I feel like a dick being critical but I’m REALLY hoping we get some backstory for Amane’s self-esteem issues as soon as possible because at this point it kind of feels like the entire show is trying to advance (to an almost immersion breaking degree) and he’s just not letting it. I think if it was a romcom and the whole point was ‘will-they, won’t-they’ hijinks meant to last an infinite number of manga chapters it wouldn’t really matter but I feel like they sit on the couch and have a variation of the same “serious” conversation nearly every episode. I’m suuuuper curious about how the anime compares to the light novels in terms of pacing and what is or isn’t left out. I really, really like the vibe of this show! It’s just also very...confounding. Maybe that’s being too harsh. Idk. To clarify - it's not even that I don't think Amane should be acting this way, it's more about how long the author (or anime director, depending on differences between the two?) are letting him act this way without clueing us into why.

I think they give hints here and there, like how Mahiru said how nicely he cleaned up in middle school, and to top it off, they have the flashback overlapping with the Prince when he says Hi to Amane. You don't hear anything, but you have a feeling that something happened with that other person the way the background gets dark and you have the look on his face surrounded by the three other students.
