As we look back at the Sequel Trilogy, us STAR WARS fans often need to do mental gymnastics just to make any sense out of the whole thing. RFR V.I.P. Jamie Bruno focuses on THE LAST JEDI and presents us with a bunch of pros and cons...Mostly cons. But don't worry...We don't spend the whole show complaining about the Sequel Trilogy. We also complain about SOLO!  Plus, toy mynocks, STAR TREK, and Telly Savalas!

I think it's really important as star wars fans that we have honest conversation about these movies. Not toxic positivity and not neckbeard negativity either. There are so many fans who are literally afraid to say anything less than stellar about Star Wars for fear their credibility will be challenged. It's ridiculous. I'm very glad you covered this topic and I can't wait to listen.

Great episode, Jamie! Not a fan of the sequel trilogy either. Like you said though, I also enjoyed the Knives Out films and the Pokerface series. That being said, I believe it’s pronounced “Ryan”.

Blake Weaver

Great conversation guys! Not only about the sequels but pop culture in general. The Trek talk might have convinced me to check out piccard season 3.

The key distinction between Solo and the sequel films is that underneath the superficial criticisms of Solo, it's still fundamentally a good story that upholds and enriches the characters we love. I get that not everyone bought in on Alden as a younger Han, or that the film was too dark, or that L7 strains tolerability as comic relief, but I still consider these to be surface level elements. The script is solid. Alden may not be Han but the Han character, as written, is still true to the Han we're going to come to know in A New Hope. His relationship with Lando works. Even Qi'ra and Beckett work as characters since their effect on young Han is entirely consistent with who his character becomes. Ultimately, Solo respects its character and that's why many of us wanted to see more of it. It didn't try to 'subvert our expectations' or slog Han down with some deconstructivist, feel-bad-about-our-heroes revision. It's certainly not a film without flaws, and I totally respect why, for many, Alden is just too much of a hurdle to get over. But when I watch it, I see a great, fun story that genuinely pays tribute to my favorite character and feels like classic Star Wars.

Maybe it should have been a book instead. But as a film, it doesn't work. At all. The villain often makes the story great, but that cannot be applied here. Dryden Vos is awful.

Tend to agree, I think Michael K. Williams would have been a more compelling villain if they CGI’d his character like originally planned, the guy they had now just was so plain and looked like he had a bad case of the rash. I also hate how they crammed all of Han’s “big moments” ( meeting Chewy, Kessel run, etc.) into one movie. Overall I like the world building and actually think Alden does a decent Han, albeit no Harrison Ford.

Rebel Force Radio

Unfortunately, all the "big moments" were sort of a let down. Han meets Chewie and wins him over by speaking Wookiee? (cringe). Kessel Run? (too dark/weird). I think Childish Gambino doesn't quite hit the landing as Lando either. The chemistry between him and Alden didn't feel like the Han/Lando dynamic I always pictured. I don't mind some fans liking it...I WANT to like it...But this lobbying Lucasfilm to make a sequel needs to stop. Plenty of other stories to tell.

Jimmy, Zorri Bliss is at Polekatz on Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays. Next RFR hangout!?

Adam Taylor

So many things I agree with in the pod. Great show guys

Todd “Suds” Sedlacek

Great conversation!!! FYI - I use Overcast and it has a pretty robust search function. And Jimmy - I always thought the term “stop set” was used because the commercials always “stopped” the fun 😛

amen, like a lot things in life - sober talks, drunken laughs :D I find myself right in the middle. I like everything SWs. Bad and good. In the same way I am a Yankees fan. I've got love and critiques Only difference is in the sports world, critique is actually a sign of being a fan hah (looking at all my Jets I get nervous being positive and critical because I never know the reaction I could trigger.

Great points but I’m sure Ryan got a script and if not then it’s on KK. And he wanted to write them in a box and then go from there… can’t deny he’s made greats movies but just not this one. Miscalculated on many characters.

One of the first times I watched Star Wars at home was at my Nana's house. She had a big old His Master's Voice Black and White TV set and I remember me and my brother sitting on the floor in Nana's tiny living room watching Star Wars in Black & White. It was fricken amazing back then!!

My wife and I loved the Solo movie too! I know it wasn't perfect but we really liked it but I know not everyone agrees. I loved the $6 million Man show when I was a kid and when it showed up on our local oldies TV station I started recording all of them. It hasn't aged well and is pretty horrible. Who thought slowing him down made him look cool??

Hey Mac, I remember you and Swank talking about the Telly Savalas thing way back. My problem with the patreon website is the lack of a volume control for the built-in audio player (I watch the video versions when available instead). Also, sometimes it is tougher to get to older content. There used to be a way to bring up month by month the older content. Now I have to bring up the whole year, sort by oldest (later will be newest to reduce the next step) then I scroll to where I am at.
