The end-chapter splash page didn't really warrant its own commentary page, so I've combined it with the first page proper of chapter 3. You'll be seeing these at the end of each chapter, and they reference page "zero", the microscopic image of a single plague bacterium. My plan is to increase the number of bacteria on each end-chapter page to metaphorically and literally represent the threat. On page 32 I tried to set the scene with a small amount of motion, ie: the crows taking off in flight. The "lot full" sign was actually quite a late addition to the scene and I think it adds a horrible understatement to the ranks of bodies laid out. The scene is one of banal horror - routine sorting and marking those dead fortunate enough to be tagged and bagged in a "temporary" holding lot. These would have been middleclass victims with family or infrastructure capable of having them labeled. Many former patients of the pesthouses would wind up here with earnest intent but no means to transport them to any kind of final burial. In more impoverished or dire spots, simple pits or mass graves would have to do. The truly unfortunate are incinerated where they died.
