The Unlikely Master of Gay Sitcoms, James Burrows

James Burrows elevated sitcoms to an art from with Cheers, Frasier, Taxi, Will & Grace, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and many more. The son of legendary Broadway director Abe Burrows (Guys & Dolls, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying), James became a television legend in his own right, the self-described "800-pound gorilla" who helped shape NBC's Must-See-TV. He was also responsible for some of the most iconic gay episodes of TV, with queer comedies spanning the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. And he may have even paved the way for gay marriage in the United States. So who WAS this guy? And what makes his work so special? Matt, thanks for showing some love to my favorite TV innovator of all time. More people need to know about this man!

He did a fantastic job of making tv shows, but Mid Century modern was sadly a horrific show. Frasier was a better gay show if this was his last show i only wished that it had been better. Everyone deserves a great finial act

Who was Phyllis' gay ex? Your videos are always 💯, you've definitely found your groove. I hope it grows and you get a big audience you deserve. You need your W&G to tell mainstream 2026 that gay is ok, and queer is even better! (slight allusion to For The Boys joke, Is kissing wrong?) I like when you remind us of Showbiz people's connections to other queer projects, ie. Where do I know them from?

Ah! Blind John Quinn from Golden Girls
