Recently on RFR Q&A, we had a discussion about the "turtle nun" caretakers of Ahch-To, aka The Lanai. Here to set the record straight is RFR V.I.P. Cris "Turtle Wars" Hagen, who has a vast knowledge of both STAR WARS and turtles. Cris is an expert in natural history, one of the top researchers of turtles in the field, and an original member of The Star Wars Generation.  He explains to us what makes the Lanai qualify as turtles, and what doesn't. Coincidently, both Cris and Jimmy Mac have appeared in recently published books. Plus, we discuss a vast array of subjects including the full season of AHSOKA and turtles, live music and turtles,  THE MANDALORIAN and turtles. And Turtles!

Can’t wait to listen to this and learn about the Turtle Nuns of Ach-To!

Sean W. from Warsaw

Hey, nice to see you back, man! Gonna try catching up on these Q and A's starting with this one!

Peter Beisser

Good stuff, Cris. Enjoyed the listen a lot. Can't believe how many shows you take down. Rock on, pal!

Maddie G

Great job Cris! I could listen to turtle facts all day. I’m impressed by the sheer amount of concerts that you have gone to - do you have any stand out/favourite shows? Or any particularly memorable ones (good/bad)?

RobO from ChicagO

This episode had everything… Star Wars, Rock n Roll, and turtle sex dolls! Good shit Chris.

Turtle Wars

Thanks Peter! I can't believe how many shows I've been to this year either. It's become a full-time hobby documenting and archiving my local music scene. Some weeks I spend up to 20-40 hrs on it. I've been going to concerts regularly since 1984, but this is by far the most I've been to in 1 year. It's awesome to see so many good underground bands of all ages still out there playing today!

Turtle Wars

Thanks Maddie! If you or anyone else are really interested in listening to me talk about turtles, if you do a YouTube search for Cris Hagen Turtles, you will find several videos of me being interviewed and/or giving tours of our turtle conservation center on various podcasts and YouTube channels over the past 10 years. As far as memorable, I'm not sure anything tops having a 36-year-old man fall over dead onto me in the mosh pit during a Subhumans show this past June. That was an experience that I've never had during a concert before. I'm pretty happy that I've been able to check off several bands this year that have been around for decades and I never saw before, such as, Agent Orange, G.B.H., The Queers, D.R.I. The Circle Jerks, Negative Approach, T.S.O.L., Messer Chups, The 5.6.7.8's, and Agnostic Front (coming up in two weeks). I also really enjoy discovering and learning about all of the newer young bands I'd never heard of before. There is so much enjoyable music out there that doesn't get much recognition.

Turtle Wars

Hell yeah, thanks! Too bad we ran out of time; I could have showed the 3D printed turtle sex dolls and described their legitimate use in captive management. As well as the different types of vibrators that we use as medical instruments to help tell if a turtle is a male before it is mature.

Tanya S

Great show! I need to check out your YouTube channel, Cris. I used to go to a lot of punk shows but now I get tired haha. I’m a “girl VIP” so maybe an interview soon. ✊🏼

Turtle Wars

Thanks Tanya! Do it! I for one, would be interested in hearing some SW experiences and perspectives on the Q&A from a female point of view. I would say some of the best punk bands I’ve seen and documented this year include: The 33’s, The Jasons, Billy Batts & The Made Men, Round Eye, Dog Bite, Hybrid Mutants, Cult of Bastards, Exaggerators, Soda City Riot, Hale Bopp Astronauts, Close Encounter, Norcos Y Horchata, and Scrooge Mandella…just to name a few. Unfortunately, a few of these bands don’t exist anymore though.

Mark

Hey Chris, Humbled by your extremely generous donation to “Rancho” as a member of the RFR community. The sort of thing that makes me proud to be a member of such a community. You’re a real gentleman.

Turtle Wars

Well, thank you Mark! I’m just trying to do my small part contributing to this great community. But I don’t know about me being called a gentleman, I think that might be a first.

Todd “Suds” Sedlacek

Never in a million years did I ever think I would hear a reference to Frankie “Hollywood” Rodriguez on a Star Wars podcast. As an old school house head from back in the day, I am well acquainted with him. 😎

Eric from Phoenix

Great job Chris! A ton of fun and I learned a couple things too. Jim, I’m just like you. My phone is always on silent and I constantly miss Andrea’s calls. Let’s just say that “frustrates” her a bit :) Phantom Menace Retro figures?? I’m in!

Jeff Holland

Great discussion! Any talk about Slayer, LSD, etc I’m in! 😂
