Hello there! In this week's bonus video we're diving even deeper into the amazing life of Angela Lansbury, including the incredible lengths she went to in order to beat out Bea Arthur for the lead role in Mame. Plus! A collection of beauty and party tips from Joan Crawford -- believe me when I say NOTHING can prepare you for her hair styling technique or her little secret trick for making sure every party is a success (or fiasco, depending on how you look at it).

That hair mask treatment was pretty popular in the '60s.

Would love to see a video of you covering your favorite treasures in your library. I'm always peaking those shelves 8-)

My friend’s mom called me specifically to tell me about the time she saw Angela in Gypsy. She had no idea she was in it (it was a class trip) and she said it threw her over the moon. It’s such a shame these classic stars never got the Into the Woods treatment and had their productions professionally filmed

The particular passage Matthew read from Joan Crawford starts at 1:33:09. I have to admit that Feud brought me to this -- my interest in old Hollywood and old movies is not especially deep. But having learned much of her backstory and where she was at this point in her life made this audiobook hard to step away from. Highly practical yet with glimpses of the fanciful and glamorous, a strong voice yet one incredibly hemmed in by the conventions of her mindset and of her time. It feels both an instructive pronouncement from on high and and the relatable advice given across a patio table from someone just a bit older. https://youtu.be/RXDPQmLit8w?t=5589

Someone needs to do a B Dylan Hollis style video series, except experimenting with bonkers mid century beauty treatments instead of food recipes (I’m sure a billion people on YT and Tiktok already do this)

@Matt Baume I hope you'll be doing something on Leslie Jordan

You've probably seen this, but in case you haven't this is worth a watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKJdPqOMGkA Angela, Joan Collins, Dana Wynter at the 31st Oscars (1959). Hard to believe it was written by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen. If there is such a thing as a straight male sensibility, this song has it.

Hi Matt, are you able to share the links to previous livestreams? I usually never miss one but didn't get the youtube notification for todays and would love to watch even if it's not live!

mattbaume

Ahahaha this is so great -- a reference to the previous year's ceremony when Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster sang "It's Great not to be Nominated"

Gillian

Hm, strangely nothing loads when I use that link (had the same problem with it from your twitter). Thanks anyway though, will have to stay on top of my youtube notifications from now on!

I loooved Nick and Nite. We didn't get cable until I was 10, but then I became one of the few kids my age (in 1990-1991) absolutely obsessed with the Patty Duke Show. It also introduced me and my sister to Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore's shows, which we remain huge fans of to this day.

Hey Matt! So I checked my schools Database to see if they have Mame, I go to UCB and we have a film archive, and we don't appear to have it but I will check in person next time I'm there. They have the 1969 version with Lucille Ball in UCLA but I'll keep looking to see if they have the 1966 Angela Lansbury version. Thank you for your videos :D

Bea Arthur was a true support of the gay community and those close to her. Unlike many D-Listers today her actions backed up her words. The link is her appearance at Sidetrack Bar in Chicago. https://youtu.be/IqvEa6Qs-LQ
