Rey movie on? Rey movie off? Rey movie next? Rey movie delayed indefinitely? Inconsistent, yet consistent, rumors are flying around about the status of Daisy Ridley’s upcoming Rey Skywalker film. We analyze the rumors and look at other clues about the mysterious movie, including comments from Daisy Ridley herself. Are future stories told outside STAR WARS canon via Marvel’s “What-if…?” concept on the way? We consider the potential and offer ten ideas for “What-If…?” STAR WARS stories. We have audio highlights from recent interviews including an ANDOR update from Diego Luna, a look back at AHSOKA season one via comments from Rosario Dawson and Eman Esfandi, and Natalie Portman talks about meeting “her son” Mark Hamill at The Golden Globe Awards. Plus, STAR WARS in Pop Culture and more!

Pretty sure she died in TROS lol

Got some snow to shovel today, so I’m so glad a new episode dropped! Look forward to listening!

Turtle Wars

Great show this week. I really enjoy these in depth discussions of all the news of new SW coming out and not coming out. I would prefer they didn’t spend time making a lot of disposable SW like Visions or a “What if…” series. I recognize they have their place for some fans. But they just don’t interest me the way the main connected greater SW stories do.

Kyle Davis

Sorry Jimmy Mac, there is no Sinbad Shazam movie haha. It’s a very popular Mandela effect. I could have sworn I saw it as a kid.

I’m pretty certain the promise to Luke moment, the flash back of Leia saying this lightsaber will belong to her who finish my journey is speaking of Rey taking her place as if Leia was going to commit to helping Luke build the order. That’s what I got from it. If Leia choose the path of a Jedi.

Ben P. Stein

I so enjoyed the "What If" segment--fun suggestions by Jimmy. If Luke were raised on Alderaan instead of Leia, I think he would have been much more of a Jar Jar-style senator (at least at first). I was laughing out loud at the clever commentary, including Jason's quip that all his "What Ifs" have to do with the sequel trilogy. So many updates and insights about the various series and upcoming films. A great episode, which I enjoyed in part while shoveling the snow we got in Maryland today.

I love you guys, but why such a strong stance on a controversial director who’s unproven in Star Wars?! One of the reasons we love Star Wars as you point out is escapism

Rebel Force Radio

We also are committed to the behind-the-scenes stories as well. We like to peak behind the curtain. This particular production is something of a mystery and we are trying to crack it's code. The choice for director is way out of the box so we are simply interested in why she was chosen.

Can’t wait to listen… was actually making my own “What If?” List and was planning on making my Q&A return prior to this release, I’m sure Jimmy and Jason’s list/banter blow mine out of the water.

Brian Walters

Yes! Jason made a good point about Disney’s budget but he actually sold me on the “What if” series with the idea of sequel trilogy what if.

Adams theory is great, and definitely something I agree with. I never thought SOC was hired because of the casting, but I think that will be a by-product of that which I have no issue with. As for a what ifs series they’ve got a lot of the assets already from the clone wars/bad batch/totj, I don’t think it would be as expensive as other things to tell some of those stories. It also has less of a buy in, since you only need the main points to understand the convergence. The series did well for Marvel, so maybe that’s why, if it’s actually in production and not just a baseless rumour.

Gareth Williams

Lot of people online seem to be really unhappy about What if…? It’s kinda throwaway but could be fun I think. My suggestions would be… What if Padme lived? What if the Star Destroyer gunner shot down the droids escape pod (would tell a different story somehow ending up with the same outcome of Luke blowing up the Death Star). What if Ashoka didn’t leave the Jedi and stayed with Anakin? All of the What If suggestions I have seen so far have been ‘in universe’ but you could have some more meta’ what ifs too. What if Star Wars was made in a different era of filmmaking (1920s silent, 1940s noir, present day). What if Mark, Carrie and Harrison didn’t get the parts - retell it with other actors from those black and white audition tapes. What if they were ALL puppets? Unlikely to happen but would be fun.

Peter Beisser

I'm definitely happiest living in the past awash with nostalgia. The weeks where the headlines dominate discussion bum me out. A lot less laughs.

While I think What If? could be fun, I agree that it would be novel and I would rather them create canon animation. Visions is fine because it's mostly external studios. A couple ideas, though: WHAT IF Obi-Wan accepted Count Dooku's offer to join him. WHAT IF Darth Maul defeated Obi-Wan on Naboo. WHAT IF Rey never got rescued from Starkiller Base (AKA WHAT IF Rey fell to the dark side). WHAT IF Sebulba was successful in sabotaging Anakin's pod, in turn winning the race (would create interesting drama, likely involving the Hutts and potentially allowing the Trade Federation to keep Naboo)

Quinnton PNW

And I think it would work better in a video game. Though, of course, that's even more expensive than animation.

