Oh, I’m so excited! We’ve reached this moment!

Can anyone guess which fairy tale this references right now?

It’s not the most famous fairy tale, so I’ll give you a hint: it was written by Andersen. (No, not The Little Mermaid.)😉

Oops! I made a mistake. Oscar Wilde wrote the fairy tale. (They’re sitting next to each other on my shelf.)

And there’s already a correct answer in the comments!

I understand his need but still sad about his eye🥺

OH NO! NOT THE SHADOW

Aishling Sparrow

Wait, are we going for “The Shadow”? I need to look it up… we had a traveling storyteller (seriously) tell our class this one when I was in kindergarten. I haven’t heard it again since (like many of the stories they told us!). I need to find it and see what this portents, if that’s right…

Sick as hell, in all the meanings of the words

Ocytocyne

He’s going Peter Pan

SummerHeart

I dunno, sounds like Peter Schlemihl? Although it did inspire Hans's, 'The Shadow'.....

SummerHeart

Ironically The Shadow was also written by Hans Christian Andersson but I think this might be more like Peter Schlemihl which was a fairytale that inspired The Shadow.

The shadow reminds me of The Fisherman and His Soul by Oscar Wilde. A short story where a fisherman gives up his shadow to live with a mermaid in the ocean.

'The snow queen' or ' the shadow' reference?

SummerHeart

......Hey. Hey. HEEEEEEY! Wouldn't it be interesting if the Shadow had Esme's missing eye? Dx

Isabella Negron

Peter pan wasn't H.C. Anderson though, I think it's a shadow and snow queen reference

Aishling Sparrow

Ooh, I’d never heard of that one. To be honest I barely remember The Shadow so I’ll have to look both up.

Aishling Sparrow

Oh, I’ve not read that one! I’ll have to look it up as well… I’m intensely curious about the answer so I now have several stories to dig up 😅 Thanks for the answer!

Can we stop this carousel of fucked upness?

SummerHeart

.......YO! Wait! 'The Shadow' went and inspired Oscar Wildes, 'The Fisherman and the Mermaid'! Oh. Ooooooh. Oooooh nooooooooo. NOOOOOOOOO! Dx In Wildes story a Fisherman falls in love with a mermaid, but the mermaid says they can't be together because he has a soul. The Fisherman meets with a Witch who agrees to help for a price. Severing the Soul from Fisherman requires the Fishermans shadow to be cut away. The Soul/Shadow begs not to be let out without a heart but the Fisherman refuses.

SummerHeart

There's a chain there. Peter Schlemihl inspired Hans Anderssons 'The Shadow' and he directly references it in his story. Then Oscar Wilde got inspired by the Shadow and wrote the 'Fisherman and the Mermaid'. It wouldn't shock me in the slightest if Ripushko were drawing on The Shadow and The Fisherman and the Mermaid for inspiration. Maybe even Peter Schlemihl. It wouldn't also surprise me if Esme's shadow posseses his missing eye. Dx

SummerHeart

I suddenly recalled that 'The Shadow' also inspired Oscar Wildes, 'The Fisherman and the Mermaid' which has a lot of parallels with Esme and Atlases story.

Sinistral Storm

this is both fascinating and horrifying 😳

SummerHeart

Hey Friend. I know the Story is getting fucked up right now....But it's about to get way worse. :v (And I'm here for it.)

SummerHeart

Okay. So the fact that we're going with The Fisherman and the Mermaid is giving me all kinds of wild thoughts, especially coupled with Fairybends stuff so far. I'm going to take several stabs in the dark to try and calm my brain down. XD 1.) Esme's shadow/soul is going to be a mirror image of Esme and not a kind of living shadow ala Peter Pan. I also think ShadowEsme is going to possess Esme's missing eye. 2.) ShadowEsme is going to have Esme's 'weaker' emotions in him. Things like love for his friends, mercy, doubt, fear and etc. (Some of these are pretty positive.) This going to result in Esme and ShadowEsme behaving wildly different from the Esme we all know and love since Esme is clove in twain on a spiritual level. 3.) Without his love of Atlas being present, ShadowEsme might fall in love with Rapunzel. Which might complicate everything later on. What road the story takes will depend on....A lot. XD But this is legit exciting.

parsley

i feel so heartbroken for him... but everything is so enticing

M Staloch

OK, firewood it is.

Love for your friends... what does that mean for Rose who Esme saved...
