I read a lot of my dad's Tintin books growing up and still have a fondness for them. Those of you with eagle eyes will recognize the Crab with the Golden Claws from the Herge book of the same name. I really enjoy little product label easter eggs like this so I got one in here.This whole page uses long, wordless panels with languid smoke to really decelerate and linger in this rare moment of pause. In this moment we finally see the face behind the mask - gaunt, weary, sorrowful. I still really struggle with keeping characters on-model but the plan with Tilly is to emphasize her sunken cheeks, ringed eyes, and short, functional mess of hair. Helena Bonham Carter's protrayal of Marla Singer in the 1999 movie Fight Club is a major source of reference and inspiration for Tilly's look.Apologies for bursting any fan theory bubbles, but there are no subliminal images hidden in the smoke. If you see anything it's because it's an inkblot.
