Susan Sarandon was not supposed to play Janet in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, at least not if her agents had anything to say about it. Susan wanted the part, and the producers wanted her in the movie. But her agents insisted she was wrong for the part. How did she wind up in the movie anyway? That was the result of a very clever little trick during the audition process. That story and a bunch more about the making of RHPS in this week's bonus video!

Rocky Horror currently on Broadway shoots holes in your theory. The economics of Broadway for musicals necessitate that commercial success is realistic. In spite of the dismal performance of its first iteration on Broadway, this one is a success. (Also, new musical version of The Black Swan debuted this year in Boston at American Repertory Theatre to good reviews)

I remember many decades ago (late 1970s) passing a movie theater in Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans, and a friend told me what the midnight movie was. I was shocked and scared and never did go to see it. But I passed that theater regularly and saw the title up there week after week for many months. Years later, after I came out, a friend had a copy of the movie and we watched it together. It still had an impact on me, one of the pivotal films that helped shape my early gay conscious.

I remember when my mom first let me watch more than just the opening of Rocky Horror. My mouth dropped open and I fell in love with this world. I think I was a preteen at the time and this whole queer world just opened up to me. Culture shock, for sure, because Billings had NOTHING like this that I'd encountered, but also in a way it was like coming home. The Time Warp, Sweet Transvestite (Oh, how that number made my trans egg quiver despite being convinced I could never be the girl I knew I was inside, so it remained uncracked), To-to-to-Touch Me, I'm Going Home. I wanted to turn right around and watch it again.

I had no idea they tried to do that with Black Swan - that is so wild, haha

They hired me to photograph one of the screenings! It was so bizarre. The drag queens knew it wasn't going to work but a gig's a gig. Everyone left halfway through.

That's a good point... though I think at this point Rocky Horror has looped around through its weirdness and become mainstream. I guess my theory really only holds for NEW projects!