Chris Kalan

I couldn't agree more with your opinion's on "what if". I never liked when Marvel did it in comic format even :(

Trevor Hallam

Great episode! I’m definitely up for a “What If” for the Wars. I just finished season two of Marvel’s What If, and found it to be more compelling than almost everything that Marvel has put out since Endgame. Loved the finale of it. So if they do that for Star Wars, knowing full well it has nothing to do with the true canon, I am all for it. More, Star Wars! Do an hour long episode where Anakin doesn’t fall to the dark side and Palps escapes from him and Mace… heck yeah. Or what if Qui-Gon never died…

The way both hosts (but especially Swank) are so ready and excited to cut down a female director before ANYTHING is known about the project is really just wild. Even worse, Swanks ongoing mocking of female directors and producers voices is just straight up inappropriate. I love so much of this podcast, but sometimes it's like listening to your relatives who can't parse real news from fake news facebook posts.

Rebel Force Radio

It’s so interesting how so many people can hear the same show and walk away with vastly different takes. Some call us haters. Some call us shills. Many thought our approach to the SOC controversy as reasonable and balanced. Also, when someone involved in Star Wars says stupid things, they will fall under our scrutiny. Male or female, nobody is getting a free pass. Unless you’re new around here, you’ll know we do a lot of impressions and voice mimicking on the show, especially of the leaders of Star Wars: GL, Filoni, and yes, KK.

Rebel Force Radio

To back up my point, here’s a recent review of RFR written by (gasp) a woman: Thank you, thank you, thank you for this episode! Thank you for discussing Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and sharing her background and history as a filmmaker and activist. I knew there had to be more context to the story than what we were seeing in the headlines, and I was incredibly disappointed with the comments I was seeing from Star Wars fans. It seemed like people were only reading the headlines and not doing what Jimmy Mac did and actually learning who SOC truly is as a person and a filmmaker. I personally loved the Ms. Marvel series. Ms. Marvel and her family have a large part in the newest Captain Marvel movie, and they were one of my favorite parts of that film. (I really enjoyed the movie even though many people are calling it a flop. I would highly recommend it. It’s a fun movie!) I agree with everything you guys had to say in your episode. My respect for both of you has always been high, and after this episode it is even higher. #MTFBWY

What if...Rey's promise to Luke was an implied promise...? That's kinda the way I've always understood it, similar to how I've always understood, for all the years before the ST, Luke rebuilding the Jedi Order after the OT. As far as I have always understood it, Luke never overtly says he'll bring back the Jedi. Yet I've never talked to a single person who ever thought he wasn't going to, either even back in the day when it was just the OT around. That Luke was gonna bring back the Jedi is something that never really needed to be spelled out. Everyone knew it. It's kinda the foundation of the old EU, in a way, at least as I've always seen it, regarding the continuation of Luke's story past the OT, anyways. I guess I've just never understood the problem with Rey and the promise to continue the Jedi. She even goes so far as to make her own saber at the end of TROS, which for me spelled it out pretty clearly she was serious about carrying the Jedi on. For me, I guess I'm looking at sub-text alot to understand the broader implications of these stories. It's good stuff!

Rebel Force Radio

Yoda imploring Luke to “pass on what you’ve learned” implies he wishes Luke to teach the ways of the Jedi to Leia and other Force users.

Sean W. from Warsaw

I've heard this before, about Yoda instructing him to pass on what he learned. My issue with that is that of the full context: "Luke, the Force runs strong in your family. Pass on what you have learned. ...Luke, there is another Skywalker." I've heard two interpretations of that: That he was instructing Luke to pass on his knowledge of the Force to just his family due to them being strong in the Force; or to pass it on to both the family and others. It can be taken either way, for sure. But my point is that it's not explicitly about passing on the Jedi way itself. Merely knowledge of the Force. There's no explicit call to carry on the Jedi path itself to others. Regardless, Luke proclaiming to the Emperor "I am a Jedi, like my father before me" sells it that he's going to maintain that himself, at least; and it would stand to reason he wouldn't want the Jedi to die out. But it's still only implied, never spelled out. What I'm saying is that that statement could be an implied promise to honor his masters and carry on the Jedi. I see Rey's "I am a Jedi" statement in her making that lightsaber at the end. To me, ever since seeing it for the first time she might as well have been saying she vows to carry it on. If Luke carried on the Jedi without making an explicit promise, he certainly carried them on making an implicit one, or a vow (after ROTJ, I mean, ala the old novels especially). No one would go through all that work without making a serious commitment, sacrificing one's safety over and over again. In the same way, the lightsaber is a symbol of something deeper: That same commitment. I see the promise synonymous with the commitment as represented in the lightsaber of Rey's. Making the weapon, not just inheriting it, is the outward manifestation of the otherwise unspoken promise. Why would anyone make the weapon otherwise? I don't get the impression she made it for kicks; or for going solo. Or that she would want the Jedi to fade away, especially given she still had the Jedi texts from Luke and was seen studying them. Maybe I'm looking too deep into it, though! But that's always been pretty clear to me. :) I will say, though, that KK could have stood to clarify, for sure! 😆

Great discussion guys. I know I’ve said this before but why can’t we get animated stories from the old EU? I would think the cost would be less since the stories are done and just need to be tweaked for the series. This would be so popular for a huge part of the Star Wars fan base and totally get’s at the “what if question?”. I’d love to see Heir to the Empire, Tales from Mos Eisley Cantina, Tales of the Bounty Hunters, Dark Empire, Han Solo Adventures, Lando Adventures, Splinter of a Minds Eye.
