The reason Hikki acted like that at the end to Yui is because he doesn't want to get hurt. We've seen from early flashbacks that he assumed kindness from girls as a romantic interest and got burned for it multiple times. To be constantly bullied and let down from your own expectations does affect you.. especially as an inexperienced teenager, which is why he is a self proclaimed loner cos he doesn't want to get hurt anymore. To him its better to be alone than risk assuming you're friends with someone or that they have a romantic interest in you when that never was the case. This is why when he found out that she was the owner of the dog he immediately came to this disappointed conclusion that she's only nice out of guilt and not genuine interest. Him categorizing people comes from his obsessive need to observe and understand his surroundings to ensure he doesn't misunderstand or misassume something and get hurt again.
