Hello there! For this week's bonus video, I wanted to give a little context for why, in this house, we adore Natasha Lyonne -- starting with her adorable early roles in commercials and Pee-Wee's Playhouse, and then of course with her teen appearance in But I'm a Cheerleader. Things took an unpleasant turn for a few years in her 20s: Some people in her life who did not have her best interests at heart; and a health crisis that nearly took her out. But fortunately for her -- and us! -- she's made of tough stuff, and not only survived but thrived.

Piece of info if you ever do a video on Orphan Black. The last scene of the last episode the camera shows she's reading something in Russian. My husband grew up in the USSR. The open caption says Orphan Black so you realize that's where the name of the series comes from. Except according to my husband the words are not Orphan Black, the Words are Orphan Gray.

Natasha Lyonne has always been a fascinating performer. There's a good-natured world weariness that she brings to every character that she does, whether it's as the lead of a series or the smallest movie cameo. I'm glad that she is finally getting the respect that she deserves, both as a producer and director, but also as a headliner in projects like Russian Doll and Poker face, both of which are smartly plotted stories that use her deeply idiosyncratic voice and mannerisms to maximum effect. Another recent project of hers that I don't think got the love it deserved was a movie released on Netflix last year called His Three Daughters. It's the story of 2 adult daughters converging back to their father’s cramped, rent-controlled New York apartment where he has lived with third daughter (played by Lyonne) so they can all pay witness to his final days before he succumbs to Cancer. All three women play interesting and complex roles, and the actresses who play them all get ample moments to shine, but Lyonne is the undisputed beating heart of the film. There’s a scene where the oldest daughter is berating her about not having had the DNR signed, and Lyonne performance just reveals so much simultaneously. There’s anger and frustration that she’s been the one caring for their father day after day whereas her older sister just got there, mixed with overarching sadness of why they are all there in the first place, with the added sympathy of the shared loss she knows they will soon all be grieving. It’s just an amazing performance, and one that will definitely connect with anyone whose been in a similar circumstance. It's not an easy movie to watch, but with Lyonne at the centre given the best performance of her career, I think it was easily one of the top movies of last year.

I missed this last week, seeing that i read alot of books and watch ⌚️ alot of movies, for the most part I always think the book is always better than the movie for the simple fact that most movies cut alot of the world building that makes the story that much better than a two hour movie could ever be. That's not saying the movie is bad , unless it a Stephen King movie, because the majority of those are just horrible but if I can think of any book that I've read that when I saw it as a movie and liked the movie better I'll make a list. Btw jurassic park the book is far better than the movie, making the girl older than the boy was kinda stupid, making the park owner a nice guy was also kinda stupid. And that's the major reason why books are almost always better than the movie because books don't have to be all action all the time. Looking forward to seeing your next video

Too bad she’s shilling for artificial imitation now, making it far harder for many other people to survive a future she has no credible reason to endorse

Ok I am certainly not thrilled about that development! She says their goal is to find a way to do it ethically, but ... that seems ... well, if there's a pathway I'm not seeing it.

SO EXCITED for the But I'm A Cheerleader video!!!!! And while, obviously, you are correct on the misogyny in Hollywood, I think perhaps Natasha's....cis+ swagger, shall we say, is why she's so adept at playing lesbians. The way she carries herself translates well into, I don't know if butchness is really the word I'm looking for, but she reads authentically as a queer woman when playing those characters. At least in a way that is relatable to me haha
