This was a great show! So glad that you also enjoyed it. I too was having the “heebie-jeebies” with Lakan until episode 23. I felt so bad for him but my brain was so confused because of my previous preconceived notions about him. Lakan and Fengxian’s story is so tragic and heartbreaking. Also I can’t wait for season 2! Hope you’ll watch/react to it as the episode comes out.

Prosopagnosia (face blindness) is an actual condition. 15:13 Yes the uncle was the doctor at the rear palace Lakan's face blindness allows him to see the face he remembers. Meimei sent Maomao the letter to let her know Lankan bought out Fengxian, that's who Maomao was dancing for, Lankan paid big to buy out the contract so that's why the big celebration.

All I could think about when I first watch the chess scene b/t MaoMao and Lakan was... "What you do not smell is call Iocane powder. It is odorless, tasteless, dissolves instantly in liquid, and is among the more deadly poisons known to man."

I was a little confused by learning Lakan's real backstory with Maomao and her mother because back in Ep 15, Lakan explicitly says that he played a 'dirty trick' and lowered the value of the courtesan on purpose, with the intention of purchasing her. But then we learn it is actually a tragic tale of him accidentally impregnating her right before being forced to go abroad. He did not even realize he had done it. HE DOES NOT EVEN KNOW SHE IS STILL ALIVE LIKE WTF So that makes me question, was he just lying to us back then? Does he want Jinshi to think he is some terrible person when he really isn't? Or does Lakan blame himself so much that he now views it as he did it on purpose? Either way, it kind of bothers me that we are given explicitly false information to guide our feelings about a character. It is one thing for a character to be misunderstood, but that is not what happens here, we are simply told something that is the opposite of the truth from a first person source. It obviously made the twist much harder to figure out, but in the wrong way in my opinion. Like, if we disregard the lie and look at what Lakan does, he is really just an intelligent and playful guy who likes to test people. He is not malicious at all, in fact he is quite helpful in a roundabout way. But it is tough to disregard the lie when it comes from LAKAN HIMSELF
