One of the greatest things STAR WARS provides is the ability to share the saga with a child. Many fathers take this "passing of the lightsaber" very seriously and consider several factors when introducing "The Wars" to their sons and daughters. How old should they be? What order should the films be watched? Is a trip to Galaxy's Edge worth it? RFR V.I.P. Nate Wenzel returns to the Q&A for the first time as a father and he's excited to share his fandom with his young son Miles. Nate searches for tips and advice on bringing Miles up to speed with STAR WARS and a lifetime of shared fandom.

Cannot wait to hear this episode. I've struggled, and I think partly failed, with this same topic. My son is now 8. When he was younger (pre age 6) we kept him away from anything that involved a lot of fighting because we immediately saw him incorporate it into his play. We expanded his horizon around 6/7 into shows with action and minimal violence, mostly some Marvel movies because my wife is a fan. I had wanted to introduce the SW movies ~7, though, because they can get a bit heavy (ROTS, for instance). He already knows the basic SW story because I've read lots of SW-related books to him growing up; for example, the SW Little Golden Books. So he knows Anakin becomes Vader, Vader is Luke's dad, etc. Well, he is now 8 and we have yet to start the process. He saw a bit of ANH because my mom was watching it during one of her visits - I freaked that he had his first SW movie experience without me, though I am clearly at fault for delaying the start. The reason I kept waiting is that I wanted to introduce the films to him with a good sound system. Our TV is beautiful to look at, but the built-in speakers are meh (as you'd expect). Well, one thing led to another and that big speaker purchase has been delayed and delayed. Maybe if the tax man brings me a big refund this year then I will splurge for the sound system and I can finally kick off his SW movie experience.

Rebel Force Radio

I say plow ahead with whatever sound system you have. As an audiophile, I get it. But you can always have the rewatch with the better sound system in the future. I bet your kid, like most kids, won't even notice the audio quality. The lightsabers, aliens, creatures, starships, laser blasts - all that stuff will catch his attention and the sound won't even matter. Don't go for perfect. Go for indoctrination!

Nathan Wenzel

Agree 100% Deff go for it! As long as you are there experiencing it with him and able to explain what’s violent and things not to do. For example, explain you would never chop off your kids hand

Nate, glad you're back. Congratulations on the youngster! Friends of ours welcomed a new daughter last year a few months early, too. She wound up doing great--tough kid. Was overjoyed to be named her godfather. I'm gonna be the one who works with her folks to introduce her to SW. Your conversation with JMac packed a lot of tips to do it right!

Welcome back, Nate! And congrats! I've been wondering for a long time what happened to you. Becoming a father makes perfect sense! Jimmy and I had a brief discussion on this topic just before 2023 ended, so I'm looking forward to hearing this one, for sure!

Btw, in case you didn't get to catch up for a while on these Q&As, we just had our first daughter a few months ago; and our first son 3 years ago! So this topic has been very much on my mind!

Great Episode! Congrats on the new addition Nate! Sharing Star Wars with my kids is my favorite thing! It was Clone Wars and Lego. Jimmy Mac, my son Logan gave you that Clone Trooper at the ghost. He was excited to see you had it in the studio! Looking forward to another meet up!

Rebel Force Radio

YES! Thanks for coming out that night. It was great to meet you and Logan. I also saved the RFR paper ornament he gave me. It now resides in "The Vault".

Congrats Nate on the youngling! Jimmy gave some really good advice, and to let kids discover Star Wars on their own. My mum was super into Star Wars, and wanted all us kids to be too and of course it had the opposite effect! When I did discover it on my own, it became something that mum and I shared together, which is really special.

Congratulations and welcome back Nate! It is never too early to start reading with your child, and that is how we introduced Star Wars with our kids. 5 minute Star Wars Stories is a great book as well as Golden Books that have great illustrations. I highly recommend the purchasing the Memory Maker at Disney World. This allows unlimited photos from the professionals in the parks.

That was an enjoyable episode to listen to Nate. Even though I can’t necessarily relate, and have zero experience in this area (I never had any offspring and have generally ended up alone for much of my life), I still find it interesting to hear about the different techniques that all of you parents are using when attempting to introduce your love of SW to your children and the next generations. Congratulations and good luck with everything.

I call my kids my "prequel babies." My daughter was born a couple of weeks before Ep 1 was released. Matter of fact, Ep 1 was her mother and I's first post birth outing without her. My son was born a few months before Ep 2. They both grew up on Star Wars and it's the best feeling watching them love it like you do.

Todd “Suds” Sedlacek

So glad to hear you again Nate! Great episode - I really enjoyed hearing you picking Jimmy’s brain about being a Star Wars dad. Congrats!!

Nathan Wenzel

Thanks, turtle wars! Always love your perspective! Looking forward to meeting you in the future someday

Nathan Wenzel

Thanks Eddy! Wonder what Miles is Star Wars will be as he’s growing up. Like will we get episode 1011 and 12 when he’s that perfect age?

Eddie Baker

No doubt he will have "his Star Wars." I got to experience that with my son. He loves it all but Clone Wars is his. Nothing makes him cry, but seeing live action Ahsoka and Anakin did it cause he got to see his childhood all over again. Happy/proud dad moment for sure.

Great Q&A, Nate! My niece has been going to SDCC since she was one year old. If you have a plan in place, conventions are totally doable for younglings. My sister and I would take turns supervising her and she would generally sleep in the stroller for most of the day. Have fun navigating your way through the galaxy with your youngling!

Congrats on the birth of your son and great to have you back! I had tons of fun listening to the conversation. Jimmy, I waited in the hail for George at C3. I remember you telling me about your “unique” path to the panel. Do you remember when George confused Jay for Tem? Awkward. I agree with Jim. I think ideal age for a convention is 10 (that was our experience). Part of this could be the fact my wife and I had been to four of these before we took our kids, that it was hard for us to flex to a different experience. My TV watching is just like Jimmy’s and it drives my wife nuts:) Disney will be great with a little one as you’ll just need to rotate turns.
