I've been chugging away on some fun research for upcoming videos, which includes (for the first time!) the acquisition of PHYSICAL MEDIA. Come with me now on a journey through TV Radio Mirror magazine, a celebrity gossip mag of the 1970s featuring an in-depth look at television's sexiest drag performer ... an attempt to dispel gay rumors that may have backfired ... and some truly scandalous back-page ads for naughty books and vibrating devices.

The embed worked! Maybe Patreon and Vimeo have finally gotten their act together on this thing. There's something very wrong with the way you described the Owen Mills photo. I can't tell what's on the facing printed page but that photo is of Jim Nabors and Roy Roger's with his wife Dale Rogers. I'm positive about this. My mom was a huge Roy Roger's fan and we went to a couple of museums where they were featured - Western Heritage Museum, (called the Cowboy Hall of Fame at the time), and the Roy Roger's museum in Apple Valley, California (sadly, now closed). I live in Oklahoma City, (home of the Cowboy Hall of Fame). Roy and Dale had a "mentally handicapped" child, so they built the Dale Roger's Institute here in OKC, which is a place where mentally challenged adults could learn life skills. Sorry this post is so long. I was just trying to show that I really do know Roy and Dale when I see them.

+1 to that! 👍😎🤘 I was going to say the same thing! 🤪 Everything seems to work flawlessly! I'm on an Android phone, btw. Just for reference since it helps to get feedback from users on different platforms/devices. 😉 Rock on! 😻🥳☮💯

Oh gosh that's a relief that the video's working. Whew. Thank you for testing!!! Also YES you're absolutely right, half the photos are of Olan Mills and his wife and the other half are ... for some unexplained reason ... the Rogerses. There is no context for why!

Anneli

Okay, stop the presses, are those the Moomin books behind you!? Have you done a video about Tove Jansson and I missed it, or could we get one of those at some point in the future? Talk about an intersection of pop culture and LGBT history.

Anneli

Also, so glad to see the links finally worked. It's an early Christmas miracle. Or something. 😊

Tomas Mundo

This was great. I'm going to get a sun tan, smoke a cigarette and buy foot pain reliever now. Why can't we get great mags like this anymore? Amor siempre!

Ten Thousand Worlds

Guess what? The embedded video worked this time but the text link didn’t. So long as one of them works, it’s all good. I’d completely forgotten about Flip’s dragy character.

Steve McLean

Yes, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans

Leotha Boyd

It's not working. Even the link isn't working. Sorry

mattbaume

Oh noooo, I really thought we had it this time! What error message are you getting?

Laura Mallory

Definitely want more gossip from this magazine! What a great find :)

mattbaume

Oh good eye! I don't do a lot of collecting but I HAD to get all of the lovely Moomin hardcovers that D&Q released a few years ago. A video about Tove is such a great idea.

Laura Estrada

That was great Matt!! I wish my mom would have saved some of my grandmas gossip magazines she had around just too look at the ads. I think you got Olin Mills and his wife mixed up with Roy Rogers Dale Evans. I think Olin Mills was the actual photographer. I think he later opened up his chain of goofy as you can get studios.

Jerry Wesner

Olan (sp?) Mills was a photo studio my family sent film to for developing about 50 years back.

Douglas Lee Hall

Ah yes, Geraldine. The photo of the guy in the cowboy hat is Roy Rogers and his wife Dale Evans. Horizontal photos to make it easier for people to pull them out and hang them on their wall.

Haan

Great video! but please don't call them "feminine" hygiene products as it's kinda trans-exclusionary, menstruation products are a more modern term

mattbaume

Oh that's a good point, I was reading off of the ad but not many people were thinking about inclusive language back then!
