Well hello there!

In this week's bonus video, I've got a very fun (dirty) joke courtesy of Rue McClanahan, and a real ~ mystery ~ about what she was doing standing next to hunky Dustin Hoffman at a party (???) sometime in the 1970s. Also! Check out this clip of Betty White spitballing about Cary Grant's sex life with Joy Behar. Was Cary Grant, you know? It's complicated, but let's enjoy some very gay photos of him with his, uh, housemate.

(Oops sorry I forgot the backup link! Here it is: https://youtu.be/RzmCb_z88eA)

Um, while the Dustin Hoffman photo is brightening my morning, 😍 the video link is alas not working on the Patreon app, and the links in the related email notification seem to point back to the app. ☹️ Would you happen to have a direct text link for the Vimeo video? 🙏

Yeah, was about to mention she'd made her Broadway debut, at 34, as Sally Weber starring opposite Hoffman in the play Jimmy Shine in Dec 1968. The photo in the video might be from an afterparty possibly. You can read Dustin's small statement on Rue's passing here: https://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/rue-mcclanahan-remembered-15878/ as well as the NYT's review of his performance (albeit with no mention of Rue): https://clickamericana.com/media/newspapers/dustin-hoffman-plays-himself-in-jimmy-shine-on-broadway-1968

Sorry about that! Should be there now!

"There's this really affectionate gaze behind the camera"... There are some pretty affectionate gays in front of the camera, too! 😉

I remember reading about the Bea/poop story years and years ago on some message board or maybe a comment section. For years I honestly thought I dreamed it up so I’m happy to know someone else heard it too.

As a teen, I was REALLY into learning about the Hollywood Golden Age. I bought old gossip mags and read ever book I could find on the subject. I remember reading somewhere in a pulp-rag gossip mag a bit of gossip that indicated Cary Grant was as likely to be romantically associated with men as with women. In her autobiography, his last wife Dyan Cannon made it very clear that he was definitely attracted to women, though. There were also rumors of him being into BDSM, but I couldn't find any current sources to corroborate this. This would have been much more controversial even than him being gay at the time. Anyway, it is clear, if nothing more than from the wild rumors, that Cary Grant lead a very interesting life.

I was a little boy when Soap came out and got to watch it during it’s first run and if was a highlight of my week. I look forward to next week. Thanks as always.

Super looking forward to your Soap episode, the scene where Jodi comes out to his brother and they hug - really helped me to know how to respond when my little brother came out.

It's such a sweet scene, and a great model for a coming-out. How awesome that it was helpful way back then!

Soap was the best. I'm kind of late to all of your content, Matt, so I wonder if you've ever done anything with the gay couple in Northern Exposure? That's one of the first gay relationships I remember seeing on screen, though it was well after most of what you've covered from Barney Miller, etc.

As much as it is awful to be in the closet, I also think it must have been sheer hell to be the woman marrying a gay man to keep his gayness a secret from fans. I feel so much sadness from these women going into a relationship that they knew was empty, or worse if they didn't know that it was a "prop". Ugh, the past was awful.
