Having Tilly's face dip out of frame as she grabs the bare essentials emphasizes her figurative and literal transformation. I hope to explore the shift in character that she and others in her line of work undergo when they don their equipment.Panel three is about as much stuff going on in a page as I care to cram in without risking it being busy. I think it's okay to throw a lot of stuff in but it's essential that it all read okay and have a priority. I use full black line art to draw attention to the foreground and dark grey for the background for a somewhat out-of-focus appearance. The word balloons cascade from upper left to lower right, with the one exception being the injured orderly on the floor whose dialogue isn't as crucial and can be read at any time.Writing in slang and dialect is a very tricky affair. For something so setting-specific it would be too noticeable to write all the dialogue in completely plain, Canadian English - but I also didn't want to go full-blown Irvine Welsh and become difficult to read. I research a lot of slang and speech patterns of the era and use contracted words sparingly. I wanted this character to sound more, well, common as they say in England so he has a very informal speaking style. Whenever possible I try and run my dialogue past genuine Britons that I know online to see if it sounds natural to them and so far, so good.
