorite Star Wars game ever made. Kinda shocked Lego Star Wars the Skywalker Saga ranked so low.

Craig Wehr

If you don't want to slug through The Old Republic video game you could also learn more about Revan in the novel Star Wars: The Old Republic: Revan on Audible

Eric from Phoenix

Galaxies fan here too. Played from Beta 3 (still have the disks) to shut down. Ahazi server. So much fun. Crazy thing is I didn’t join a guild until the last three years or so it was running.

Blake Weaver

I played on the Tarquinas server from just post CU to almost shut down. I’ll never forget my guilds and friends I had on that game even though I was really young. Still haven’t had a Star Wars gaming experience like I have with that.

Joe

Enjoyed this episode. Lots of nostalgia. Some odder games unmentioned that I also have memories of: Yoda Stories, Rebellion, Mysteries of the Sith,

Sean W. from Warsaw

Hey! This is a fun conversation so far! I'm only about 15 minutes in, but I had to comment. Them putting Empire at War towards the bottom of the list is a real low blow for SW games. Lol This rts is super unique amongst any rts out there. As far as I know, it's the ONLY rts game that let's you do turn-based movement on a galactic scale while also letting you do real time battles in both space and ground--with one being able to impact the other. Some rts games let you do turn based galactic movements with real time space battles, but never also having real time ground. You might get lucky to find one or two with turn based ground battles as well, but even those are super rare. That EAW does what I described is incredible enough, but it goes so much further, on account of letting you play the classic SW heroes with unique abilities--AND it had a whole new expansion called Forces of Corruption, which tells an original story about a new faction of the underworld with all original and interesting characters. So it's the Rebels, Empire, and the underworld all on a massive galactic scale. Truly one of a kind gem. This deserved to be towards the top all day long! Can't recommend this classic enough.

Sean W. from Warsaw

Yep, mods are truly the way to go for keeping the classics alive and fresh. I'm a firm believer that the fans know how to do this stuff better than the studios anymore. I'm a big Empire at War fan, and have played it since it came out a couple decades ago or close to it, but the modding scene for that game is out of this world. Ships that look about as good as the movies. The passion of the fans to keep these old games around is second to none.

Sean W. from Warsaw

I have a fond memory of what must have been the original X-wing game, I can't clearly recall. It was one of those first SW flight games. Anyways, I remember my grandpa, who was big in PC stuff, had gotten that game and invited the family over. My brother and I were playing this level where you got to fly through Beggar's Canyon itself! I think you could even fly a T-16 Skyhopper. I didn't know what I was doing at all and kept crashing and blowing up. Got too frustrated with it and never returned to it after that. Lol BUT I have always wanted to play it again!

Sean W. from Warsaw

YES! The Trilogy arcade game is the highlight of my SW gaming, period! I used to play this every time I'm go to the theater--until they got rid of it.... So bummed! But I remember I loved that game so much because you could duel with Vader, and it was so tough. I had a class project I had to do for an art class where we had to make an object fully formed out of whatever material. I had a SW magazine that had an interview with Mark Hamill and it had a picture of his lightsaber from ROTJ real big on a page. I was so impressed I got my dad to take me to a hardware store to get pvc piping material so I could replicate it. Spent several days out in the yard with his dremil tool crafting it just right. Had pvc dust in my hair and all over me for days after that! It was awful, because you couldn't take a shower like that or you'd screw your drains up with plastic. Lol Anyways, when I was finished I used a spare pvc pipe, fairly long, to slip into the end of it so I could actually sword fight a bit with my brother. He had a baseball bat and I had my saber and we tried to replicate the duel from the Trilogy game! Amazing times growing up!

Sean W. from Warsaw

That's when I was first getting into SW, myself. I was 10 years old. Very nostalgic for so much on that list!

Sean W. from Warsaw

Just finished listening. Such a fun episode! Anytime SW gaming is brought up I get pumped! Thanks for the convo, gents!

Eric from Phoenix

Great job Rob and Jimmy! I loved the Rebel Fleet Trooper and always wanted an action figure of that character when I was a kid. Here are some comments on video games (mentioned and not mentioned): 1) The Star Wars Atari sit down arcade game was amazing!!! Loved playing that at Showbiz Pizza when I was a kid. 2) Jedi Knight - Dark Forces 2 - Didn't that game feature live action cut scenes too? I loved that the story would change based on doing light or dark side things in the game. I did dark side things and ended up killing Jan at the end of the game via a cut-scene. 3) Old Republic - I played this game from the last beta until around 2015. Very fun game and lots of story line and content. This game launched the day after Star Wars Galaxies shut down. The Old Republic is still up and running and it looks like they've recently added content. 4) Star Wars Galaxies - My gosh, this was a great game! So much detail and complex game play. You had space, planets, crafting, Jedi, Bounty Hunters, the Galactic Civil War and so much more. The problem with all this complexity was that they couldn't balance the game and there was no actual story line for you to follow while playing. I played from Beta 3 until the game closed down. 5) Battlefront 2 - This game was a mess prior to the official launch with pay to win. Thankfully this was taken out of the game during the early launch period. This game ended up being amazing when I stopped playing in 2020. 6) Super Empire Strikes Back - Couldn't agree more that this was the best of the Super NES series. I still have nightmares of the Chewie howl during one of the levels on Cloud City. It required timing jumps and you just died over and over again. The level had to be played by Chewie and he constantly did the same howl over and over too. Ughhhh. 7) Dark Forces - Great game with the original story on how the Death Star plans were stolen. 8) Star Wars Rebellion - I loved this grand strategy game and just recently bought it off Steam for my laptop (it works great). Never been a game before or since with that level of galactic strategy. The only downfall of this game is the micromanagement required. Also, due to all the mouse clicking I usually feel like I need carpal tunnel surgery after playing. Fantasy Flight Games released a board game based on the computer game. They perfectly captured the spirit of the electronic version without all of the micromanagement. So much fun!

zillobeast

Great pod. I’m now confused which edition of battlefront 2 I have, it’s an Amazing game but I’m not sure if I’ve got the good or the bad one according to the poll! My favs Jedi fallen order Kotor Battlefront 2 Force unleashed Enjoyed historically all the Lego games but the new one became a bit repetitive Agree re the rogue squadron game that came out last year. Flight games are not for me. Cheers

Maddie G

Really enjoyed this one! Still shocked that Jedi fallen order didn’t make too 5 - I really thought it would be one or two.

Maddie G

also for anyone interested, Sam Witwer streams on twitch and the last game he played was dark forces so he might do it again next time. Always a good time.

Jeff Holland

Good Q&A! Nice to go down the list of games I played at one time or another. I guess everyone has their own top 5/10 list of SW games. Heck, I still play SW Battlefront (2015) on PS4. Also another SW game I play everyday on my iPhone is SW Galaxy of Heroes. Fun addictive game. Been playing it since it came out (in 2015, I think).

Jeff Holland

And I used to play the Empire at War PC game. It was a lot of fun! It was kind of like Sim City but you played vs an opponent (computer). The game had a very fun cheat code - a killer Ewok who could destroy anything with one hit. Also it was fun sending like 50+ Jedi (or Siths) attacking and destroying enemies the opponents buildings, bases, etc.

Kyle Burress

This was a great topic! Two games that I remember first having as a kid were the original Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back for the first Nintendo. It took me forever, but I eventually beat both games

Rob Strecker

Dark Forces II Jedi Knight was my introduction into Star Wars gaming.
